There is no "standard" time line. Everyone is so very different. Age, degree of illness, surrounding factors of life, it all counts. You do your very best, read suggestions and take from that what you feel would work for you!

I was diagnosed when I was 59, I am now 66. I suspect there were problems all my life as I have always had constipation, tummy issues etc. That said, yes, given our age, we have messed up our body. However !!! Good things can and do happen! Our body can heal. And it will. It may take longer for those of us that are a little older but it will happen...

I was on 3 different anti-depressants for years as was told I was depressive bi-polar. One years after going g.f. I woke up one morning and just felt, good! I slowly, very slowly, worked my way off of all meds and have been off now for 4 years.. My doctor felt that my depression was gluten caused and once my body started to heal everything else fell into...

ARCHIVED Can you help settle this between my husband and I?
cap6 replied to Washingtonmama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sounds like 3 out of 4 have an issue with celiac/gluten. Husband needs to get with the program and be supporative. You cook, do it your way! -
ARCHIVED Newbie question- glutened by crumbs in RV
cap6 replied to ffyrebird's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Our rv is gluten free. period. It was two years pre-owned when we purchased it and I scrubbed top to bottom, vac'ed out the drawers, lined the drawers with fresh paper, lined the shelves, new sink strainers (those are impossible to scrub!) , and a total scrub of the the oven. All those nasty spots! Vac'ed all the cloth chairs. All of that done and... -
ARCHIVED When does the fatigue subside?
cap6 replied to Fbmb's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You do have a lot of stressers going on. Young kids & a puppy (may as well have a third kid) and a job is enough to make anyone tired! Add to that the fact that it does take time to heal. Your body is pulling as it heals and that alone will make you more tired. If your vit levels are ok, especially iron and b12 then, then work and kids are doing... -
ARCHIVED Sarsons Malt Vinegar

Agree - in U.S. it would NOT be considered safe. -
ARCHIVED Mc Cormick gluten-free Chili Mix?
cap6 replied to pdm1981's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They should be quite safe. McCormick is a good company and properly lists all ingredients. Or you can just add your own pure spices and then no worries at all! -
ARCHIVED frozen bags of veggies
cap6 replied to pdm1981's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Regular frozen veggies should all be quite safe. It's when you buy a mix (rice with peas and a flavor) that you run into a possible problem. Read the ingredient list. To be very safe buy a bag of any frozen veggie that has only that one ingredient - peas (or corn or whatever veggie it is) -
ARCHIVED Coffee
cap6 replied to Amanda Brown's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have not found a coffee to have gluten in it. Other ingredients yes such as flavoring that could bother your tummy just because, but not gluten. That said, always read the ingredient list. -
ARCHIVED When you get randomly poisioned
cap6 replied to Ennis-TX's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would tend to look at the ingredients in your artificial peanut extract and the chocolate syrup. Something there probably bothered you. -
As Kareng said, it is the cross contamination that will get you every time. The reason for the small pizzas is that the dough comes from the g.f. manufacturer usually frozen and is kept separate. So with that you are safe. Get to know your local pizza place. Ours changes gloves, takes the g.f. dough to a total separate area and uses total separate...

Since moving to Central Oregon we eat out more than in the past, mainly because we have to drive 30 minutes to get to the next "big" town and like to indulge in a lunch out. That said, we have found more and more places that offer a separate gluten free menu which makes it so much easier. Even when ordering off of the g.f. menu I always state "I am ordering...

ARCHIVED Energy drinks
cap6 replied to Megan16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Based on the list of ingredients on these types of drinks I would not recommend them to anyone, celiac or not. They are full of stuff that is just plain not good for you -
I eat out but only if they offer a gluten free menu. I do question the server as to how the food is prepped. If they can answer my questions with some intelligence then I will take a chance. I always say "I do have a food allergy. Gluten Free is not a choice for me". Most places understand the word "allergy". I usually order something fairly simple especially...
-
That's hard. You can try the "I come to be social," "I have serious food allergies", "I only come to drink"...... whatever might feel comfortable. I know celiac is not an allergy but more people understand if you say celiac is like a severe food allergy. Do go, have fun. Don't let food stop you. Yes, people give looks but honestly they get to know that...

ARCHIVED "I made it gluten free for you..."
cap6 replied to RMJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Agree! That is a difficult spot to be in. I have a friend who insists she can cook for me. I have tried the "I come for the company, not the food", "I am celiac.." etc. I finally gave up and said "I love you but no!". It's very hard. Very hard! But stay strong. -
I never ate at the fair but always "rewarded" myself with a nice glass of wine at the wine and beer patio! The corn on the cob might be ok but I have to agree with the poster who mentioned that stuff at the fair probably isn't terribly clean. Stuff your purse with snacks and enjoy. My partner would feel bad about eating in front of my and I would just...

ARCHIVED First glutening or something else?
cap6 replied to kam00096's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
SOunds like the quinoa. My partner can't process it while I can - in a limited amount. It's difficult to digest. Drop it from you diet for a couple of months then go back and try it again., Give that gut time to heal! -
Starbucks warning
cap6 replied to SherriN's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is something learned with experience. You may want to go with a simple coffee that offer less chance for cross contamination. Starbucks offers so many different drinks and do not "celiac" wash the equipment. -
ARCHIVED Staying at someone else's house?
cap6 replied to kam00096's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My elderly father has gluten from one end to the other. I scrub on part of the counter, put my food items on paper towels, take my own dish (or use paper) and take easy to prepare or already prepared meals. Good time to pull out those frozen left overs and take them with you. I take hard boiled egg for breakfast, salad.....anything easy to transport. ...
