  1. just for another data point, I tested negative to celiac and I don't the most common genes, but I'd read some of Dr H's research and since I had lots of balance problems in addition to the gastro stuff, I was determined to go gluten free even without a diagnosis. It probably took about 3 months before I noticed any improvment in the neuro stuff (yet only...
  2. Hello all! Sorry, I haven't been around much at all. Welcome, new peeps! I am another Australian (Sydney) I can't imagine what the food offerings would've been like a few decades ago. I'll be gluten free 3 years this June and there's just more and more out there. I adore the new Purebred range, and even Country Life is now heaps nicer with the new recipe...
  3. I haven't been around much lately but I am still so grateful to 'shroomie and many others for all their help when I was preparing to go gluten free. Even though I am not around so much, I am super grateful for them and that they are still here helping others who came after me. Thank you. I agree. I don't get any grief about what I do or don't eat...
  4. My suggestion for that situation is to say something like, if you really want to try one of those pot pies then I'll be happy to keep you company but I'll just get a drink. And I'll say that we need to organise it so I can eat either before or afterwards. I don't want to deny someone the opportunity to try something they couldn't usually have (if they lived...
  5. I take Zoloft which is also sertraline. I have suffered from depression and anxiety for most of my life and I have found Zoloft has really helped me. I was always really against the idea of taking antidepressants (they seemed so scary) and now I only wish I hadn't wasted so many years with that attitude. It is amazing not feeling anxious all the time...
  6. It's much less common to have corn as an ingredient in Aussie products than it is in the States, MaxConfusion. Like Mack said, wheat is a huge crop here.
  7. I meant to bring back the brownies but I uh, ate them all on the way. But I brought back english muffins (from the UK) and I regularly bring back Udi's bread / bagels, Chex cereal and snickerdoodles from the US. I've even brought back lara bars from the US once because they were so much cheaper there and I thought they might be an issue but it was fine ...
  8. Ooh, you lucky thing. Have a great trip! I loved the gluten free brownies that they sold in Sainsburys. I ate so many of them when I was there in 2010. Plus you can bring back stuff at much better prices than we pay here, customs don't mind packaged baked goods (I speak from experience, haha). crumbed fish and chips would be amazing. Haven't had that...
  9. I am so totally in love with the pure bred range. I have missed sausage sizzles so much but lately I have been having them on the roles (I split them in half and toast first) and they are SO GOOD. Plus I've been eating toast like there's no tomorrow. You don't want to know how much weight I have gained, OMG....
  10. I always get chocolates that I can't eat but I figure it's the thought that counts and I regift them. I actually really appreciate being saved the trouble of having to do my own shopping for those kinds of little gifts. I got given shortbread this year - my mother loved it. I'd much rather be given chocolates I can't eat but that someone else will appreciate...
  11. I'd have conversations with my colleague, turn to my computer to start working on whatever we'd discussed (literally seconds late), and then have to ask her what we were talking about. Happily, 2 + years gluten free and I am now *much* better at remembering. Me too. I used to crash into everything, I couldn't handle walking in crowds because I had...
  12. EbonyJade, like Saz says, read the label, there are tonnes that are fine but no easy list. Is there any product in particuar that you're wondering about? We could let you know what we eat. There are quite a few that are in the regular parts of the supermarket. I'm in Coles practically every day and I'd be happy to check anything you were curious about...
  13. Hehe, I remembering posting about this too. I'm now over 2 years gluten free and those dreams have pretty much gone. I had two recurring ones - one, that I was at a party and absentmindedly ate from a bowl of nibbles and the other was that I was being chased by cupcakes on little legs ;-) It's still new, you're anxious about making mistakes, your brain...
  14. Yes, I had the genetic testing and it was negative and I'd tested negative twice to the celiac panel so that was the end of the road formal diagnosis wise for me. Doesn't change the fast that I am extremely intolerant to gluten and I can see that so are other family members. It would've been nice to have those genes so I could get them to go gluten free....
  15. I'm in Australia where it's sensible to have a fear of snakes because gosh knows they are likely to be one of the top 10 world's most deadly. With the grassfed/grainfed health difference, I read paleo websites where they talk about the omega 6 and omega 3 ratios and they try to eat all grassfed. So there are some difference but most people aren't going...
  16. What sort of food are you eating? For me it's not totally the calories I eat but what I'm eating. I eat meat, vegies, a bit of fruit, fats and oils. About 1700- 1800 calories. If I ate low fat yoghurt, pasta, crackers, stuff like that, I would be starving and wouldn't last more than a few days on that calorie level.
  17. Haha, yes, I channel my OCD tendencies into keeping myself safe from CC. Better than the other useless things I tend to do!
  18. I eat low carb paleo, pretty much veges, meat, nuts and some fruit. Very little processed food. I'm experimenting with giving up dairy and so far I'm feeling really good without it (boo!). I do still eat butter. The amount of protein required doesn't really change regardless of what type of diet you eat, so low carb means eating higher fat which is weird...
  19. hahaha we actually have a sign that says "there are no fairies in this kitchen!". Our kitchen is mostly ok, every now and again the dishes pile up but the majority of us are militant about keeping it clean. I wash my bowl, plate and cutlery after use and then keep in my office and I have my own dish brush and use paper towel. Never have any problems. I...
  20. Yes, I saw that you were in a residential college, that bit of my post was more for general info. I can understand why you'd want to be in one, but the time taken to prep meals isn't too much after you get used to it, perhaps you could practice while you're at home? It sounds like you've already shown that you can achieve at university and you've just...
  21. Also, yay about the new country life bread! I saw it and it looked sooooooo much better than the evil old stuff. Good for them. I don't really eat bread but glad there's a good one easily available. I was on teaching prac awhile back and I noticed a child's sandwich disintegrating into a pile of crumbs and thought, yep, that kid's gluten free :-)
  22. Gluten Free Expo in Sydney! Open Original Shared Link Today and tomorrow. Oops late notice
  23. I'm really sorry about the hard time you had :-( With regards to not being able to go back to uni, I gather you were "excluded" (for non-Aussies, this is a term they use when you drop out with fails and without following any of the procedures). That doesn't mean you are excluded for life, you just need to explain when you reapply what went wrong and that...
  24. You poor thing. I hate it too. But your comment about wanting to crawl under your desk made me laugh. One time I was introducing a new employee to everyone and when I got to one girls office she was curled up under her desk! It was both hilarious and super awkward and i felt so bad fot how bad she was feeling. Luckily the new employee was female too and...
