  1. I was actually going to come to your MIL's defense as being kindly ignorant. Can't tell you how many well-meaning friends have served me soup and proudly proclaimed "There's no wheat in it!" only to see pasta floating everywhere! But your MIL KNOWS and tells you that it's worth eating even if it does make you sick?? I have no words for her brand...
  2. Same for me, ArtGirl... but sooner... tummy hurricanes and explosive D... but it's not so bad that I'm incapacitated.
  3. I GAINED more than 30 lbs. after going gluten-free, but I blame myself only. I OD'd on foods I was allowed to have to make up for all I felt I was losing... like rice (risotto is my fav!!) and potatoes. Now I'm on a diet and have lost almost 20 lbs... only 30 more to go!!
  4. Not a direct answer to your question, but we went to our fav Mexican restaurant and I asked the waiter to please confirm that the tortilla chips they put out w/ the salsa were indeed ONLY corn. He went, exasperated, to ask and came back w/ a sheepish look on his face. He told me that they had just switched to a brand of corn tortilla that was DUSTED w/ wheat...
  5. I've only had one and my doc warned me that he did not sedate much. Well, he didn't sedate at all... and it was no big deal. In fact, I watched the whole thing, asking questions as he went along. There was no pain or even discomfort. The prep sucks, but the test itself is so not a big deal... I tell everyone who's reaching that magic age of 50 to go for it...
  6. I am constantly trying out new gluten-free recipes on my kids. FINALLY got the cornbread dressing down and my homemade cornbread has always been gluten-free. THIS year, I'm coating onion rings in cornstarch and frying them up for green bean casserole!! The only thing I don't get to eat are those awful little prepackaged dinner rolls that ya gotta buy in the...
  7. I'm so sorry about your kitty. Our pets do become such an important member of our families! (((hugs)))
  8. I've JUST tasted the Bards... first beer in 4 years!! It was delicious! I've read that one of the others is better tasting, but don't know which one. I'm thrilled to find the Bards... altho at $46/case... it'll have to be only an occasional treat!
  9. Sweet hubby always asks when he goes to the beer store if they carry gluten-free beer. Yesterday he brought me a case of Bards Beer!! First beer I've had in 4 years... it was good... GOOD!!!! (We live about an hour north Phila. so I'm thinking Bards will be everywhere??)
  10. This is great news!! I enjoyed their coffee shakes before discovering celiac disease, so I'll be looking for these!! Thanks for the heads up!

    ARCHIVED Professional Dilemma

I would think, in this sue-happy day and age, her doc would ask her to sign a form releasing him of responsibility of complications of Celiac Disease when she refuses to follow the diet. I guess the "complications" term is too broad when it comes to us, but I'm surprised the doc isn't covering his butt.
  12. I say it all the time... I must read EVERY SINGLE LABEL, EVERY SINGLE TIME!! I'm usually really good about it!! So, I'm on this wt. loss diet that's essentially lean protein, fruits, and veggies, and small amts. of starch (for me that means rice, potatoes, squashes... the others aren't gluten-free. My celiac symptoms are so nonexistent right now...
  13. LOVE it!! I love the whole Thurs. night lineup. My Name is Earl The Office Grey's Anatomy My weekly favs!!!
  14. Looked up Celiac Disease in my 1972 nursing medical dictionary and this is what it said, in essence. Celiac Disease is a rare condition where the patient can not digest sugars and fats. Some say that wheat and rye play a part. It's similar to sprue and some say it is the same. (Symtoms were similar to those we know of today) Treatment is a low fat...
  15. I've even french fried onion rings (w/ cornstarch) to make the onion topping on the green beans... it's all doable... we just have to find an acceptable way!
  16. I've had every shape, color, consistency... that there is no more "normal" in my vocab. I've had exploding butt acid that requires immediate toilet bowl cleaner, I've had perfectly formed... just like before celiac disease, I've had small pieces that are almost like "sheets" of poop, if you can imagine that. I've had dark brown... sort of dark green.....
  17. My eyes are popping out of my head... gluten-free egg noodles?? Wait till I tell my daughter!!
  18. The applesauce molassas cake looks delicious!! Thanks for posting!!
  19. I'll play... 1. FIRST NAME? Leslie 2. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE? Nope. My dad used to tell me he wanted to name me Fanny so he could say to people, "Would you like to kiss my Fanny?" haha 3. WHEN DID YOU LAST CRY? I can't remember....I'm not much of a crier 4. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING? It's okay 5. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT?...
  20. I had a tongue-in-cheek conversation w/ my doctor a few years ago and whined... "I'm gonna end up in a nursing home and they're gonna feed me bread and I'm gonna have diarrhea and they'll be mad at me cause I'm messing my drawers all the time and I'll get bedsores... and ... yada, yada, yada. The bracelet is a good idea, I think... but then you're at the...
  21. Ha ha... molten acid shooting out of my butt is my response... if they persist beyond my more polite answer of, "I have serious intestinal distress."
  22. Yea, I'm an ABC board reader too. I LOVE the show and can't wait to read the spoilers the next day to see all the little things I totally missed!!
  23. But... maybe it's TRUE and we can all be healed and eat all the foods we haven't been able to!! HA HA HA My son-in-law got an email from a guy who wanted to buy his car... and wanted him to accept a "cashier's" check for twice what the car was being sold for. He was to cash the check and mail the remainder back to the guy. My SIL wrote back to him...
  24. I've not found a Campbells soup yet that is gluten-free. The Progresso Cream of Mushroom is gluten-free. If you go to the organic/health food types of soup... those are often gluten-free. Ya just gotta read the labels.
  25. Manna from Anna bread mixes fan here. Check her out at www.mannafromanna.com. They're easy to make and the best bread I've found yet!
