ARCHIVED Lectins - Things Everyone Should Know
Skylark replied to RiceGuy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is a remarkably biased article. Humans are well-evolved to deal with dietary lectins. Many of them are detoxified by natural intestinal flora. Others have beneficial effects. It is possible that people who are lectin-sensitive have some degree of dysbiosis. Examples of the beneficial effects are that lectins from onion and garlic promote the... -
ARCHIVED Amy's Gluten-Free Shepherd's Pie Is Not Gluten-Free
Skylark replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Amy's voluntarily follows the proposed federal guideline of 20 ppm. Their foods like pot pie and pizza are made in a shared facility. If you're sensitive, you don't want to be eating Amy's. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Just Because You Can't.......
Skylark replied to Aphreal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You let your kids text you to bring them food??? My mother would have grounded me had I done something like that. I ate what was in the house, or I didn't eat. Period. Once I was 16 and could drive and had a job I could have gone out, but I had better things to spend my hard-earned money on than fast food. -
Wow. Just wow. I guess the boards I've run have not been as attractive to spammers as this one because I've never had to deal with anything other than hit-and-runs. I see why you've resorted to munging links. Thank you very much for the tip about spaces.

ARCHIVED Fish Oil ~ Every Day (Multiple Times Even)
Skylark replied to Wheatfreedude's topic in Sports and Fitness
It has been show in multiple studies that humans do not efficiently convert ALA into DHA and EPA. It might be that we would be better off with both fish and flax oil, but your suggestion that ALA from flax oil can replace fish oil is not well substantiated. In particular, you don't get the cardiac benefits of fish oil. If you are not comfortable eating... -
Really? I can see that from unscrupulous, smaller companies but I'm really surprised that Amazon would do that. If it's bots spamming, there are plenty of things that can be done to stop them. Open Original Shared Link If it is a human, obviously you would disable the account that spammed and the moderation queue would catch posts on resubscription...

ARCHIVED Can A Biopsy Give False Negative?
Skylark replied to Aphreal's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Did she have a celiac blood panel too? If everything comes up negative you can still try the diet. It can be difficult to get the celiac tests to come up positive and there are plenty of people who get sick with non-celiac gluten sensitivity. -
Hi, Rae and welcome I'm so glad you found a place to rant. You can come here all you need. I agree with everyone telling you to go to a counselor or nurse, or find a helpful adult. You probably need celiac testing, which does require you to eat about 4 slices of bread worth of gluten daily for 4-6 weeks. (Yes, ugh. I know.) If you can get a positive...

Hi and welcome. If Wheatfreedude doesn't catch this thread, you might PM him. He's a gluten-free bodybuilder who might be able to help with muscle gain ideas. He had a recent post recommending hard boiled eggs for easy, cheap gluten-free protein. You totally don't need a second job for gluten-free foods. Just stay away from all the overpriced specialty...

I spent like a half hour finding a soy-free fish oil for someone. (I wanted to see if I could do it. ) I gleefully posted the link, only to have the spam filter clobber it. I had to "work around" the spam filter by searching for the same product other places. I strongly prefer to post a link since not everyone is comfortable with search...

OK. This spam filter has gone too far. Finally found one that works. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Fish Oil ~ Every Day (Multiple Times Even)

I took that as a challenge. Here is a soy-free fish oil preserved with rosemary rather than tocopherol. Open Original Shared Link Advertisement.com/Nature-s-Answer-Liquid-Omega-3-Deep-Sea-Fish-Oil-EPA-DHA-Natural-Orange-Flavor-16-fl-oz-480-ml/7908?at=0 -
ARCHIVED For Those With Hypothyroidism
Skylark replied to kimis's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Actually, my Hashi's antibodies came up after I'd been gluten-free for a while so it's not true for everyone. I wish it were. Recovering from thyroid malfunction depends on the cause. If it's Graves' or autoimmune it often does not resolve from gluten-free diet. If it's from iodine deficiency it can. -
All is fine, but go easy on the blueberries. I really hope you've figured out something that helps.

Actually, the authors of Seeds of Deception have played fast and loose with the science. Bacteria in human guts have NOT been demonstrated to express the bits of transgene they assmilate and do NOT grow on Roundup agar as these people assert. I read the entire 2004 Nature Biotechnology article where they claim they got the information and it says no such...

ARCHIVED New!
Skylark replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, and welcome. It took a couple months for my GI system to settle down. Longer for the mental/emotional problems from gluten to go away. I don't get sinus trouble, but gluten will give me asthma problems sometimes. The inflammation it causes seems to go through my whole body. -
Have you considered counseling? Sometimes a professional can help you understand the issues behind self-destructive behavior. I imagine there are other self-destructive patterns in your life if you're eating gluten on purpose and life is so much easier when you don't stand in your own way.

ARCHIVED gluten-free Diet Confusion
Skylark replied to merbear's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gluten IS on oats, unless they are grown and harvested super-carefully. Wheat sprouts in oat fields all the time, and the grains are virtually identical and cannot be separated. Even with certified gluten-free oats, 10-15% of celiacs don't tolerate them. The medical recommendation is that celiacs who eat oats should go back for another biopsy once they... -
Mom has fructose malapsorption. I can tell you how she was eating when she came to visit last. She eats eggs and sausage or ham for breakfast. Mom eats corn so we were having grits and corn bread, but maybe you could eat Cream of Rice. You also might be able to make yourself bread from tapioca starch or white rice flour. Mom says that brown rice has...

ARCHIVED Could Someone Please Help With My Genetic Tests, Too?
Skylark replied to Gardening's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You're welcome for the help. That was flat-out malpractice from the nutritionist. If someone referred you to that nutritionist, they should be made aware of it. Of course her tests are normal if she's IgA deficient. And no, she won't show much fecal IgA either so I agree the 22 on Enterolab is interesting. IgA deficiency is another risk factor... -
ARCHIVED Celiac?
Skylark replied to dragon's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It does tend to run in families, but not strictly so. Also, there may be undiagnosed celiacs in your family. My grandmother always stopped eating wheat and switched to cornbread when she got sick, and my great-grandmother had nutritional deficiencies that were never explained. -
ARCHIVED Could Someone Please Help With My Genetic Tests, Too?
Skylark replied to Gardening's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As you note, the genes and TTG are not tracking in your family. HLA-DQ simply isn't the whole story with celiac. The way HLA-DQ works, you make all your alpha and beta chains in all combinations. Only 1/4 of your own HLA-DQ molecules might be DQ2.5. We don't know what your alpha chains actually are but you're reasonably likely to be DQ6.3 and DQ2.5.... -
I feel sorry for people who are biopsy positive celiac and cling to their old diets for whatever reason. It's the same way I feel sorry for smokers who have deluded themselves that smoking will not give them cancer or emphysema. I wish there were a way to educate these people, so they know the risk of what they do. It would be awful to have a celiac...

The really interesting thing is that the human/software does really well in CASP. The protein folding problem is a fascinating one, as is docking. The biophysics in the computer models just aren't accurate enough yet and human-assisted docking and folding do better in CAPRI and CASP than the purely computational models.

ARCHIVED Reaction To Danone Yogurt
Skylark replied to mommyto3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Stick to Yoplait. Dannon does not guarantee their yogurts are gluten-free, while Yoplait does.
