ARCHIVED What If Tests Are Negative?
kareng replied to marogers5's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
OK. It doesn't actually have wheat as an ingredient. It's a " may contain"/ possibility of cc statement. -
ARCHIVED Item Flagged As Gluten, Website Says No?
kareng replied to SMRI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I linked to show you the very odd varieties of wheat that are out there. But most I never even seen in a non- specialty food. Lots of them say " wheat" or barley . Go with the app. Don't get the frozen drinks. Buy only the brands the app has looked at. Sounds like it will steer you away from gluten. If you really want to be sure you aren't getting any... -
ARCHIVED Item Flagged As Gluten, Website Says No?
kareng replied to SMRI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have seen " modified wheat starch" a couple of times. It's that stuff that tests at less than 5 ppm. They use it a lot in Europe. It's very expensive and wouldn't be used very often from what I hear. And it still lists the word " wheat" in the ingredients. Back to these apps - I have seen people believe the app over their own eyes on products... -
ARCHIVED Item Flagged As Gluten, Website Says No?
kareng replied to SMRI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That is a common problem with these apps. Really best to read the ingredients as the packaging has the most up-to-date ingredients. I have had those pouch drinks and they are fine. They are made with wine. In the US, on the rare occasion the MFS is made with wheat, it will say so. MFS (Wheat) -
ARCHIVED When To Give Up On Symptoms Improving On The gluten-free Diet?
kareng replied to nvsmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey, just a quick drive- by here. On the mouth sores - try a toothpaste that is "√ No Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfates". Helped my son with mouth sores. He uses Jason's or Biotene ( Colleen suggested that one and it seems to be easier to find). Might try a shampoo without that, too. Supposed to help hair loss? -

ARCHIVED Peanut M&ms
kareng replied to Debgfree's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't had any issues with peanut or regular M&Ms. Or regular Coke for that matter. I have an issue with some diet sodas because of the artificial sweetener - not gluten. -
ARCHIVED Should I Do The Gluten Challenge Or Not?
kareng replied to dan95's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Was just about to post this, too. Seems like you don't really want to be gluten free unless you need to? If you want a positive result on the blood test (If you have Celiac) you must be eating gluten. Also, your first post said you have been gluten free for 2/3 weeks? ARCHIVED Maltodextrin?
kareng replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just a head's up - this whole thread is from 2004-2005. If you have a problem eating rice - I would think that is why you can't eat a rice based cereal. -

ARCHIVED Feel Like It's Always Something...so Frustrated!
kareng replied to icelandgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My mother had this. Every couple of months - another UTI. Finally landed her in the hospital - UTIs in the elderly can lead to some other things. Then they cultured it and she was able to get the right meds to wipe it out! It didn't come back! I think things like yogurt and other probiotics are all you can do. I don't think they are supposed to be...- 27 replies

ARCHIVED Feel Like It's Always Something...so Frustrated!
kareng replied to icelandgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sometimes the standard dose doesn't get rid of the UTI. It's good that they are culturing it. That way you can take what you need to wipe it out and not have to do this again in a month! Hope you feel better soon.- 27 replies

ARCHIVED Insatiable Appetite In Toddler
kareng replied to tigerlily6200's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I suppose.... But.... If she is active and growing, maybe she just needs more food then you are giving her? Maybe a different balance of foods - fiber, fats, proteins? My 2 boys always ate differently from each other. The one that was 3 years younger always ate more than the older one starting at about 18 months. I would have an 18 month old eating... -

Open Original Shared Link "A gluten challenge is the period of time when gluten is added back into a person’s diet to assist in the diagnosis of celiac disease. ARCHIVED Could I Have Celiac Disease?
kareng replied to mjcoelnc's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
How often are you getting the blood tests for Celiac? If you have a " first- degree" relative, you should be tested every few years. And if you aren't following that recommendation - you would want to get tested when you have some symptoms . You have symptoms & related conditions, so I would say you need to get tested. -
ARCHIVED Amella Caramels
kareng replied to CK1901's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If they have an official certification - they must have tested the candy to whatever level that group requires. So, if its the certification that you can get for foods that test <10 ppm - they must have very good practices in place to get the product to that low level. There is no legal requirement that they tell you if other gluten products are run... -

Yep! I have seen & heard some real doozys. One of my favorites - someone posted that a waiter told them the white bread was Ok - it's made from rice. I read that to my then 13 yr old son - " that's great, Mom! You can eat white bread!.......wait....what?......that can't be right....you mean REGULAR white bread? .wheat flour is white and makes...
