ARCHIVED My Celiac Story - What A Long Journey
rdunbar replied to Melissaann829's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
the only treatment is a gluten-free diet, Dapsone is a drug, a steroid I believe, that may relieve the discomfort, but it has it's own side effects, and is even considered to be a 'dangerous' drug. There is a Dermatitas Herpetiformis forum on this board too, you may find some useful info also, make sure to avoid iodine, it makes DH flare up worse. It's... -
ARCHIVED Hair And Skin Products
rdunbar replied to livelaughloveu's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I ordered some soap from Gluten-Free Savonnerie ; I like it, and they have an entire line of products. It seemed worth it to have the peace of mind to know that it's made in a gluten free facility, and that thier company is focused on providing for people who are sensitive to gluten. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Here Grain-Free?
rdunbar replied to precious831's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi! I'm on pretty much a paleo diet for @ 6 months, and it's going well, i'm feeling a lot better. I've been off of corn for probably another 6 months more. I was eating some quinoa, and stopped that @4 months ago, even though as you said, it's a seed. I find i'm putting a bigger emphasis on meat in my diet than I used to, and sweet potatoes and acorn... -
ARCHIVED Can Outbreaks Of Dh Be Linked To Accidental Gluten Intake?
rdunbar replied to Marz's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
It was my experience that my DH got worse when I cut wheat out of my diet, but was essentially ' gluten lite' I was clueless as to what DH is, and about celiac, and gluten. I was still getting some gluten on a regular basis because I didn't know about all the precuations I had to take to avoid even trace amounts of gluten, CC. Maybe this process of slowly... -
ARCHIVED Pink Himalayan Salt Has Iodine. Argg!
rdunbar replied to rdunbar's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I'm noticing a HUGE difference in less than a week after switching to the kosher salt with no iodine. I noticed a significant difference in two days!My scalp is way less itchy, Ive been taking pictures with my phone to see how it's doing, because it's mostly on the back of my head, and can't see it in the mirror. I'm so excited about this actually getting... -
ARCHIVED Villi Absent
rdunbar replied to bincongo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It's called the small intestine, but it's actually not that small. I've heard the surface area of the small intestine is the same size as a tennis court. They take one small sample for a biopsy; sure it can give you a general idea or picture of what's going on, but I think it's worth taking with a grain of salt, maybe they took the sample from a part of... -
I used to be so careless about cc, eating out all the time. I went through @3 years thinking wheat was a problem, not knowing about celiac or gluten. My dermatitas herpetiformis never got better, my mood problems may have even gotten worse. I think maybe I was becoming more sensative to gluten . Boy, I wish I could have those 3 years back with what I know...

ARCHIVED Made Doctors Appointment
rdunbar replied to rdunbar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks, I'm not getting new spots, and the ones I have are not as bad as they were, it doesn't feel llike they are erupting . It still itches but not nearly as bad as it used to, and I can actually stand to put it under the shower. I can remember it getting super bad after eating lots of seafood, like when I was in baja in Mexico, and other times when... -
ARCHIVED Made Doctors Appointment
rdunbar replied to rdunbar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Dermatitas Herpetiformis is the version of celiac which attacks the skin in the form of a rash which is charcterized by clusters of blisters, which are kind of raised. Flaring up, the spots are red and extremely extremely itchy to the point of being painful. The antibodies are different than the ones which attack the GI system or nervous system/ brain It... -
ARCHIVED Made Doctors Appointment
rdunbar replied to rdunbar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't use any bodycare products that contain gluten. I even ordered some gluten free soap through the mail. Also am not eating anything remotely like soy. I'm really just eating meat, vegetables, salad, sweet potatoes, and fruit for about 5 months now, and have cut out all dairy, also no nightshades or legumes at all I was on a "gluten lite" diet for... -
ARCHIVED Made Doctors Appointment
rdunbar replied to rdunbar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm eating only unprocessed and unpackaged food, meat veggies and fruit. No grains at all,I have my own kitchen. And the only chance I have for CC is that my upstairs nieghbor insists on feeding her dog downstairs. She washes th dog food bowl in the sink, so I wash all my dishes in a plastic tub, and have all my food away from the dogfood. I've heard it... -
After getting frustrated that my DH is not improving for quite awhile, although I am being very strict about the diet and CC, I googled about pink Himalayan salt, and it turns out it DOES contain iodine. I was confused because iodine is not added to it like most salt. it just occurs naturally in it. I geuss it is just very ancient sea salt! I wish I would...

ARCHIVED Made Doctors Appointment
rdunbar posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was referred to a new doctor in my area by a fellow celiac who has been gluten free for 25 years; I figured she would know someone familiar and knowlegable about celiac, so I made an appointment for this week. I don't know how to prepare, or what to expect. I am self diagnosed, and have had no blood tests for celiac. When I went to the dermatologist @... -
Hi Donovan. I live nearby you in fairfax ! I'm glad that you got it figured out with the gluten free diet, and you are seeing results. That really seems like the real gold standard to me, getting better off of gluten , and then having it confirmed when the symptoms come back with an accidental glutening. It's really glaringly obvious once you learn how...

how long have you had the DH? from what I understand, if it is really DH, then you have Celiac, it's the same thing, only it's attacking the skin (as well as the gut); Apparantly, people with DH may show less, or no GI symptoms even. I can remember having an itchy scalp and blisters over 20 years ago, but only got severe GI symptoms over the last several...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have Bad Reactions To Quinoa?
rdunbar replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I phased quinoa out completely 3 months ago, and my guts felt better immediatly. I don't think it was causing symtoms other than hurting my tummy.I found out that is a gut irritant and can damage the villi of your intestine, although it does this in a very different manner than gluten which is autoimmune, not ideal when you are trying to heal up your gut... -
ARCHIVED Sick, Weak, Thin, And Ready For Answers
rdunbar replied to imsohungry's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry you are feeling so bad; I know how it is, and the weight loss can be alarming, I know, I lost 25 lb at one point, and that was starting at 155! Its horribly frustating when thier diagnosis turns out to be a fancy way of saying " I don't know what it is, so let's put a generic label on it so it looks like I know what I'm doing" as far as books, '... -
ARCHIVED Stomach Getting Regulated...
rdunbar replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
be patient, it's really like smoke and mirrors with this stuff it seems, it's hard to interpret whats going on.am i getting better, am i not getting better? whats going on? it can be really discouraging. that it takes time seems to be a common denominator, though. -
I've posted plenty of pity party posts, and frustated rants, so i thought I would change it up; After being very strict now for @ 6 months gluten/casien/CC free I'm really noticing how much better I'm feeling after eating. I'm beginning to realize that I never really enjoyed eating before because It never felt good my whole life. I remember panicking as...

ARCHIVED Tired Of Relatives In Denial About Celiac/gluten Problems
rdunbar replied to Tidings's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good thread I agree; it's especially frustrating when it's a relative that is being disrespectful. after going through so much in this process of finding out what is going on with gluten and celiac, and then trying to learn and adjust to being gluten free, it would be nice to get some understanding and support from loved ones. When you get the opposite... -
ARCHIVED I Stumble Around Like A Drunk Sometimes.
rdunbar replied to Pyro's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Another one of the many things I've had wrong with me that I never knew or thought had anything to do with each other is the stumbling, kind of woosey feeling accompanied by the lack of ability to focus my eyes, even double vision. Recently I found out it is called gluten ataxia. I was going through old family photos recently I found 2 photos where I have... -
ARCHIVED What Is Up With The Brain Fog?
rdunbar replied to rdunbar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks, I got the l-glutamine ( gluten free) and also realized I had run out of fish oil @ 4 days ago, maybe that had something to do with it? I've been trying to take it easy with the fish oil because it has some iodine which I learned recently I need to avoid because of the dermititas herpetiformis. I called the company and they said it contains a really... -
I ramdomly met someone who's 2 year old son was correctly diagnosed with DH all over his body, and that was 30 years ago.he was put on a gluten-free diet; she, and her husband both went gluten-free too, and thier health problems resolved. she said it took 2 years for the DH to go away. I still think it's amazing that they found a doctor 30 years ago that...
