ARCHIVED Buying Bread Vs. Bread Machine
sa1937 replied to suziq0805's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Holy cow! So sorry to hear about your mixer...that is the same model I have. How old was it? I bought mine slightly over a year ago so I think it's out of warranty. So far, so good. I know a lot of recipes for gluten-free yeast breads, especially, call for mixing at a pretty high speed. I wonder if that's taxing the mixer too much. I've cut back the... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
sa1937 replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just threw chicken in the oven and I'll have red potatoes and yellow squash. Now that's looking a lot better than last week! Wonder if I can keep it up all week. I've been in a terrible rut lately. And fresh blueberries later this evening. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Chicken Broth...
sa1937 replied to josh052980's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I also like Progresso chicken broth, as well as their beef broth (they're gluten-free). I have also used Kitchen Basics and right now have Pacific Homestyle (both chicken and beef), both of which are marked gluten-free on the box. -

sa1937 replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks so much, Liz! I will try it to see how it compares with the other recipes I've used. And I do have both sorghum flour and potato starch. -
Welcome! You've come to the right place to get your questions answered. A lot of us have been given very little guidance by our doctors so what you experienced is pretty normal. You might want to read, read and read the posts on this forum as a lot of people have been or are in the same boat. There are a few books that I can think of off hand that...

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
sa1937 replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I haven't tried that one...don't have any of Carol Fenster's cookbooks. Is the recipe online? Flour? I've got flour! Jules had a Memorial Day special...buy two bags, get one free. First time I've bought anyone's flour. Otherwise I'd mix my own "Nearly Normal Flour", which I figure hers is based on. -

Shovel? In exchange for food? Darn, I never thought of your terrible winters ...I only thought about gourmet food!!! I don't do winter, even here...merely put up with it while waiting for spring. Yes, so far this is my favorite crust. And I recently bought 3 five-lb. bags of her flour. The only other pizza crust I've tried is from... -

Yes, considering I pretty much avoided it and cheese for almost a year (I'm not counting the time I bought the exorbitantly over-priced Amy's cheese pizza that was so dreadful). I think it's been at least two or three weeks since I made it. Your pizza sounds soooo gourmet! Think I'll stop by for a piece when you make it. Actually, can I just come... -

I made pizza again using Jules Shepard's recipe and doctored it up a bit more with additional Italian herbs and crushed red pepper. Added saut -
I like Colgate Total...at least it's inexpensive and available everywhere.

ARCHIVED Dairy A Bigger Problem After Going Gluten-Free?
sa1937 replied to TexasJenn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Some of us have had to give up dairy products after going gluten-free. Maybe I had a lactose problem before but it definitely became more pronounced. I did have GI problems, which led to my diagnosis. I still use Lactaid milk but have started eating more cheese, especially hard cheeses like cheddar. While they work for some people, Lactaid tablets... -
ARCHIVED Buckwheat Bread How To Substitute Egg In It?
sa1937 replied to gluteneggfree's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Open Original Shared Link has some substitutions listed for a number of things. Hope this helps. -
To add to what GFinDC said, Ancient Harvest quinoa doesn't need to be prerinsed.

I pulled up the DigestaQure website and came away feeling that if sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And I couldn't find anything about it on this forum. If it was that good, I think someone here would be shouting it from the rooftops. ETA: Corrected spelling

ARCHIVED Anyone Feel Like A Full Time Chef?!
sa1937 replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Right now I am totally sick of cooking. But that goes in spurts. Maybe because it's summer and I'd rather be doing anything other than cooking, which just seems like such a chore at the moment. My meals certainly do reflect that, too. -
ARCHIVED Did You Have + Ttg?
sa1937 replied to Meg123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was highly positive on my celiac panel and my biopsy was also positive. -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
sa1937 replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Last night I had a hamburger on a Rudi's bun. The bun was okay. It was the only brand my local health food store had. I think I can do just as well by making my own hamburger buns and a whole lot cheaper than $5.99 for four. I still want to try Udi's. -
Welcome! You might want to try a whole foods diet (fresh meat, veggies, fruit, etc.) and avoid trying to find gluten-free prepared foods for now. And many of us have problems with lactose intolerance so you might want to cut out dairy at least temporarily. Since you like pasta, Tinkyada makes a good gluten-free brown rice pasta. And Udi's makes pretty...

I have no idea of any links but will say that I still have my appendix as well as all my other body parts.

ARCHIVED Question For Lactiad Milk Users
sa1937 replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just went and smelled mine...seems fine, no strange or offensive smell. Actually it doesn't smell like anything. Exp. date June 28. Wonder if there was a bad batch. -
I doubt going gluten-free will help you to wear earrings. You could very well have a metal allergy (nickel). I've always had that problem but there are hypoallergenic earrings available that I've been able to wear successfully. You might want to check out Open Original Shared Link. I've been wearing their earrings since the 1980's. If you sign up for...

ARCHIVED What Would One Slice Of Whole Wheat Bread Do To You ?
sa1937 replied to collgwg's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Meats and fish, fruits and veggies, rice, etc. The list goes on.... In other words a whole foods diet. -
ARCHIVED Making Superfine Brown Rice Flour?
sa1937 replied to BlueTaelon's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
King Arthur Flour has a recipe for Open Original Shared Link that uses a brown rice flour mix. I wonder if that's why their gluten-free breads require two rises...I would think the flour would absorb more of the moisture that way. -
ARCHIVED Substitute For Garfava In Bette Hagman's Mix
sa1937 replied to Melstar23's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Garfava is a combination of garbanzo bean flour and fava bean flour. I have garfava but haven't used it yet. I do have The Gluten Free Gourmet Bakes Bread but haven't tried any of the recipes yet. Glad to know you have found the recipes work with your substitutions. I've been wanting to try the Featherlight bread recipe. One of these days....
