  1. Get to a doctor! You probably need a strep test. If your insurance allows, you might be able to get to urgent care today.
  2. I was so deficient from years of celiac malabsorption that I had to take a really high-powered "includes everything" supplement to get my mental health to improve. I take EMPowerPlus from Open Original Shared Link and some fish oil.
  3. I really feel for you. I was married to a jerk. Notice that sentence is past-tense. We didn't have children, he refused couples counseling, things were escalating to where my physical safety was questionable, and my only option left was to walk out on him. I left thinking that moving out would get him to take me seriously, only I realized a 1000 lb weight...
  4. I've gotten sick overindulging on dry roasted peanuts. I think they have too much MSG for my poor stomach to handle.
  5. I got confused and replied in the other thread.
  6. Disney is simply amazing for gluten-free. They have lists they will email you, plus if you speak to the manager when you arrive at any of the restaurants in the park they will bend over backwards to make sure you get safe food! I was served burgers on Udi's buns, fries out of dedicated fryers, gluten-free BBQ ribs, and the big smoked turkey drumsticks you...
  7. My staples: Garlic powder oregano thyme dried parsley savory basil Herbs de Provence - a blend I adore celery seeds for soups & stews bay leaves cayenne ground cumin whole peppercorn blend for my grinder mustard powder cinnamon nutmeg cloves, both whole and ground ground ginger vanilla extract I tend to keep...
  8. It's possible there was a Flash ad with a problem.
  9. Exactly! A couple years back I saw a great talk by Markku Mäki, a Finnish celiac expert. He said that while the incidence of celiac is rising in Finland, it's not rising on the Russian side of the peninsula. Everyone has a similar genetic background, but the lifestyle is very different in Russia vs. Finland. People in Russia are poorer, and I think he ...
  10. I was just listening to a story on NPR about how some doctors think vitamin D is good for autoimmunity. I sort of doubt low vitamin D is the source of increasing autoimmunity - I have more personal faith in the "hygeine hypothesis" - but I think most of us folks with celiac should be taking it. This is a great thread to start!

I answered your other post with the ANA. Why don't you go low-iodine as well as gluten-free and see if it the rash goes away?
  12. Ugh. That doesn't sound like fun. Glad to hear your reactions are not dangerous. Mine aren't either. I only put celiac on my bracelet because I was having it done for my serious allergy.
  13. I think your reading has you a little confused, Razzle. ANA is not an inflammatory marker like CRP. ANA is an autoimmune antibody - it stands for anti-nuclear antibody. Celiac doesn't usually cause ANA, but sometimes ANA tests are positive without any specific symptoms associated with them. My mom has ANA but no specific autoimmune disease, for example...
  14. I think there is some confusion between glutamine and gluten. It is a common mistake. There is no suggestion on the website or nutritional labeling that the product contains any sort of gluten.
  15. Do you get sick enough to require hospitalization when you get gluten by mistake or are your symptoms merely uncomfortable? What would happen if you're groggy and given pills to swallow and they contain gluten? We have one board member who gets intusseption and is at risk of intestinal perforation after eating gluten, one who has seizures, and one who...
  16. I was never tested. I have other autoimmunity, I used to have a DH-like rash on my hand, and I have had lifelong problems with wheat. I call myself celiac without being 100% sure because it's easier to get people to understand how profoundly gluten affects my health and well-being.
  17. Interesting. In the US, the switch to vegetable oil and beef flavor was a result of a huge consumer backlash when McDonald's revealed that the fries were being fried in tallow, a saturated fat. They switched to vegetable oil as a result. Something similar happened to movie popcorn popped in coconut oil.
  18. I put it on my medicalert bracelet for my dangerous medication allergy. I don't know that it's a good idea for only celiac and I sort of regret putting it on my bracelet. I'd rather they do whatever treatment is medically necessary even if it glutens me in the process. We have a few on the board who get into really dangerous situations if they are exposed...
  19. What you've posted looks even safer than the US version! US McDonald's fries have been independently tested and come up gluten-free. The trace of wheat in the beef flavoring is used in an intermediate step. What probably bothers people at McDonald's is if the fryer oil is filtered out of order and wheat from McNuggets or other batter fried foods gets...
  20. We get a lot of "I was gluten-light a few weeks before my negative test/biopsy. Does that affect the tests?" There is no answer because our magic crystal balls are broke. You'll go out of your mind wondering if you get a negative!
  21. Yes, many celiacs find eliminating grains helpful. For starters, grain products, especially flours, are most likely to be CC'd with gluten. Even commercial gluten-free breads are only guaranteed to be below 10 ppm, not to have zero gluten. Even a random sample of soy flour in one of Tricia Thompson's studies had 2925 ppm of gluten. Open Original Shared...
  22. Yes, they can be. People with DH have positive bloodwork reasonably often. With DQ1 you can also have very severe non-celiac gluten intolerance, where you get really sick from gluten but none of the tests show anything. You sound more celiac with the DH though.
  23. You don't need to hush. I'm happy to help you and your daughters. I'd ask for total IgA for the younger and repeats of the positive celiac tests. If she's low IgA (not even necessarily deficient) the IgA tests will always come out negative and you have to look at only IgG tests. For TTG, you're kind of stuck comparing to the reference range since you...
  24. You don't need grains to be healthy! I'd recommend reading Loren Cordain's Paleo Diet book. I eat like srall, occasional white rice, potatoes, or sweet potatoes. I feel much better eating very few grains and low-starch.
  25. I missed this. TTG is reported in arbitrary units that can differ wildly between diagnostic labs. Comparing across labs is like trying to compare apples to oranges. You have to compare to the reference range reported by the particular lab, and retesting has to be at the same lab if you want to compare the absolute number. As for your other daughter...
