ARCHIVED New And Curious
sa1937 replied to pipermarau's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You might also consider buying a crockpot if you don't have one all ready. It's pretty easy to throw everything together and have a nutritional meal that pretty much does itself with minimal effort on your part. Somehow I hope you can educate the person you live with to deal with the cross-contamination issues...I know it's not always easy based on... -
ARCHIVED Soggy Pizza Crust
sa1937 replied to coffeetime's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've thought about it but that's about it. My daughter has one very contaminated with gluten and I know my son-in-law used to make a killer pizza. I suggested she run it through her oven's self-cleaning cycle (she also has celiac). So yes, I know how it works. ETA: For last few pizzas I've made, I've sautéed the veggies first...what a difference ... -
ARCHIVED Cupcakes

Yum again! I am making ganache tomorrow to go on the flourless chocolate cake that I'll be making (the King Arthur recipe). -
ARCHIVED Cupcakes
sa1937 replied to come dance with me's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The muffins are outstanding and especially if you nuke them for a few seconds so the chocolate chips melt! Darn, now I want some chocolate!!! For all I know, they may have used readymade icing. Am sure you could do a quick search to find a recipe or someone may come on and post one. -
Yes, this thread is very old so am not sure Ian will even see your post.

ARCHIVED Durkee Lemon Flavor Pie Filling
sa1937 replied to mindbodyspirit7's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Unless you have a problem with soy, I'd say you're safe! I just looked at a can of store brand apple pie filling I have and it says modified food starch (corn) on the label. -
ARCHIVED Soggy Pizza Crust
sa1937 replied to coffeetime's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I made that pizza once from the King Arthur website and it stuck to the pan badly in spite of olive oil oozing out the sides. I've since bought their flour to try it again as I mixed up my own the first time. Just yesterday I got a pizza pan with holes in it from Amazon (Fox Run Pizza Crisper). I lined it with foil (oiled) and after prebaking, I ditched... -
ARCHIVED Successfully Clean Wooden Utensils?
sa1937 replied to organicmama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can't imagine how you'd ever get gluten out of anything wooden or plastic. At least I wouldn't know how. Personally I'd replace them, which is what I did with mine. Your old stuff could be donated to charity or freecycled. I threw out a bunch of Tupperware, too, as I knew I'd never get it clean. I've heard cast iron can be put in the oven on the... -
ARCHIVED Cupcakes
sa1937 replied to come dance with me's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Were those chocolate cupcakes or the Double Chocolate Muffins (which obviously aren't iced). I did buy a pack of the muffins one time only and they were yummy. The gals at the health food store told me that they ice them with peanut butter icing. YUM!!! -
ARCHIVED Durkee Lemon Flavor Pie Filling
sa1937 replied to mindbodyspirit7's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know if mindbodyspirit7 reads the forums any more since this is a rather old thread. Unless it states otherwise on the package, modified food starch would be safe here in the U.S. -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Had Troubles With Crystal Light?
sa1937 replied to wilbragirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Be aware that this is a very old thread and product ingredients do change from time to time. That said, Kraft is a very good company as far as labeling is concerned and if there would be gluten in any of their products, it would clearly state (wheat or whatever) on the label. Some people do have problems with artificial sweeteners. I don't know that... -
ARCHIVED Cupcakes
sa1937 replied to come dance with me's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've been known to pay what appears to be ridiculous prices to support a cause...like when my granddaughters were doing fund-raising for various things through school or Girl Scouts. And I was also shell-shocked to see how expensive certain things were when I first went gluten-free. I've gotten used to that. I probably wouldn't be inclined to buy your... -

Open Original Shared Link has a list of substitutions and gluten-free flour blands including one for self-rising flour. You could try your own recipe to see how it works with this blend (you'll probably have to add xanthan gum). Here's also a recipe from their website for Open Original Shared Link -

Jules Shepard has a recipe on her blog for a cake (either white or chocolate) and she's big on substitutions. Open Original Shared Link While you may not have her flour, here's the recipe for Open Original Shared Link, which I think hers is based on. Here's the link for Open Original Shared Link to give you some ideas from her for a boy's birthday. -
Gluten-Free Bisquick already has xanthan gum in it so am curious why you would have to add more. Did you have a recipe that called for an additional amount?

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
sa1937 replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I bought OreIda fries...the package is marked gluten-free but it's really hidden way down on the side (like almost at the bottom). Nothing like announcing it clearly, huh? I've bought them at Wal-Mart before but yesterday I got them at Food Lion. The brat patties were just okay...at least fast and easy to fix. I prefer their Italian sausages though... -

ARCHIVED Is The Prevelance Of Celiacs Only 1:133?
sa1937 replied to Jungle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've always read 1 in 133 have celiac but gluten sensitivity is also now being recognized (finally). There's an interesting article in the new issue of Open Original Shared Link magazine...an interview with Dr. Fasano from the Univ. of Maryland School of Medicine's Center for Celiac Research. Remember the big push in May to get the FDA to come up with... -

ARCHIVED Flour
sa1937 replied to Boss'Wife's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Pamela's Baking & Pancake Mix is not the same as all-purpose gluten-free flour. It really is a mix and I absolutely love it! One of my favorite products. I buy it on the subscribe-and-save plan on Amazon (6 bags at a time although mine are the smaller bags). Have you used it yet? Besides making pancakes and muffins, it is my go to mix for making... -

ARCHIVED Frustrating Results!
sa1937 replied to svs's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think your body has given you the answer that the blood tests did not! If you weren't eating gluten at the time of the tests, they wouldn't be accurate. Actually there's a possibiity of false negatives anyway. And if he did the tests again, you'd get the same negative results so it wouldn't prove anything. Welcome to the forum!!!
