Yes, it's absolutely possible that a newly trained doctor hasn't seen enough people to understand about varying degrees of sensitivity. Also, cheating on the gluten-free diet is really, really common. People who cheat and try to lie about it are much more common in her office than super-sensitives. You have to be firm with her, explain that you understand...

ARCHIVED Just Got Tested. What Does This Mean?
Skylark replied to Makimonaco1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
We can't interpret any labs without the normal ranges. That looks like a normal total IgA, but if that's the case all it says is that your celiac panel would be valid. -
ARCHIVED Negative Iga Antibodies; Positive Iga - What Does This Mean?
Skylark replied to MichaelandRachel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Did your doctor run total IgA? if you're IgA deficient, which is common in celiacs, the IgA tests don't mean anything. Total IgA can be run gluten-free if you need to go back and have it done. Unfortunately, you would also need TTG IgG, which cannot be run gluten-free. You also need to know whether the gliadin is the old anti-gliadin test or the newer... -
ARCHIVED Considering Doing Gluten Challenge For Biopsy
Skylark replied to carecare's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Here's the reasoning behind 3 months of gluten challenge. I hope you get the answers you're looking for! -
I'm glad you've finally decided to accept the celiac diagnosis. Is this where I get to say "I told you so?" Kidding, of course. It's great news that you're starting to heal! Here's the thing. It doesn't matter a damn what your doctor thinks. The diet does not require a prescription or a doctor's support. What matters is that you get well. If...

ARCHIVED Crap! I Was Gluttened....
Skylark replied to pain*in*my*gut's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't know about your Whole Foods, but at mine employees are very specific that their prepared gluten-free foods are not safe for people with celiac disease. I don't see the point of gluten-free pizza, sandwiches, and salads if they're not celiac-safe but I guess there are enough people who are "gluten lite" that it helps their business. -
As long as you follow all the directions on the package, Benedryl is fine to try for sleep. It's been marketed as Sominex for decades. I find it leaves me drowsy in the morning though. I like to take a little passion flower herb if I have trouble sleeping. It's milder and I'm not aware of any dangers or side effects from it. It only works for a few...

ARCHIVED Anyone Take Years To Heal Brain Fog And Fatigue?
Skylark replied to Twizzel's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Don't give up hope. I get fogged when I'm slightly hypothyroid. Everything else will be fine, my TSH will test OK, but I'll be cloudy and unable to think well. Get me on a bit more thyroid and I'm much better. It did take my mind a year and some high-powered chelated supplements to heal from gluten-caused bipolar. My story is in my profile. -
ARCHIVED Tell Me About "gluten Defense" Pills
Skylark replied to Katrala's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The enzyme in all the so-called gluten pills is DPP-IV. It is NOT one of the enzymes in clinical trials and it will not detoxify gluten. It does not cleave internal di-prolines, which are what cause problems digesting gluten in the first place. DPP-IV only works on prolines at the ends of peptides. These companies are lying, using the FDA dietary supplement... -

ARCHIVED Got Some Of My Bloodwork Back Friday Severe Anemia
Skylark replied to Flasaltwater's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you get better off gluten and it makes you very sick, consider going without a formal diagnosis. I never gluten challenged. Life is too short to lose three months plus recovery time to possibly get a piece of paper telling me what I already know! I hope your iron comes back up and you feel better soon! -
Stormy, I just answered your PM with a pretty big wall of text. Feel free to ask more questions!

ARCHIVED Got Some Of My Bloodwork Back Friday Severe Anemia
Skylark replied to Flasaltwater's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are on the gluten-free diet, right? Or are you trying to get tested for celiac? Idiopathic anemia is one of the hallmarks of celiac disease. -
ARCHIVED I'm Just Really Blue Tonight
Skylark replied to Harpgirl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
That's wonderful news! I'm so glad to hear you two are sorting things out and that you are happier and hubby is supportive of a third child. It's really funny how much better everything works out gluten-free, when you can deal with little stresses, have some energy, and much less anxiety. I had no idea how much it would change my personality and my life... -

ARCHIVED Confused About Being Celiac
Skylark replied to notsosure's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
TTG can be present in other conditions, but anti-endomysial IgA is 100% specific for celiac disease. Lab errors are always possible, but the combination of anti-endomysial and TTG leaves little room for lab error or doubt. -
ARCHIVED Contact Lens Solution
Skylark replied to maitrimama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You going gluten-free is a wonderful show of support! I'm sure she is grateful. Her IBD may improve once you get her off gluten. Sometimes IBD is actually driven by celiac inflammation. I know the diet can seem a little overwhelming at first. I'd recommend you get a big bag of rice, a bag of potatoes, a bunch of fresh fruit and veggies, a carton... -
ARCHIVED Lactose Free, Gluten Free Chocolate?
Skylark replied to New Community Member's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If it's just gluten and lactose you're concerned about, you will find that most dark chocolate is safe for you to eat. Just be sure to check for barley malt, as it shows up in some brands like Lindt. I like Dove dark chocolate sqares, Ghirardelli squares and bars, and Ritter Sport bars. -

ARCHIVED Confused About Being Celiac
Skylark replied to notsosure's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sorry for bad news, but I absolutely think you're celiac. TTG can come up in other autoimmune diseases but endomysial is specific to celiac disease. The combination of both is strong enough that your GI didn't feel the need to biopsy, which is consistent with recent suggestions from researchers. Also, your TTG has come down since you've been gluten-free... -

ARCHIVED Rudi's Bread?
Skylark replied to shadowicewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I absolutely love Rudi's whole grain gluten-free bread. It's my favorite too. Independently certified to <10 ppm is very strict, as good as Udi's and Glutino and better than Bob's Red Mill. If you're reacting to Rudi's consider other ingredients like xanthan gum as well as considering gluten.
