ARCHIVED Develop Other Food Allergies Besides Gluten?
psawyer replied to Juls's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Newly diagnosed celiacs often have to avoid dairy. The enzyme to digest lactose (milk sugar) is produced in the villi--the same part of the small intestine that is damaged by the autoimmune reaction in celiac disease. Many of us are able to resume eating dairy products once the villi heal. Some of us have an issue with casein (milk protein) and must stay... -
ARCHIVED "Super Sensitive" Celiacs.....
psawyer replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
The search function is context sensitive. If you use it while viewing a topic, it will by default search only that topic. You can change this via the pull down menu to the right of the search box. -
ARCHIVED What Other Vague Labelling Do I Need To Watch?
psawyer replied to divamomma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Do they contain hidden gluten? Possibly, but generally not a concern. No. No. No. Wheat will be labeled as a top allergen, but barley can sometimes hide under this label. -
ARCHIVED "gluten Free" Products Making You Sick?
psawyer replied to padma's topic in Super Sensitive People
I'm not sure where to start with this. Many people with celiac disease have, or develop, other sensitivities. Just because you react badly to a food does note necessarily mean it contains gluten. Shrimp is gluten-free, but I get really sick if I eat it. I have celiac disease. I get sick if I eat shrimp. That does not mean that shrimp contain gluten. It... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free-But Proccessed With Wheat?!
psawyer replied to Live Love Twillight's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
An added thought: Most manufacturers adhere to what is called "good manufacturing practices." These include segregation of ingredients and cleaning of equipment. Consider this: If you allow any foods in your home that contain wheat (or another gluten source), then your home is a "shared facility." If you use the same plates and cutlery, or put them... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free-But Proccessed With Wheat?!
psawyer replied to Live Love Twillight's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I believe that you are in the United States. In the US, there is currently no legally defined meaning for gluten-free. It means whatever the company wants it to mean. At the end of the day, it means what the plaintiff's lawyer can convince a jury it should mean. Canada has a clear rule that no ingredient derived from wheat, rye, barley or oats... -

J and I both enjoy it. We have been several times since they started offering it. I understand that their source is Kinnikinnick. Psillies be warned, my post count is creeping close to a big rollover. Make sure you have towels handy as well as the phone number for a plumber. -
ARCHIVED It's Official, Gluten Must Be Labelled!
psawyer replied to num1habsfan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not completely sure about "spices" in the US, but in Canada "spices" can not include anything derived from a grain--spices are gluten-free. "Seasonings" is a horse of another color, and many people, including some who should know better, confuse seasonings with spices. I certainly don't expect the news media to know the difference. -

ARCHIVED I Feel Like The Only Guy Who Cant Eat Gluten
psawyer replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You must just have a knack for meeting women. : It is estimated that the prevalence of celiac disease is equally divided among males and females, but that many more females are actually diagnosed. Given the difficulty in getting a correct diagnosis, persistence is often required. A woman is much more likely to keep pushing and going to the doctor... -

Egad, I don't think this thread has ever gone so long without a post! Just over 50 hours! In a rare event, I worked on a Sunday today. Now I am home and it is time to make pizza. Yum! Yum! -

ARCHIVED Can Pediatrician Do Testing (Or Gi Only)?
psawyer replied to Hazelnutty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The blood tests should be available to any primary care physician, including your pediatrician. Whether insurance will pay is a different question which I can not answer. -

ARCHIVED Where's The Google Search!?!
psawyer replied to Truleesmom's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
The Google search is not available directly from the forum pages. Check that you are using the correct scope with the search. It is sensitive to where it is launched from. If you are in a topic, it will by default search only that topic. If in a forum index, by default only that forum will be searched. You can change the scope with the pull-down menu in... -

ARCHIVED Corn Gluten Meal- Is It "gluten"?
psawyer replied to Catsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Scientifically speaking, the term "gluten" refers to the prolamine protein in grain--any grain. The protein found in corn (zein) is not "gluten" in the sense that we use the word, and is safe for people with celiac disease. -
No worries here either.

ARCHIVED Low Iga Serum In Child
psawyer replied to selah7's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is difficult to interpret results without having the reference ranges. They vary from lab to lab. A low overall serum IgA calls the other IgA results into question. They may be falsely negative if the immune system is deficient. I can't comment on why the total IgA would be low--that is outside my knowledge. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Grocery List
psawyer replied to Boilermaker's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As Lisa said, formulas change all the time. Lists can help you decide which products to look at, but they are not a substitute for reading the label. -
ARCHIVED Reliability Of Manufacturer Lists?
psawyer replied to fumbling mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My rule is: when the web site ingredients differ from the ones on the product you actually have, believe the product label. Ingredients change, and sometimes the web site is slow to be updated. Also, the web site may describe today's plant output while the product you have was made weeks or months ago.
