ARCHIVED Corn And Rice Allergy With Celiacs?
jststric replied to Tara Marie's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I also found I couldn't have rice, but have had it a few times lately with not alot of trouble. But my rice issues also includes rice flour that is in MANY, MANY gluten-free items and those things still seem to bother me. Go figure. So much of this makes no sense. But give your gut plenty of time to heal to begin with. -

ARCHIVED Gluten Digest Pills? A Cure Or Not Even Close?
jststric replied to Harley0000's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sorry, but until something like Celiac, or gluten-intolerance is better understood----if not at least by the medical community (!) there will be no magical pill. What your brother offers is like the old-fashioned elixer that many took town-to-town that existed of nothing more than nice percentage of alcohol content. If it were that easy, don't you think... -
ARCHIVED Bourbon / Whiskey
jststric replied to Lisa79's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have read that the distillation process makes liquor safe, but that some companies throw in more grains during that process in some of the U.S. bourbons. Or that's been my understanding of what's been said. I have gone to drinking Scotch Whisky instead....again, my understanding that the process is better, and I haven't had any problems with it. Hopefully... -
I have yet to find a dairy-free cheese I care for. But with a little planning ahead you can have a decent homemade sour cream by using soft or silken tofu, processed with minced garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Or you can find Tofutti brand sour cream as well as cream cheese at stores like Whole Foods or Better Health. I use this alot to get that creamy...

ARCHIVED Cooking Oil Spray!
jststric replied to jststric's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
granted, the "may contain" is as you say. But I have found FOR ME that anything that says that, IS. OFTEN in the past I haven't seen this before eating from it and then get to looking for a reason why I'm having trouble. And everytime I find that disclaimer, is a problem for me. I guess I'm VERY cross-contamination sensitive. -
ARCHIVED Costco Kirkland Products
jststric replied to Mama Ruthies's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
not sure what products specifically you are talking about. We shop Costco ALL the time---they get WAY too much of our money. But I've never had problems with stuff being "hidden" or undeclared. I have been disappointed to find milk products in some things, since I'm also very dairy-intolerant also, but they've always said it on the labels. Now, I have... -

ARCHIVED Ashoka - Indian In Rochester Hills And Canton Michigan
jststric replied to Eric-C's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I appreciate the time you took in telling us about a place you enjoy. It all sounds WONDERFUL. I live in your general area, but I have so many other food-intolerances that just being gluten-free doesn't help a whole lot. I am also bean-intolerant and rice intolerant (among other things) so that makes your wonderful Indian cuisine fairly off-limits for... -

ARCHIVED Glutened By Meds...upsetting..:(
jststric replied to Diva1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
yeah, I was taking all kinds of supplements and finally realized they could be part of my problem so I called all the manufacturers. Some TRIED to give good info and other's didn't. I came away just scared of all them. None of them were prescriptions, just supplements. But I finally happened on Kirkman Labs and they have alot of products that are allergen... -
ARCHIVED Cooking Oil Spray!
jststric posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was at the store yesterday picking up a few things and I don't know what possessed me to suddenly look at the label of my brand of cooking spray but I did. And guess what??? "May have trace amts of wheat and milk"!!!!! Again---who woulda' thunk??? THe name-brand, original Pam does not have that disclaimer. I guess I was under a rock on that one and... -
ARCHIVED Why Is This Such A Popular Condition For People To Self Diagnose With?
jststric replied to silvertail's topic in Publications & Publicity
I can understand your questioning all this. First, you say "ONLY" 1 in 150.....do you stop to think how many people that is?? It's HUGE. As for the "self-diagnosing" its mostly because we start having issues and problems and the doctors in the US don't seem to be very knowledgable about it. ONly a few here/there are experts in the Celiac condition. From... -
ARCHIVED Silk Milk Products No Longer Labelled Gluten Free !
jststric replied to songstressc's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I suspect this could also be another case like the Walmart question the other day. Their new labeling no longer says gluten-free on many of their products that previously did. We were discussing this and someone mentioned that the US does not have clear guidelines and for legal purposes they have probably taken it off of their products due to possible zealous... -
ARCHIVED Allergies, Intollerances, And Celiac
jststric replied to Googles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
boy, good luck with coming up with a reasonable explanation on that!!! When I started having problems, I went through a battery of allergy tests and NOTHING that bothers me showed up positive. But I did get a few positives on a few items that don't seem to bother me at all!! Go figure! I have not been officially diagnosed at all, but have serious intolerances... -
We have alot in common! When things started flaring up on me, I was already dairy-intolerant. Doctors could not find a problem, but my doc did suggest I start eating yogurt with the good bacteria in it to replenish what my digestion was probably missing. But being dairy-intolerant, yogurt was not possible. I ended up having to quit taking all my vitamins...

I think it totally depends on the individuals. I, personally, can still touch the foods I cannot eat. I don't think it's fair to expect my husband and son (grown) to be limited by my needs. I take the responsibility of cleaning counters, pans, etc that I need to use and SO FAR it works for me. I had lived so long without the need of a toaster and when...

ARCHIVED My Family Is So Great!
jststric replied to chilligirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are very blessed! Some soy sauces are gluten-free but many aren't. I had to snicker at your use of 'dh' meaning your husband. I'm in another online community, Cafemom, and that's normal there. But in here it refers to a skin condition, dermatitis her---- something. Hoe you get over the ribs soon! -
ARCHIVED This Might Be A Stupid Question....
jststric replied to Shess0816's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I was asking the same thing not long ago and then when I read the answer, it was a real V-8 moment, lol. Nightshades......peppers! I have no idea why but it seems that alot of us have issues with them....and things that are strongly spiced. Maybe it's our "compromised" digestion??? Perhaps someone else will be able to answer that one. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free For A Couple Months - Still Diarrhea!
jststric replied to L13's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can only speak of my experience with this. When all my problems started I had diarrhrea all the time. I was altready dairy-intolerant but it got alot worse. I couldn't get doctors to find a reason for anything so I did my own research and decided Iust have a 'leaky gut' which needed to be healed before I would see results from any elimination diet I was... -
ARCHIVED Food Intolerance Testing
jststric replied to Bigpete757's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
truly, unless you are officially "allergic" the only way to know is to eliminate one food at a time from your diet for a period of time and see if you feel/see a difference. If you take away everything you think may be bothering you all at once, you will never know for sure which item could be a DEFINITE culprit. It takes time and its frustrating but it... -
ARCHIVED How To Calm Down The Immune System
jststric replied to Bigpete757's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Tumeric is simply a spice! It would be easily obtained and I've read its good for the system. After alot of self-researching, I felt like I had what is called a "leaky gut" and that needed healing as I was finding out what foods were my intolerances. My doc didn't know much about what I was going thru but she encouraged me to eat yogurts that were high... -
ARCHIVED Hickory Baked Ham
jststric replied to blessedmomto3a's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My husband LOVES to smoke meats and I've read alot about smoked meats being questionable. Since I understand the smoking thing, I believe that you need to know what was used to do the smoking. We use actual large wood chunks. But many people use a processed briquet and I think it's questionable what all they use to make those briquets. I think many are... -
ARCHIVED Walmart Products Remove The Gluten Free Label
jststric replied to Manboy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have also noticed that the "Gluten-Free" was removed from their brand of Vienna sausages. I'm wondering the same thing. -
ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Screw Up
jststric replied to summerteeth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
awww, so sorry you got so sick! I never had migraines, and only once in a blue moon when they started about 10 yrs ago. I don't think they were gluten-related at that time. I think I've had some migraines due to hormones. And a few of those certainly were bad enough to make me want to vomit or actually vomit if I had anything in my stomach. It's been...
