  1. Cheat and ultimately you sign your own death certificate. Bottom line. My mother did it. It is not something to mess around with.
  2. We recently moved and various family members are due to visit this summer. The first group was just here for over a week, my adopted daughter and her children (9, 15, 17, 18). We provided all the food and the only problem was there was the expense of all the g.f. bread they consumed! I did buy separate mayo & mustard for them as we had regular hot...
  3. Do you have a sweet tooth at all? If so try this yummy chocolate treat: 1 ripe avocado 1/4 cup of cocoa powder 1/4 cup (organic) maple syrup 1/4 cup almond milk (I use coconut milk) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract put it all in a blender and puree till smooth. pour into small bowl, chill and eat. Sooooo good!
  4. Although some grains (rice, quinoa etc) are allowed on the celiac diet I, personally, would avoid them and all processed foods, as much as possible, for a few months. Load up on good cooked veggies, meats (baked chicken, fish....) and fruits. Even skip the nuts. Newly diagnosed, your gut is still raw and needs time to heal. Grains can be hard to digest...
  5. Oats...As said some celiacs can't handle oats, especially in the beginning when your gut is still healing. If you do eat them make sure that they are certified gluten free, which means that they have been grown, transported and processed separate from other grains. Bob's Red Mill is one brand to try. While they have regular gluten products all of their...
  6. Most ice cream is ok, just be sure to read the ingredients. I splurge on a chocolate Dove bar now and then. Most brands are ok. Ice cream parlors where they dig out of open cartons is a separate issue and I won't indulge there.
  7. I have come across that same "how gluten free are you" question myself." Actually it was a good thing as it alerted me to the fact that a restaurant may not be quite as careful if they thought I was a "fad" gluten free diner. Now I always just state that I am an extremely sensitive celiac and appreciate the extra care they would give in preventing cross...
  8. I agree, you should be just fine. But if it gives you peace of mind then by all means get a new one. Sometimes that ole peace of mind is worth more than the cost of something fresh and new!
  9. Unless your partner eats crackers in bed (seriously...mine did in the beginning!!!!) you should be fine. I think everyone is slightly paranoid at the start. I didn't want toget in a gluten eaters car for a long time. Try to relax. It takes time.

    ARCHIVED I Want To Cry.

I am so sorry. Too many are faced with this issue of having to seek help. As a former social services employee I say please, apply for food stamps (Snap, calfresh.....depending on where you live). Depending on your income (unemployment benefits etc) and number in your family you could qualify for some assistance. Many states now allow you to apply on...
  11. Good times!!!
  12. Please, please stay away from processed foods. The added ingredients in those food products will only help to slow down your return to health. Bone broth, as mentioned, is very high in the nutrients you need and healing to the gut. For a little added flavor you can throw in some carrots & celery tops while it simmers away. Sip on that throughout the...
  13. I like the picture suggestion! Like, why didn't I ever think about that!!! We just moved to a new state which means new health insurance so I will prob start this over again - this time with pics.
  14. It is a long time. But the frustrating part is that it is not constant but rather outbreaks. So.. I go to my primary dr and ask for a referral to the derm. By the time the referral comes through and I finally get the derm apt my lips are cleared up. The derm looks at me like I'm crazy. I try to explain and ask if I can call the next time I get an outbreak...
  15. Separate sponges/dish washing rags. Those sponges can retain tiny bits of gluten. Don't take a chance. Buy bright red ones for gluten users and stay safe!
  16. I do not fly out of country so can't comment on that, however I do carry a letter from my doctor stating that I am Celiac and need to carry my own food etc. I have had to use it twice when my food amount was questioned.
  17. This posting really blew me away! My lips get very red and inflamed to the point where I look like one of those little kids that constantly licks their lips. They peel, heal and then we start the cycle all over again. Very embarrassing. This started about a year before I was diagnosed. I have been gluten free for five years now and still struggle with...
  18. Before I was diagnosed I would get 8 or more at a time. They were one of my "big" symptoms. Nasty little things. Now, 5 years later I still get one every so often (every few months) but, for me, they are not are a result of exposure to gluten. Also they no longer ulcerate and are gone over night. It's a celiac thing according to my doctor,
  19. Yup. Too true. Oh, by the way.....you can have white bread cause it doesn't have wheat right?
  20. The only one I would worry about would be a shared pasta pan. You know how that pasta starch can stick and be difficult to clean. And for me it's probably more of a "head case" thing. lol A good scrub and throw through the dishwasher. You'll be fine.
  21. When new to this I really wondered about the "levels of sensitivity" myself since we hear about some things that make some people sick and not others. Here's the deal on that - Any bit of gluten will cause damage. As you heal a crumb of gluten may not make you physically sick (or as sick as you once used to get) as your gut is healing but it does cause...
  22. Don't forget that protein! I like to do a scrambled (or hard boiled) egg along with my kale in the morning.
  23. Having suffered from (at times) severe constipation all my life, my first reaction would be to say that there is no protein in your breakfast. You start the day off with sugar. Natural, but sugar none the less. I might switch things around a bit and have your lunch items for breakfast. Throw in a nice piece of chicken (or other protein) and veggie for...
  24. I couldn't agree with all of the above comments more! Although there are no longer children in the home it doesn't matter. Our home, our rules, our food, our way. Period. End of discussion. Our home is gluten free for the safety of those who live here. We have friends/family that come and stay for several days at a time. We have no problem feeding them...
  25. My goodness. What does the kid do, lick the packaging?
