ARCHIVED When Is Enough Enough?
Skylark replied to India's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Gosh, the lamb/pears/white rice did the trick for me. With all the bloating maybe FODMAP is the thing to try. Both your lists have problem foods for fructose malabsorption, the brown rice on one list and pears on the other. If you swap your pears for greens right now and stick to white rice it will tell you pretty quick if it's fructose. You'll... -
Thanks for the kind thoughts. I'm up this morning bloated, queasy, and sneezing with asthma and a runny nose. I had a bunch of bronchitis and asthma trouble this spring and wrote it off to seasonal allergies. I knew I was getting more sensitive to gluten and it looks like the gluten has become an asthma trigger. In a way that's good news. If I'm ultra...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Diet Confusion
Skylark replied to merbear's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There is no such thing as gluten light with bloodwork/biopsy diagnosed celiac disease. The autoimmune reaction happens from even small amounts of gluten even if the damage doesn't cause symptoms. As I mentioned before, autoimmunity tends to be progressive and the silent malabsorption causes anemia, vitamin deficiencies, and often osteoporosis. -

Does she like chicken? A little homemade chicken and rice soup might go down easy and give her a little more sustenance. -
ARCHIVED Misery Loves Company...what Do I Do?

I'm one of the Pepto Bismol people. It really helps with the pain for me. -
I went to a catered party tonight. I had talked to the chef ahead of time, he was an expert in gluten-free, and had set me up a separate gluten-free meal prepared free of CC. Of course it got served to someone else. The head of the catering company was not on-site. The waitress goes to the kitchen, and I am assured the salmon in butter sauce, potatoes...

ARCHIVED Stomach Flu, What Should I Eat When I Eat Again?
Skylark replied to Shelabel's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When I'm feeling hungry again, I have some white rice with a little Herb-Ox bouillon instead of crackers. Remember we can still do BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast) only for us it's shortened to BRA. Feel better! -
What does anger change except making you feel worse about sitting there with your tuna and crackers? All I can manage to feel for these people is pity. Either they're following the next fad diet in search of something they'll never find, or systematically poisoning themselves. My anger is reserved for people who try to feed ME gluten. That's when the...

ARCHIVED Fish Oil ~ Every Day (Multiple Times Even)
Skylark replied to Wheatfreedude's topic in Sports and Fitness
Of course I would bring up the conflict of interest. When a conflict of interest pretty much leaps off a web page and hits me over the head, I feel obliged to point it out. I think the assumption that we are "prepared to thrive on naturally available food sources" is problematic. Remember that "thrive" in paleolithic times meant making it to adulthood... -

Some people around here react to the Chex. Can you get a cereal from a dedicated facility like Glutino? To be honest, I agree with KatieB about avoiding processed foods. Grain products are particularly troublesome, as they are most prone to cross-contamination. Do you have time to cook her natural, whole foods until she's doing a little better? -
ARCHIVED My Blood Test Was Negative
Skylark replied to firefightersgal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You take your car to a mechanic because it's been making a noise. When you start the car up there, it doesn't make the noise and the mechanic doesn't believe you. He hooks the car up to the computer, which doesn't find anything and he laughs at you and says you're imagining things. You get frustrated and leave, deciding not to go back to that garage again... -
ARCHIVED Fish Oil ~ Every Day (Multiple Times Even)
Skylark replied to Wheatfreedude's topic in Sports and Fitness
Notice that Udo has something to sell you, and that he has never published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. Udo speaks of the exact problem Americans have, and the one to which I was referring. Too much dietary n-6 and there is poor conversion to DHA. If you have fixed the ratio of n-6:n-3 in your diet, and are sure you have done so accurately... -
ARCHIVED Worried A New Clinical Manifestation Will Arise
Skylark replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was noticing you were running on the anxious side. Why do you say "aside from therapy"? It sounds like you're living with a little post-traumatic stress. You might find a few sessions of counseling to learn some new thought patterns to be really helpful. I do wonder about your B vitamin status. Low B12, which so many of us have, can make you anxious... -
ARCHIVED My Blood Test Was Negative
Skylark replied to firefightersgal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So you eat something, it makes you sick, and your doctor tells you it's in your head? This is not your problem, but rather your doctor's. No he is not taking you seriously and no he is not hearing what you say at all. Fire him and get a doctor who listens. Remember, you are the consumer and he is providing the service, not the other way around as some... -
ARCHIVED It's Official....i Am Crazy!
Skylark replied to kaki-clam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The 5-HTP may be the source of some of your problems. It's not a bad as SSRIs, but it can push some bipolars into mania. St. John's Wort is another one that manics can't take. I didn't ever find diet to be particularly helpful for mania. Everyone here is piling on asking about hidden gluten but I would be surprised if that's what's going on. Not... -

I have the same opinion. She has so many risk factors and signs of celiac, including DQ2.5. I really hope you find a good doctor and that you don't have to gluten her. -

ARCHIVED Sub-Clinical Gluten Sensitivity? Or Hidden Celiac?
Skylark replied to xpaperbackwriterx's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you feel much better off gluten and have a lot of celiac symptoms, yes you could be celiac. I chose not to gluten myself and I was never tested. My doctors have said if I'm willing to eat a strict celiac diet and assume gluten would do damage, it's OK to not be tested. Even traces of gluten make me sick, so that's fine by me. In the US, there... -
ARCHIVED Lectins - Things Everyone Should Know
Skylark replied to RiceGuy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm completely with you. I have a friend who met D'Adamo and she has absolutely nothing good to say about the man. He is laughing his way to the bank. I do think some folks who have trouble with wheat and are negative for allergy and celiac tests could possibly be reacting to wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) and I've said that in other posts. I really wonder... -
Waitaminute. You are thinking about getting a biopsy so your doctor doesn't think you are a fraud? You are the consumer paying for health care. If your doctor doesn't listen, find another. My current doctor told me that I should not gluten myself for testing. If it makes me sick, he says to avoid it and that's that. He told me the tests are unreliable...

ARCHIVED Brain Fog=Car Accident?!
Skylark replied to missceliac2010's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You've got commiseration from me for sure. My only accident was when a doctor had put me on Imitrex for myofacial pain in my 20s (gluten, of course). It didn't agree with me at all and I was horribly spaced. Just like you, I was in heavy traffic and blanked out for a moment. Fortunately, it was stop-and-go traffic and I was not going fast when I rear... -
ARCHIVED Lectins - Things Everyone Should Know
Skylark replied to RiceGuy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Shroomie, I'm so sorry you read my reply as dismissive. I didn't mean to be dismissive about lectins, but rather that particular article. I know your and other lectin sensitve folks' problems are absolutely real. I was really put off by the tone of the article. Jestgar used the perfect phrase, "scare mongering". I already know lectin biochemistry... -
ARCHIVED It's Official....i Am Crazy!

OMG you poor thing. You sound so much like I felt during my manic episodes. I wouldn't wish that feeling on my worst enemy. I remember the restlessnes, insomnia, tears, up one moment and down the next and so irritated I was ready to just about snap. If you're diagnosed celiac, you have to stay strong and away from gluten. Besides, if you gluten yourself... -
ARCHIVED Could Someone Please Help With My Genetic Tests, Too?
Skylark replied to Gardening's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
She had a high IgG to gluten? In someone with low IgA, that's one of the signs of celiac. The other antibody would be anti-TTG IgG. It's such a shame they didn't get the testing right. My understanding is that there are school situations where a doctors' note is helpful. Perhaps one of your doctors is willing to write what is necessary based on the...
