  1. If in doubt, the best way to answer the question is to contact the manufacturer. There is usually an 800 number on the can. That way you can be certain.
  2. You can be gluten sensitive and not have the full damage in the intestinal tract to qualify for the GI doc to say you have celiac. One of my docs said that the big difference is whether the damage is bad enough to show up in the GI tract or whether you are just waiting for it to happen. You can also have a true allergy to the grains containing gluten...
  3. I know within minutes, my daughter can take days. We do each have a specific pattern that we have learned to recognize over time.
  4. Looking back, I know the celiac was around for decades, but at a level that no doctor even considered it. It took getting mono at 35 for my celiac disease symptoms to become full blown. The fatigue was miserable. I constantly felt as though I was in a hypoglycemic situation. I still get nasty headaches and jitters if I don't eat regularly and properly. ...
  5. Perrigo Labs makes a store-brand of Zantac 75 that is gluten-free also. I don't have the problem every day but when it do it is nasty. I keep this around to cut it off at the pass.

    ARCHIVED Weight Gain

If you are either gaining or losing and are pretty certain it is not a dietary issue, have your thyroid checked. Those like me who are hypothyroid, tend to gain weight even if they don't eat much at all. Those with overactive thyroids tend to lose weight even if they are eating enough. My husband tends to slack off taking his thyroid medicine. When he...
  7. Some restaurants are easier than others. Take time to check out some of the posts and find a restaurant that is praised here and has a local unit where you are. Take your card with you and do your best to be bold but not obnoxious. Keep it simple for that first try...Maybe a steak with no seasonings, a baked potato with butter, and some steamed veggies...
  8. During yesterday's research marathon, I came across at least one other site that had done something similar. There was a simple explanation of celiac disease/DH, a listing of some of the more common symptoms and accompanying other diagnoses such as FMS, IBS, etc. A quick, restaurant-card-like list of appropriate foods and things to steer clear of...
  9. Jenn had stopped growing when she was diagnosed. She was also not maturing. Since going gluten-free, she has grown up and matured significantly. It was like going from child to instant adult in physical maturity.
  10. I was also diagnosed late in life (at least compared to the rest of you). I am a whopping 4' 11 3/4" tall. Don't leave off that extra 3/4" or I can get testy! My sister is significantly taller than I.
  11. For those of you who cannot have the soy that is often in these things, take a tablespoon or two of water and add to it a dash of salt, a tsp of cocoa, and 2 tsp of sugar. Heat them either in the microwave or on the stove until just boiling. Stir well. If you like your syrup really rich, add a little butter. This makes a great syrup for hot or cold chocolate...
  12. Especially for the first few months, your system can react to seemingly nothing. Sometimes our systems are just more sensitive than at other times. Mine does that periodically for no apparent reason. If it is a significant incident, I can usually point it back to a specific new food or a changed formulation. Also, if you have non-gluten-free folks in...
  13. Okay, Barbara, where do you live (and work)??? I like Sonny's Barbeque's Sweet Sauce. I just e-mailed them to reverify that it is still gluten-free. We also use Kraft Honey BBQ. If you like the stronger vinegar flavor, Williamson is probably more to your liking.
  14. Mine has gotten much better the longer I am gluten-free. Hopefully yours will also if it is just a side-symptom of the celiac disease.
  15. Jules, some of the least knowledgeable people I have ever come across were those I taught with in the university setting. Have you noticed where you are that the more education they get the dumber they seem to be about everyday things??? I promised myself when I went for post-graduate work that I would never get like that. After sitting through a few master...
  16. Well, I am miffed at my eleven year old. It is his job to clean the kitchen and he got most of it done but left off my bread machine pan...so no cheese toast tomorrow morning. I think it was a conspiracy to get me to break down and fix pancakes or cinnamon rolls instead!
  17. Thanks. I'll experiment with those also. My griddle is not too hot I don't think because it takes a while to get them cooked through and if it is too hot they are really gooey inside.
  18. I tried the webrings link, but because I use a filtered internet service I can't get at it. Apparently somewhere along the way it can segue off to some rather, uh, "interesting" stuff. I have used them before and didn't get anywhere I did not expect, but then I probably wasn't looking for it either.
  19. I came across this site when researching a question messaged to me privately. There is a lot of info not just on celiac disease/DH but also on FMS, etc. Thought some of you might want to spent a little time "having fun". Some links you have to go a couple of layers deep to see pics and such. Open Original Shared Link
  20. CDF has an alert posted on their site about a labeling issue with Food For Life Baking Co. Wheat & Gluten Free Millet bread in the bright yellow package. Seems it said rye but never contained it. It was just a labeling error. Just thought I would pass the info on. Here's the link if you want to view. Open Original Shared Link
  21. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try.
  22. Be sure to take a restaurant card with you or at least print out the information for the chef. If they know what to do, they can usually give you something acceptable. Some places are better than others. If you are not sure where to get a card, e-mail me and I'll send you a sample of one of mine.
  23. Breakfast has been my nemesis for a while now. My cholesterol is high, so they don't want me to have too many eggs. I love them, though. I lived off of them for breakfast for the first year. Now we keep a loaf of bread and have cheese toast or toast and jelly in the mornings. We also keep yogurt as a quick snack or breakfast. I make a mean gluten-free cinnamon...
  24. By the way, someone commented that he did not have celiac any more. You do not outgrow celiac disease. The symptoms can mediate and will often appear to disappear for a few years as the child gets older and especially during the teen years, but the damage is quietly continuing and will rear its ugly head again in a few years, usually in the late twenties...
  25. I just reverified with Kroger that their yogurts are gluten-free. We like the strawberry banana or the strawberry vanilla. At 39 cents per container, they are a great quick snack.
