  1. Rudi's Cinnamon Raisin is great. Udi's is decent. I use a lot of corn tortillas but can't stand the brown rice ones.
  2. Mac & Cheese (NYT Well blog recipe, but with ancient harvest pagodas, rice flour, buttermilk and full fat cheese) Cauliflower with parsley Apple
  3. Maybe look into one of the Mindfulness programs? I've heard pretty good things about them for general calming of stress-related symptoms for various things.
  4. Have you been eating out more? I tend to eat out (or prepared/packaged foods) more when busy/stressed, and then the contamination adds up to enough to start symptoms over a few weeks even if any one meal would not affect me.
  5. You can use plain gelatin with something like cranberry juice. (Or, cider, champagne and strawberries, plum puree...)
  6. Sucralose, maybe? Magnesium can also affect GI function... You could also get some juice or something to dilute in water.
  7. There are several reasons to be tested: 1) easier to get MD approval of tests for relatives (less relevant, since it's already in the family) 2) establishing a baseline for tracking improvement 3) getting follow-ups on issues related to malabsorption (i.e. low ferritin, folate deficiency, etc), RD referral, letters for travel or other needs, etc...
  8. smoked salmon roasted sweet potatoes spring rolls quinoa vegetable salad rice balls (onigiri) tofu-based chocolate pudding (make it low sugar, and send it with fruit and/or a salad) Olive oil and vinegar-based tuna salad. I like artichokes or olives, and white onion with herbs.
  9. Lots of liquids and rest seems to be the general consensus. I find that I need to eat a really bland diet (like white rice, broth, applesauce, maybe some cooked carrots or an egg) for a few days if it's bad.
  10. Magnesium is another one that could help as it is involved in regulating sleep. Celiacs (or those with chronic D) often are a bit low in it, but the blood test isn't incredibly reflective of total body nutrient status. Try it for a week (200 to 400 mg) and see if it helps. Shouldn't hurt (although can have a mild laxative effect).
  11. Minted Zucchini Ricotta Tart (on cornmeal based crust... that needs work) Asparagus with White Wine Garlic Sauce Spinach Salad with Chickpeas, Raisins, Pickled Green Beans and Sweet Onion in Mustard Vinaigrette Millet (courtesy of company) White Wine Raspberry Blackberry Ice Cream (homemade) Sugar Cookies
  12. It's also quite possible and even likely that other members of the household (especially if you have other kids) are getting small amounts of gluten on toys, teething rings, passifiers, etc. Baby chews on books, eats a few cheerio crumbs, other kids kiss him after eating crackers or bread...
  13. I reguarly shop at a Stop N Shop close to my neighborhood and just discovered (after 4 years) that they have a natural foods section stashed in a weird spot behind the flowers/deli. Which is where they keep gluten-free stuff. I had just thought they didn't carry anything. On the other hand, that means my grocery bill will likely be higher the weeks that...
  14. May/June 2010, with testing starting in March 2010. Clear symptoms appeared Jan/Feb of 2010 but other issues had been very mildly present. Diagnosed, medically, but sort of fuzzily (i.e. we think... oh, wait, maybe not? but..yes, okay... let's just call it non-celiac gluten sensitivity before you end up underweight). Genetic testing later revealed DQ...

    ARCHIVED Dairy

Acne (I think... hard to tell exactly) and a bit more gas than usual. It used to really cause some abdominal pain, but that has faded with time. Sheep cheese is fine these days, but I wouldn't try mroe than a few tablespoons of ricotta or milk.

    ARCHIVED I'm Scared

You'll find out where you can eat gradually-- it's process, and not always pleasant, but so exciting when it goes well. (Bad example: "gluten-free" kasha fruit bar from bakery last week = slightly sick. Good example: yaki'soba' with rice noodles from pan-asian place = delicious and AWESOME cookies via a fairtrade coffee shop yesterday.) One thing I haven...
  17. It could. Try the diet strictly for a few weeks (at least 3) and see how you feel. Then try eating some plain wheat, barley or rye (like pasta made from flour and water) to see how you feel. If you feel better, but then worse after eating it, then, yes, you likely have issues with gluten. It could also be an anamoly or indicative of a broader leaky...
  18. "intestinal distress" is also a vague phrase that, when preceeded by "severe," gets a broad range of ideas across without too much detailed explanation.
  19. Being gay generally raises your risk of many diseases like colon cancer. Some of them are biologically linked (lesbians = less likely to have babies young, thus more likely to develop breast cancer; gay men = more likely to smoke, more lung cancer) but many are SES-based too. Worse health insurance coverage, lower paying jobs, less likely to have regular...
  20. Okay, someone should do something about the iron levels. Reading the lab values I'm used to seeing, your ferritin should be over 15, give or take. It's basically zero. That'll make you feel like you've been run over by a bus. You're on supplements? Have your values improved at all (or have you not been taking them long enough)? Can you push for IV iron...

    ARCHIVED P90X

I don't know anything specifically about that program (just heard of it for the first time earlier today), but generally, for your average person who works out for fitness and/or to lose a little more weight, the extra bar/smoothie scheme is counter-productive. Adding more processed calories isn't generally helpful nutritionally either as real food is king...
  22. Allcaneat in Brockton/Randolph area Flour in boston/cambridge (but they do use flour and there is potential for CC) I've haven't been to Glutenus Minimus but it's been recommended. And, hey, there's always DIY. Scratch or mix. My grandmother bakes a brilliant 6 egg flourless chocolate cake that's quite fluffy.
  23. The genetics reflect the degree of risk your kids have for developing celiac disease. The reason for testing genetics is so that you can decide to not regularly screen any kids who are negative, or screen kids at higher risk more often. Typically, screening is recommended every three years or if any symptoms appear. But those recommendations vary. Postive...
  24. pubmed is your basic medical search (for recent research articles) pubmedcentral is the above, but only containing full text articles available to the public. google scholar is great. Most of the really interesting research on the progress and development of non-celiac GS and celiac is coming out of Italy. you're entirely correct; research funding...
  25. Carrot sticks Arepa "pizza" with perocino romano, herb-garlic tomato sauce, and cauliflower Gin and tonic (hello, warm weather) Dried apricots and chocolate, maybe, for dessert. or maybe not.
