ARCHIVED New At Gluten Free
Skylark replied to rsupergirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What brand of corn tortillas? Mission are made on dedicated lines, but not all brands are. If your corn tortillas were made on equipment that also makes flour ones, that could be a source of CC. -
ARCHIVED Could Someone Please Help With My Genetic Tests, Too?
Skylark replied to Gardening's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Enterolab took me a while to figure out too. The serologic equivalent Enterolab is talking about is from old blood tests, not genetic tests. It used to be that we couldn't tell that there was more than one gene for DQ1 tissue typing. Once the HLA-DQ gene testing was invented, all the various genes that give a DQ1 reaction in organ transplant tests were... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Diet Confusion
Skylark replied to merbear's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the board. I understand why you're worried. Unfortunately, there is no firm answer. Studies have been done and celiacs differ in their levels of intolerance to trace gluten. Doing as your doctor suggested and only avoiding obvious wheat is NOT going to let you heal. Do remember that your doctor can do a followup biopsy and double-check that... -
Sorry you got into wheat. Must be awful to break out on top of feeling crummy. Like K8ling says, DH is celiac no matter what your blood test says. Also, a dermatologist can biopsy next to an outbreak of you want a firmer diagnosis.

ARCHIVED New Here - Gi For Sure... Is Celiac Diagnosis Required?
Skylark replied to GirlScout's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi. I'm self-diagnosed too. My doctor at the time offered tests, but explained I'd have to eat a "normal" amount of wheat for at least a month. I ate one sandwich, got sick, and decided it wasn't worth it. Right now, there is no real advantage to having the diagnosis, as there are no medicines on the market and the only treatment is a gluten-free diet... -
ARCHIVED My Genetic Test...
Skylark replied to Simona19's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Not Raven, but I have the link to the big population study Prometheus did. They did find some non-DQ2 and DQ8 celiacs in their 10,000 person cohort. Open Original Shared Link Simona, I agree with everyone here. The canker sores, hypothyroidism and Marsh I biopsy are all consistent with celiac, especially since the canker sores went away and you're... -
ARCHIVED Roasted Chicken From The Grocery Store... Sigh...

I do well with the Whole Foods chickens too. -
ARCHIVED New, Husband's Enterolab Results
Skylark replied to chemom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have never seen anything like that. Where did you read it? To be honest it doesn't make much sense to me, as the enzymes that digest gluten are the same for veggies and other grains. People go on and off foods all the time. Human diets used to be seasonal, remember? -
I'm with GlutenFreeManna. GMO is unacceptable when the gene comes from an entirely different organism and is introduced into the crop plant using plasmids. Hybridization and breeding works with a fairly limited palette of genes, even though the organisms can end up looking quite different. Pollen from the Last Supper wheat could probably pollenate modern...

ARCHIVED 2Nd Opinion Of My Tests
Skylark replied to Smarts's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, my. Your GI seems to have an odd agenda. I'm so glad you're able to work with your GP now. -
ARCHIVED "But You Can Eat Whole Wheat, Right?"
Skylark replied to earthtoneNJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If it's "cooked" and has changed texture, it's denatured. Your friend with the Ph.D. probably has a true allergy. Either that or she has not done her reading on celiac. In true allergy, the immune system tends to recognize the surfaces of folded proteins. Heat can sometimes change the shape of an allergen through denaturation (unfolding) or aggregation... -
I did some reading on GM food. I think we're part of a 300 million person experiment and I want to know where my informed consent form was and how I withdraw from the study. Supposedly in the US food labeled "100% organic" is not GMO. I don't know if any testing is done to verify that but I've switched to organic corn chips and tempeh since I did...

A beta blocker partly blocks the effect of adrenaline and lowers the amount of sympathetic nervous system activity in your body. By doing so it lowers blood pressure and can lower heart rate a little. It blocks part of the "fight or flight" signals. Propanolol is particularly effective lowering blood pressure and slowing heartbeat in people who have increases...

ARCHIVED I Lost My Favorite Kitty Today
Skylark replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm so sorry for your loss. Sometimes it's hard being the longer-lived of a special partnership with pets. It sounds like she had a wonderful life with you and I'm sure you already miss her companionship. -
ARCHIVED New - Daughter's Enterolab Results
Skylark replied to chemom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Isn't the DQ7 beta chain strongly linked to the 05* alpha so you can get trans-DQ2.5? But there are celiacs with DQ5, DQ6, and DQ9 around here as well. If you look at risk, people who are one of the DQ1 or DQ3 subtypes have very similar risks of other GI diseases as well as celiac, and anti-gliadin antibodies can occasionally come up positive in things... -
I just finally got the Jefferson Airplane reference in the title. You're so funny, Connie!

ARCHIVED New - Daughter's Enterolab Results
Skylark replied to chemom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oooohhhhh. I didn't think about that. Dang it, I'm not as foggy today but obviously I'm on the irritable side. I'm having yeast problems after an antibiotic and I think it's affecting my whole body. I avoid antibiotics but this particular one was very necessary. -
Well, I think a little round of HRT is a great idea. You might also really like the Inderal. When you get anxious, it will block physical effects of panic like the sharp rise in blood pressure and pounding heart feeling. It might help with the dizziness too. It's an old, safe drug and well worth a shot. Remember you can always go off it if it doesn't...

ARCHIVED Need To Re-Gluten My 2Yo For Panel - Please Guide Me
Skylark replied to Gardening's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, she needs to go to a GI. I wish Enterolab tested for anti-endomysial antibodies rather than just anti-TTG. Anti-TTG can show up in all the inflammatory bowel diseases, like microscopic colitis and Crohn's, while fecal anti-EMA is specific for celiac. She does have a pretty high anti-gliadin IgA and DQ2 which is more suggestive of celiac. Most... -
ARCHIVED How Is Celiac Related To Anxiety?
Skylark replied to Zeb's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I haven't seen any convincing research as far as mechanism for the anxiety connection. Vitamin deficiency plays a role in some people, especially B12. Outside of that, all the autoimmune disorders seem to generate some degree of anxiety, fatigue, and depression. Increased anxiety has been demonstrated with lupus, Sjogren's, rheumatoid arthritis, and celiac... -
ARCHIVED Celiac?
Skylark replied to dragon's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac is one of the major causes of anemia. Your doctor is probably seeing celiac-like symptoms and doesn't trust your negative test results so he wants to look again. It's hard to get solid, positive test results for celiac. -

I wish I could be "me" and not Skylark and Facebook friend some of you. You can't be talking about bipolar on the Internet without being anonymous. Too many people Google your name for job searches. I'll just have to stay friends with people around here.

ARCHIVED Hummus- Will Homemade Hurt?
Skylark replied to lvpriest's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you need help with labels, there is a list of gluten ingredients here. /celiac-disease/forbidden-gluten-food-list-unsafe-ingredients-r182/ Tahini is usually safe. Check the chili powder as well. As far as the aubergines, it depends what's in them and whether you are personally sensitive to distilled vinegar.
