ARCHIVED Entero Lab Question
Skylark replied to siglfritsch's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've been trying so hard to leave the Enterolab thing alone, but it keeps coming up and every time people talk about it I'm angry at Dr. Fine all over again for misrepresenting and overinterpreting the test results he offers. I find the whole thing genuinely upsetting as I feel like I'm looking at a scam and I'm the kind of person who hates to see sick,... -
ARCHIVED Entero Lab Question
Skylark replied to siglfritsch's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's the whole problem. Fecal anti-tTG is a marker for Crohns and inflammatory bowel disease as well as celiac. The specific marker for celiac is fecal anti-endomysial antibodies. It is irresponsible and dangerous to diagnose celiac without testing for anti-EMA or ruling out inflammatory bowel disease with other tests or a scope. Open Original Shared... -
Have you tried going off milk? I keep asking this of people who are not responding well to a gluten-free diet because I ran across these studies where there are some celiacs whose antibodies cross-react to both gluten and casein. The researchers conclude that casein could trigger celiac damage in these people. Here are the studies. Open Original Shared...

ARCHIVED Olive Oil Vs. Vegetable Oil
Skylark replied to Cynbd's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've always cooked with olive oil as much as possible. I don't even have soybean or canola oil around the kitchen any more. I have experimented with virgin coconut oil in cooking and baking. I can usually taste it, so I use it if I want the trace of coconut flavor. I tend to like it in sweet baked goods. In breads it depends on my mood and what else... -
ARCHIVED Celiac?
Skylark replied to hercules25's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Has your doctor run a celiac panel? There are people with gluten intolerance who do not have positive tests for celiac disease. Also going off gluten seems to help some people with other bowel problems. There is also a gluten-free, lactose-free diet called the "Specific Carbohydrate Diet" (SCD) that some people around here swear by. Once you have the... -
ARCHIVED Got My Enterolab Results Today
Skylark replied to danaf617's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are DQ2 and DQ5. As far as I know DQ5 isn't associated with any diseases. Enterolab explains what they mean by "subtype" on this page. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Deamidated Gliadin Positive, Gene Negative
Skylark replied to Matisse's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Did I massacre my explanation too badly? I haven't looked at LOD scores and linkage analysis for years. -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Accuracy
Skylark replied to angiegoo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A LOT of people with anti-tTG antibodies find that some subtle health problems go away when they don't consume gluten whether or not the biopsy is positive. The connection between gluten intolerance and celiac is unclear. People like you with anti-tTG are probably in an early stage of celiac disease even if the biopsy is normal. There are other people... -
ARCHIVED Got My Enterolab Results Today
Skylark replied to danaf617's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are DQ7 and DQ6. The bit that says "Subtype 7,6" on the Enterolab report is where you read it. Don't get too hung up on the genetics. HLA-DQ genetics only give you an idea of relative risk. You have a relatively low risk for celiac, but there are plenty of folks around this board who have gluten intolerance with all different genotypes. -
ARCHIVED Imitation Crab Meat
Skylark replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have never seen a brand that didn't have a lot of gluten. Fake crab meat is mostly fish and flavoring stuck together with gluten. -
ARCHIVED Deamidated Gliadin Positive, Gene Negative
Skylark replied to Matisse's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Genetics class was about six years ago and I'm not a geneticist. LOL! Basically, a geneticist first has to identify a fairly large region of chromosome, which is what the studies are doing. They use markers called SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) that have a known location in the genome and are easy to sequence. SNPs do not necessarily belong to... -
ARCHIVED Deamidated Gliadin Positive, Gene Negative
Skylark replied to Matisse's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The amount of deamidated gliadin peptide antibody falling with your gluten-free diet suggests that you are celiac. If the antibody were happenstance, why would it fall? Besides, HLA-DQ is absolutely not the full genetic story. These studies have gone after non-HLA genes and found at least three other interesting loci. Open Original Shared Link Open... -
ARCHIVED Got My Enterolab Results Today
Skylark replied to danaf617's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
At this point, you have gotten plenty of medical care and ruled out the inflammatory bowel conditions. Has your doctor also ruled out SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)? With all the negative celiac tests and your genetics, you are not likely to have a positive biopsy. I doubt your doctor will be inclined to put you through it. You can still... -

ARCHIVED gluten-free Chicken Or Veggie Broth/cubes Canada
Skylark replied to kaiess's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Is Herb-Ox brand available in Canada? Their beef, chicken, vegetable, and garlic chicken granules and cubes are gluten-free. I use the Herb-Ox chicken cubes all the time. Open Original Shared Link -
Immediate tongue stinging is more typical of a classic allergy than gluten. You can be allergic to the cooked or the uncooked version of a food and not always both. Do keep an eye on the mushrooms. (Poor Shroomie. She's getting a bad rap today!)

ARCHIVED Should I Now Try To Get My Mom To Do The Enterolab Test?
Skylark replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Here's the thing with the genetics. There are multiple loci linked to celiac disease, not just HLA-DQ. Lack of DQ2 or DQ8 does NOT rule out celiac, let alone gluten intolerance which isn't even studied much. If your Mom has a lot of GI issues, first you need to be sure her doctor has ruled out other inflammatory bowel diseases. Then, if you order Enterolab... -
ARCHIVED Nature Valley Roasted Nut Crunch
Skylark replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
To elaborate a little, oats are often crop rotated with wheat. A few wheat plants will grow in the oat fields and since the plants and grains are so similar, wheat grains end up mixed in with most commercial oats. Gluten-free oats are grown in fields where wheat is never planted. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Have Other Auto Immune

I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis as well. -
That sounds very frustrating. I hope your doctor has some insight. If your insurance covers it, maybe he can refer you to a dietitian to make sure there is nothing you're overlooking. You also might ask about the possibility of casein (milk protein) sensitivity. Some celiacs to milk as if it were gluten. The other thing that comes to mind is that most...

ARCHIVED Lay's Wavy Potato Chips
Skylark replied to Skylark's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks. I honestly don't know about super-sensitive. Usually I can eat foods most other people on the board can eat, so it's good to know there aren't usually issues with normal Lay's. My symptoms were so general yesterday for all I know it could just as easily be a mild GI virus as gluten CC. I'm not getting any strong "gluten" symptoms like canker sores... -
ARCHIVED Lay's Wavy Potato Chips
Skylark posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Has anyone had trouble with Lay's Wavy potato chips? I couldn't find Stax at the store and got a bag of the plain chips. All that's on the label is potatoes, oil, and salt. I've had a rumbling stomach and a little D out of nowhere and realized I've eaten a serving of them every day since I bought them a few days back. I'm not eating anything else new or... -
ARCHIVED Just Hear Me Out, K?
Skylark replied to conniebky's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Connie, I had full-on bipolar illness from all the awful things gluten did to my body and brain. Trust me, a bowl of macaroni can totally make you go mental! Nowadays I get these weird mini-panic attacks now when I eat gluten by mistake. I'll be sitting in my chair working on something, and suddenly out of nowhere I feel this adrenaline rush, my... -
ARCHIVED Monosodium Glutamate?
Skylark replied to texasgirl19's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Monosodium glutamate is not gluten. I'm not sure why the words are similar. It definitely does give some people headaches.
