ARCHIVED Reaction To A Food Containing Barley Malt
Wolicki replied to beksmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
sorry, cross contamination. It means that gluten somehow just came into contact with something I ate. Yes, a tender abdomen is a common reaction. The longer I go without gluten in my system, the worse the reaction is. Last time, I had major D, pain, heartburn, extreme fatigue, joint pain and some brain fog. Most of the major pain went away by day 3.... -
ARCHIVED Reaction To A Food Containing Barley Malt
Wolicki replied to beksmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It's different for everyone. I haven't had actual gluten, but have gotten cc. My cc gastro issues usually clear up in about 3 days, and the fatigue and fog linger for weeks. Eat simply, drink lots of water and don't forget your probiotics. I hope it passes quickly. -
ARCHIVED I Am Thinking This Is Hogwash- Super Gluten
Wolicki posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Guys I got this email from a concerned family member today. I am thinking it's a bunch of phooey hogwash, but thought I would check in with my "experts." "I meant to tell you this, and you might want to pass it on to Janie. When Eve was in Europe she discovered that baked goods made with wheat did not make her sick. As soon as she had a bite... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me Decipher These Results
Wolicki replied to happymom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From everything I have read, a low positive ttg is like being "a little bit pregnant." False postives are very uncommon. What you will find is most docs will not recommend a gluten free diet based on the one positive test. He will probably suggest the biopsy, which is the "gold standard" for celiac diagnosis. I got pneumonia 7 years in a row, 3 times... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Know Anything About Avocado Allergies?
Wolicki replied to Black Sheep's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
so plain Tuna and fruit? That is all? And how about before that? The reason I am asking is because I can almost guarantee you've got some secondary intolerances going on. Sometimes symptoms don't show up for a day or two after you eat. Common culprits for Celiacs: dairy, soy, nightshade veggies, nuts, eggs, corn, and grains of all kinds. I think my... -

Neroli, I am with you. No matter which brand (I think Ive tried them all) they're all like styrofoam. My family and I eat them every day, but we put stuff on them. It fills the need for crunchy that you miss gluten free. We spread them with peanut butter and jelly/banana/honey, cream cheese/honey/coconut. I have actually enjoyed the caramel flavor with... -
ARCHIVED Would You Scope?
Wolicki replied to renee28's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I declined a scope for my son. Here's a question to ask yourself: If the scope is negative, will he be gluten free anyway? Tests look positive. For me, that would be enough. I was sick for 10 yrs before I was diagnosed. My son had frequent vomiting/constipation/diarrhea/headaches. His blood tests were positive, so we went gluten free. I wanted to... -
ARCHIVED Advice!
Wolicki replied to The Glutenator's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
False positive blood tests just don't happen. RE: biopsy- yes he should have taken at least 6 samples. And there are over 35 ft of intestine. Very possible to miss damaged areas. -
ARCHIVED Salad Bar In Grocery Store?
Wolicki replied to GarAndTeed's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got good and sick (gluten reaction) from the salad bar at Whole Foods. No obvious gluten, so it had to be cc. -
ARCHIVED Can You Help Me Translate?
Wolicki replied to proud-armywife's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In Layman's terms, you have been diagnosed with Celiac with the infamous "gold standard." Your test shows all the abnormalities associated with Celiac. HTH -
Today, I went to a luncheon at the Disneyland Hotel. With 983 other people. I had heard that Disney was great with food issues, but had not tried yet. I called one week in advance and asked if they could accomodate me. Absolutely they said! I started to give her the details and she very nicely said "No Maam, all you need to do is to notify your server...

ARCHIVED Please Help! Huge Weight Gain, Exhaustion... Endless Ailments
Wolicki replied to AshleyRay's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I totally get it. I was a skeleton with severe malabsorption last June. I was very, very ill. I started to feel better right away, then had new problems come up like: secondary intolerances (like 20 of them), neuropathy, water weight gain (massive), bloating and gas. All of it has resolved, except for the weight. I gained 100 pounds in 6 months. I eat... -

I would also suggest having your blood sugar and thyroid checked while doing the blood work. -
I developed pretty bad neuropathy AFTER going gluten free. Started in the sides of my feet and eventually moved all the way up to my face. Thankfully, it all went away within about 7 months. I still get an occassional tinge of tinglies, but nothing like before.

ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge Pre-Biopsy
Wolicki replied to bittykitty's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
With all due respect, your doctor is an idiot. I was undiagnosed for 10 years, and then once I was diagnosed tried desperately to find answers through medical professionals, Western MD's. What I learned through the process is I don't give a darn what a doctor would say. YOU know your body better than anyone. I will not put my body through the additional... -
I use sorghum in place of brown rice flour all the time. Go for it.

ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge Pre-Biopsy
Wolicki replied to bittykitty's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would say it's definitely possible. I would call your doc right now and let him know your symptoms. Gluten challenges are barbaric. Maybe he will accept diagnosis based on your reactions? -

ARCHIVED I Am Feeling Frustrated
Wolicki replied to proud-armywife's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
OK, first thing is stop and take a deep breath. It's going to be ok. Just take one day at a time. First rule- don't expect a doctor or nutritionist to help you figure out this life, otherwise you're gonna give yourself an ulcer. They just don't know. It is too complicated, and the only "experts" are those who deal with it daily. That's us! So the... -

Those are just a few of the things I was intolerant to. After 8 months gluten free. most have resolved. -
LOts of people have trouble with Cheetos. I avoid them because they make my 9 yr old celiac sick. I think it's from cc though, not from the ingredients.
