I like Frito Lay Corn Rounds. I have them all the time. -
ARCHIVED Kamchatka Vodka
StacyA posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got glutened, and the timing is related to Kamchatka vodka. Unflavored. I'm not sure what grain it is made from, but it's distilled, so that's typically okay. I had it with Diet Dr. Pepper - poured a little vodka into the can - and I drink Diet DP all the time. Has anyone reacted to this vodka? Or are there very sensitive people here who drink... -
Going gluten-free for the whole house is a good idea. An adult can handle a shared kitchen fairly well with diligence and frequent hand-washing. But it's way too tricky for a kid to be that careful and aware. It may not be fair for the non-celiac child, but it's certainly easier than it used to be to find mainstream choices, and it's only going to get...

ARCHIVED Toothpaste For Sensitive Teeth
StacyA posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've read through old posts about Sensodyne. Both Peter and Richard say it's okay, so that's usually enough for me, but I also saw a few posts from people who swear they've reacted to it. So I'm hoping to hear from people who recently (in 2010) have used particular brands of toothpaste for sensitive teeth with no reaction. I usually use regular Crest or... -
ARCHIVED How To Convince The Boyfriend To Make Our Kitchen Gluten-Free?
StacyA replied to dreacakes's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I suggest sitting down and talking to him, and explaining how stressful it is to cook in such a minefield (funny, I was thinking the word 'minefield' this weekend when I tried to cook in someone else's kitchen). My husband is ready for us to go gluten-free whenever I say the word - but I haven't made the change because of my two young sons. Instead we're... -
I wonder if my carpal-tunnel-like symptoms are also related to my crappy memory - since they're both seemingly neurological: my hands go numb every night, sometimes 10 times, no matter what position they are in. I think my B levels were tested when I asked my doctor to check a bunch of things including my vitamin D level (partly because of the hand numbness...

I understand that undiagnosed celiac's can contribute to neurological problems, 'brain fog', and that undiagnosed celiac disease can be, for some people, mistaken for ADHD. However my celiac's was triggered just a year ago by an intestinal parasite, and I only had about 5 months of illness before I was diagnosed (I'm fortunate it was so quickly uncovered...

How very sweet of your friends, but I would be leery of something cooked in their kitchens. I have a shared kitchen, but I also have separate margarine tubs, separate spoon rests, separate colanders, and I watch very carefully for bread crumbs that somehow manage to get EVERYWHERE now that I'm more aware. I threw out my sugar and got a new bag because there...

ARCHIVED First Gluten-Free Road Trip - Any Advice?
StacyA replied to notme's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think there's rules against bringing in your own alcoholic beverage - although you could ask (ahead of time). Every restaurant is different regarding food. You could call ahead and say: 'My friends/husband want to spend a lot of money in your establishment on drinks/bbq but I'm on a severe diet restriction and would need to bring my own food/beer. I... -
ARCHIVED M & M's
StacyA replied to bluebonnet's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just got a different answer today, Aug 4. I sent an email asking about cc and got a direct phone call back, so the person apparently had time to research the question before she called me (at least I hope so). She told me the new pretzel ones are made on separate, 'overflow' lines. They're still made in the same building, but not on the same equipment... -
ARCHIVED M&m Cc Risk From New Pretzel Ones Appears Low...
StacyA posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I sent an email to Mars asking if there is now CC risk due to the new pretzel M&Ms (why, why d/c the crispy ones only to add pretzel ones...?). A representative actually called me at home rather than reply to my email. She said the pretzel M&M's are made on separate lines, so any cc would only result because the pretzel ones are made in the same... -
Don't rely just on a doctor for information. Read the books. See a dietician. Buy some cookbooks. Cruise the internet (reputable sites.) Even someone with diabetes would seek information from sources beyond a physician - and a good physician would encourage it. See if there's a dietician in your area with knowledge of celiac's.

ARCHIVED Struggling After Surprise Diagnosis
StacyA replied to MNAnne's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow, what a most excellent doctor! That's great to get diagnosed now, rather than 10 years from now with a whole host of the problems you'll read about in peoples' signatures on this forum. If it's true celiac disease - and blood and biopsy are the true tests - then a gluten-free diet can prevent a TON of life-threatening problems. Some people do over... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free And Sugar Addiction
StacyA replied to revenant's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also had A LOT of sugar cravings the first 4 months after going gluten-free - and I indulged my cravings just so I wouldn't feel deprived because of not eating gluten. My indulging probably kept my cravings going longer than they should have - like most addictions. Around 4 months ago I decided I needed to cut back on the sweets, and the cravings went... -
I won't buy graham crackers anymore because of the crumbs - there are sooo many crumbs and they are so light and airy that I would be so paranoid. 'Introducing' gluten for medical reasons is different than having a ton of gluten around the house. So picking your gluten areas or days or options may be a good idea - have Daddy give the gluten or choose teddy...

ARCHIVED David Sunflower Kernals Vs. gluten-free Honey Nut Chex
StacyA posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I made the mistake of trying two new things within 30 minutes of each other. I should have known better: Honey Nut Chex with 'Gluten Free' on the label; and David Sunflower Kernals (already shelled)- a ConAgra product with only oil and salt. Two hours later I'm feeling glutened, which is the typical pattern, but I'm not sure which product to be leery... -
ARCHIVED Nature Valley Roasted Nut Crunch

All I know is that it was the same price as the other flavors until just recently. -
ARCHIVED Nature Valley Roasted Nut Crunch
StacyA replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Last month, May 2010, I found a box of Almond Nut Crunch that said 'Gluten Free' right on the box - I was suprised. I ate them in the past because none of the ingredients contained gluten, but I think I had a cc reaction so I stopped buying them. I wonder if they are now on dedicated lines - because just adding the words 'Gluten Free' shouldn't account... -
I want to make the Whole Foods 'Morning Glory' Muffins: Open Original Shared Link I'm considering adding things like flaxseed, canned yams/frozen summer squash/canned pumpkin, crushed pineapple, or other stuff I find laying around. The problem is I'm not good at substitutions. If I add fruit or yams, I assume I should decrease the sugar a little...

I thought I'd share an email I sent out to a bunch of mental health colleagues last week: counselors, social workers, psychiatrists. It's my hope they forward it to others: Mental Health Colleagues: To best serve our clients, we should always be increasing our knowledge. I hope this email contributes in some way. Is celiac disease on your short...

ARCHIVED Alternative To Pumpkin In Pumpkin Cake/rolls?
StacyA replied to StacyA's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks everyone for the squash tips, I don't know why I didn't think of that! I also plan to make some muffins. I absolutely need to get back in the habit of eating breakfast. -
ARCHIVED Alternative To Pumpkin In Pumpkin Cake/rolls?
StacyA replied to StacyA's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks so much!!! Akron is only 20 minutes from me, so I will definately look into it!! (And I've heard of Tommy's pizza. I need to check it out sometime.) -
There is a warning issued in the U.S. against Kava Kava because of liver damage - so it should be avoided altogether. I haven't seen the same warnings about Valerian, unless there's been new data.
-
Look into magnesium supplements - 'nature's tranquilizer' - it's a smooth muscle relaxer - not that you get an immediate effect like with a benzo. It can be added to your daily routine. You can also try Valerian Root as needed - I have Spring Valley brand that states it is gluten free - but the first few times you try it be at home for the evening just...

ARCHIVED Should I Cook Pasta For My Family?
StacyA replied to KeriB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I cook two pastas all the time. I make sure I have two different spoon rests on different sides of the stove so I don't accidentally get my spoons confused (I did that once, too). And we have two different colanders. My nutritionist - who has celiac's - said she uses the same strainer - but I would not be comfortable with that. We have designated...
