ARCHIVED Not Doing Well Emotionally
Wolicki replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Heather, You need to give yourself a break. Let the house get dirty and let the kids eat PB&J if that's what it takes for you to get some rest and recover. I finally feel like myself again, but it's been 8 months. When your body says rest, just rest. You'll get your old self back, I promise But don't put too much pressure on yourself right now... -
ARCHIVED Kids' Treat Equivalents?
Wolicki replied to boysmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Whole Foods has a store brand rice krispie treat, but IMHO, it tastes like Cardboard:( There is no goldfish type cracker on the market that is gluten free. My son really likes Glutino cheese flavored crackers. Some other ideas would be fruit roll ups, the gluten free cookie bags they have at Starbucks (they come in 3 different flavors I think), freeze... -
Hi, My 9 year old son was diagnosed ADHD at age 5. It has gotten progressively worse and the dosage of the meds has gotten higher. Without his meds, he can't even stay focused long enough to tie his shoes He was diagnosed last fall with Celiac. He has been on a very strict diet since October, with only 3 "slip ups" during that time, when he couldn...

ARCHIVED Which Doctor Next? Allergist? Neurologist? Gastro?
Wolicki replied to newgfcali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Let me preface this by saying that not all doctors are bad. And some people here may have had intolerance testing that was legitimate. These are my opinions, based on personal experience, not facts and quotations. Most doctors don't understand anything that is not black and white. For instance, you do not have a food allergy. An allergy test will be... -
ARCHIVED Weaker Gluten Reaction?
Wolicki replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am thinking maybe, but I am not sure. My gluten reactions, even from tiny tiny amounts were horrible just a few months ago. I am fairly certain that I got some gluten in a seasoning on Thursday. I asked the server to check, because it sure did taste like it was marinated in soy sauce. He assured me that it was only garlic and pepper. I ate it anyway... -
Many, many here have dealt with iron defiency. I think in most cases, it resolves itself after being gluten free, and supplementing iron. I ended up having IV iron infusions because I couldn't tolerate the oral prescription strength. Lots of people here just took OTC iron, maintained the gluten free diet and got their levels back up. It's very common...

ARCHIVED Constant Hunger Pains?
Wolicki replied to momof4inla's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When I first went gluten free, for about 2 months, there was not enough food in California to satisfy me. I was hungry as soon as I put my fork down. After two months, appetite became normal. My son who is 9 has been gluten free since October, and his seems to be getting worse. He is always, always hungry. I need another job to pay for groceries! LOL -

Someone just kill me now if mushrooms have gluten, LOL. -
ARCHIVED Have A Great Pediatrician In Los Alamitos, Ca
Wolicki replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Doctors
very cool:) -
Two things; You're probably suffering from gluten withdrawal. It will pass. Second, some people say that giving up gluten is almost as traumatic as losing a family member, and you go through the stages of grief. I think that you're probably under a lot of stress because you've changed a major part of your life, and that kind of stress tends to end up...

I tend to look at it his way. Gluten intolerance is just a baby case of Celiac. either way, the effects are very damaging to the body, including the teeth. My teeth were a mess because of Celiac. I just had two crowns and a filling today, left over from pre gluten free days. Hoping that I won't need anything but cleanings for a while!

ARCHIVED Need Help Prepping For Celiac Test
Wolicki replied to KatyE's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't think anyone can say with certainty if your tests will be accurate or not. The "rule of thumb" is that you should be eating at least 3 slices of bread per day for 3 months for an accurate test. For sure, try to get gluten every day until your test. But be ready, because you have been gluten light, it could affect the tests. -
ARCHIVED Really Tired At School
Wolicki replied to chasing4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Have you had her iron and ferritin checked? I second giving her some great tasting safe snacks in her lunch. -
ARCHIVED My Blood Test Results, Could This Be Caused By Any Other Condition?
Wolicki replied to Jeffiner's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Here's the thing: a weak positive is like being a little bit pregnant. You either are, are you aren't. Yours was positive. With endoscopies, they take 6 samples from about 35 feet of intestines. It's completely possible to have a negative scope and still have Celiac or gluten intolerance. -
Thanks, TH. He seems great. And he's not really worried about his thyroid at this point. But, he ordered the antibodies, just to be on the safe side. <breathing a sigh of relief>

I took my 9 yr old son to a Pediatric Endocrinologist today. He's also a Primary Care Ped. My son was dx'd Celiac last fall, but now has hypothyroid. So, we went to see him today, and I told him he is Celiac for the history. He looked at his labs and indicated that he needs to have his antibodies tested for Hashimotos. Hallelujah- a doctor who understands...

Taking a stab at this: sounds like a candida or fungal overgrowth issue. I had those symptoms. I took one round of antibiotics for strep throat and then went down hill. Nausea, weight loss, fatigue, it was terrible. My GI did an upper endoscopy to diagnose it. Then I went on Diflucam for 2 months. There are several drugs to treat it, and I would recommend...

ARCHIVED Should We Change My Childs Diet?
Wolicki replied to boubfam4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
there would be absolutely nothing to lose in trying the diet. Give it a strict 3 month trial and see how it goes. Be careful of cross contamination if you have a gluten household. Good luck. I hope it helps your little girl. -
ARCHIVED My Son Just Got Diagnosed And Have Couple Questions
Wolicki replied to macocha's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There are lots of good snacks: Lay's Staxx, Crunchmaster crackers, Glutino crackers Then all the naturally gluten-free snacks: apples, bananas, string cheese, rice cakes with nut butters. My boys do really well with it (9 and 13). They say that the glue issue is a myth- although I don't chance it. I use glueticks for envelopes. Playdough, but that... -
ARCHIVED Hearing Voices?
Wolicki replied to katco's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oh my. I don't think I have anything to add, only that my thoughts and prayers are with you. That must be horrible. It's always worse when it is your baby. I would educate, educate, educate, to make sure he doesn't get accidental gluten. Poor guy. Maybe a visit to the Ped is in order, too. I am praying it gets better soon! -
Alright Jason, you're not gonna like this, but I am going to say it anyway. You have to get some help from a professional. Anytime someone makes a suggestion that would do you a lot of good, you blow it off as if you know all the answers. You obviously don't know all the answers. And if you stopped for a minute and listened to all the wonderful people...

Ballpark, ideal TSH is between 1 and 3, depending on the lab. So, your TSH is probably normal. Did they check your Free T3 and Free T4? Those two can be way off and still have a normal TSH.

ARCHIVED Can Hypothyroid Make You Starving?
Wolicki replied to Wolicki's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Both of my boys have always eaten like horses. This is like way crazy eating. He takes a multi gummi vitamin each day, 40 mg Ritalin SR (for ADHD) and an iron supplement. He is a super healthy eater most of the time. Eats lots of fruits and veg, lean proteins, but he's not much of a grain eater. Occassional rice cakes and tortillas, but no rice, rarely...
