    ARCHIVED Weight Gain

I didn't think I'd have to point out that a quick google search would lead to more info since that is pretty much standard these days. Never the less check out 'The Hidden Dangers of Soy'. There's a website and a book, both of which I have read, both of which have tons of info on how soy affects the thyroid and can cause weight gain. The author provides her...

    ARCHIVED Weight Gain

I just posted this in another thread but will copy it here: Soy is linked to inexplicable weight gain. It's used in place of gluten in a lot of gluten-free free foods and it's in a lot of manufactured food in general. It's actually quite difficult to avoid, even more so than gluten. I believe soy is the culprit for my weight gain. I've been soy free for...
  3. Soy is linked to inexplicable weight gain. It's used in place of gluten in a lot of gluten-free free foods and it's in a lot of manufactured food in general. It's actually quite difficult to avoid, even more so than gluten. I believe soy is the culprit for my weight gain. I've been soy free for 4-ish months and just beginning to slim a bit but haven't lost...
  4. My doc just tested me for lupus but haven't gotten the results yet. I have RA and Sjogren's (ie, dry eyes) and show some Raynaud's symptoms (ie, extremely cold hands). He said I have some lupus like symptoms that were evident in my hands (puffy, swollen) and face (red butterfly rash). I don't know much about lupus or how it differs from RA.
  5. I hope the results come soon. I'm at work today and I can't focus, can't stick to any one task and I realized I had a project that I was supposed to be working on that I completely forgot about. I didn't even recognize the name of the project or that it had any connection to me. I'm behind on my to do list and I look at the items that I have contributed to...
  6. The oats jumped out at me too. Even if they are gluten free oats it's possible they're just too tough for her system at this time. Is it possible she's also dairy intolerant? The other thing that jumped out at me is how complex some of the foods are. It might be worth it to keep her diet very simple for the first month or so. Lean protein, no sauces...
  7. Nor_Tx that just blows! Are you on Remicade for your RA or is it for your GI issues? I'm wondering if there's an RA center you can go to for your Remicade which would relieve you from the conglomerates? I once had a doc that I didn't care for. Got stuck with her when my doc retired. Saw her twice and we just did not click. So I said I wanted to see...
  8. You had me at cobb salad roll! I use these wrappers too but haven't made fruit rolls yet. That's on my must do list for this weekend. What a great idea. I'm thinking a coconut-yogurt based dip with mint might be good with them. I have used them to make classic fried spring rolls because I was having a craving. I sauteed cole slaw mix (easier than chopping...
  9. This site has tons of info and pictures. Open Original Shared Link I have the ridges (figure 7) which is common with RA. I have absent lunula (figure 16) which is common with anemia and/or malnutrition. I have swelling around the nail (figure 30) which is common with lupus (oddly enough my RA doc is testing me for lupus which he said seems apparent...

    ARCHIVED Lactaid

In the beginning lactaid did work for me but at some point it stops being effective. I've been off dairy now for quite some time now and no longer dream about brie! I can tolerate a tiny bit of casein (ie, coffee creamer) now and then but I know when I've reached my limit when I get this odd discomfort in my ribs, left side under my stomach. My enterolab...
  11. I like the fruit that comes already cut up because I'm lazy like that. If it's already washed and cut into bite size pieces I'm more likely to eat it. I like fruit but I don't crave it so for me it needs to be easy. I usually buy strawberries, cantaloupe or fruit salad already prepped. I also buy bananas, mangos and apples. I love veggies and do crave...
  12. I'd say change your lipstick and lipbalm for sure and your mascara if you're prone to touching your eyes. Burt Bee's and Avon are great and affordable. I have one lip balm left from Burt Bee's that doesn't have soy in it and I'm savoring it (I can't do soy). Covergirl mascara is gluten-free.
  13. Thank you all for coming along this journey with me! I feel like I'm so close, that some answers are inevitable. My eyes look ok but my fingers are puffy and swollen. Haven't been able to wear my weddings rings in about a year. I'd say I look puffy all over Saw my new RA doc today and we talked about this fogginess. They're testing me for lupus...
  14. I like it! I don't think it's an overreaction at all. I guess you could gauge your audience and go from there. Rat poison, arsenic, and even e-coli paint a very clear picture. I've used 'raw chicken' as an affective analogy, particularly when discussing cross contamination. Things like: You wouldn't plop a raw chicken on the counter and then prepare a...
  15. Magpie thanks for brining this to our attention. If we all write nice and informative letters then maybe Rachel will make the correction. I'm steeling myself for the bevvy of misinformation as celiac month approaches. On one hand I'm glad it's getting coverage but on the other hand there is so much bad information circulating. I suppose we shouldn't be...
  16. I have lines, more like raised ridges in my nails. Let's see... the lines go from the cuticle to the end of the nail, is that considered vertical or horizontal? They used to be so brittle, bendy and easily peel but they have gotten stronger since going gluten-free. They used to have little nicks in the ridges too but those have gone away. They also seem shinier...
  17. I was about to post the same thing, being a little bit celiac is like being a little bit pregnant! Your mom had it, you have the genes and you did well on the gluten-free diet. It sounds pretty conclusive to me. I will never understand why doctors want us to be on death's door before they will agree we have an illness. Damaged villi is only one...
  18. I hope this doesn't sound snarky but why would you scoop cat food bare handed? We have a cat as well and keep her food in a tupperware container than we can shake out into her bowl. This way I never touch her food. It's good practice for us gluten-free folks to be really wary of what we touch, wash our hands frequently and treat anything with...
  19. Have you tried making that same meal with rice you've cooked yourself? A lot of those pre-packaged foods have soy and other crap in them which could be the culprit and not the rice itself. I find that I can have white rice without trouble but brown rice doesn't sit well. It's likely got too much for fiber/bran for my system to handle at this time...
  20. I second that sentiment, your doctor is an ass. I've been gluten free since last summer and soy free since December and I'm still recovering and still trying to narrow down what other foods may be giving me trouble. While I feel so much better than I did before this is a process, an ebb and flow of progress and set backs. Recovery time is so...
  21. Yes, yes, yes, this is it. Thank you for sharing. This is exactly what I mean. I just don't care. I don't care that I'm not at the top of my game and that I'm not juggling a million things or that the house isn't in tip top shape or that my hair looks like deep fried a**. I feel so laissez faire, unburdened and relaxed. It's kind of nice. But then the memory...
  22. A few days to a week on average. I have RA so I'm always pushing through while fatigued and achy. That's a norm for me. When glutened I get a food poisoning like reaction so that first day or two I feel physically beat up but mentally ok. I do continue to work but I can work from home whenever I want to so those 'dragged behind a bus days' can be spent at...
  23. I say GO! No question about it. Rarely do we get the opportunity to do such things especially as we get older. Jobs, kids, careers, life all seem to take precedence and once you hit that full time job you won't be able to take months off to experience such an amazing journey (you'll get 2-3 weeks of vacation tops). I wish I had traveled more when I was younger...
  24. Insightful!! Going to mull this over. You gave me a lot to think about. Thanks
  25. This is a great way to describe it! I don't feel like myself which is what I've been saying to my docs for about.... 5-6 years. Though the way I have felt has changed over that time frame. Currently it's like there's a layer of gauze between me and the world. I've seen this mentioned a few times on the board. What does it mean?
