ARCHIVED All Tests Were Negative, But I Can't Eat Gluten
Skylark replied to Kay DH's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Telling a doctor you have a Ph.D. in a biomedical field can be an unexpected health risk. The good news is that we have the training to sort through the medical literature and figure things out ourselves. -
Enterolab provides no information at all on the sensitivity and specificity of their tests and their interpretation is not in line with the scientific literature. Fosamax and other bisphosphonates are not contraindicated for celiac disease; however, you should be aware of a pretty nasty side effect. In some people, bisphosphonates can cause serious damage...

Thanks for sharing that. It's great to know of places that will try to accommodate us for when I'm traveling.

ARCHIVED Sweets
Skylark replied to conniebky's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love the Glutino cookies! I found some that taste just like Oreos. The Betty Crocker gluten free mixes are great and you get a little more for your money. Get your mom to bake your cake from one of those. I love the Devil's Food. Rice Krispies do have barley malt in them. You're lucky since without being celiac it's really down to what you... -
ARCHIVED All Tests Were Negative, But I Can't Eat Gluten
Skylark replied to Kay DH's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm a scientist too and I totally understand that one! I also self-diagnosed with a pretty thorough elimination diet. The physician's assistant I was stuck with in managed care was totally useless. I didn't know much about celiac, and by the time I learned enough from an actual doctor to know that the blood tests require gluten, I was four months gluten... -
ARCHIVED Amy's Rice Crust Pizza
Skylark replied to Heather's Mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Amy's is testing and keeping their gluten-free pizza below 20 ppm level. This is OK for most folks but not everyone. Open Original Shared Link If you think she's reacting, try going to a different brand like Glutino. They make both pizza crusts and small gluten-free frozen pizzas. Glutino makes all their products in a dedicated facility, they stay... -
ARCHIVED Casein Intolerance Or Glutening?
Skylark replied to Tigercat17's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your diet would work for me and I'm pretty sensitive. Have you made sure Boost is completely gluten-free? Yes, you can have negative blood work and still be intolerant to a food. The only way to tell for sure is to remove it from your diet for a while. Some celiacs are cross-sensitive to casein and it does cause the autoimmune damage in those few people... -
ARCHIVED Need Advice With Thyroid Problems
Skylark replied to mygfworld's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I read something in another thread about timed release T3. Does anyone have any info on it? -
ARCHIVED Total And Complete Exhaustion
Skylark replied to snow white's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That sounds awful. I remember being that tired when I was eating gluten. Have you had your thyroid checked? Also Epstein-Barr virus will do that. I have a friend whose fiance had it and she was knocked out for weeks. Some folks around here swear by sublingual B12 too. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Reaction From Brown Rice?
Skylark replied to Cleangreen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, you know your body better than I do! I wonder if you are sensitive to lectins? Soy, grains, legumes and nightshades contain the most, and some people think lectins cows eat can make it into the milk. -
ARCHIVED 3 Years Dx'd And Still Feel Like Crap! Please Help!1
Skylark replied to Joni63's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Oh, Joni. That's your low thyroid. I feel so bad for you because mine is out of whack the past few weeks and I've been feeling exactly the same way. As well as the fatigue, hypothyroidism causes depression and lots of other problems. Cold hands, dry hair and skin, weight gain, sluggish metabolism. Many people with celiac end up hypothyroid and yes... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free, Still Gaining Weight, Still Bloated
Skylark replied to LisaGF's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I didn't expect you to agree with the dietary conclusions. What I found so valuable is his story of the interplay between politics, capitalism, reductionist science, media, and the American diet. My grandparents lived into their 90s in good health eating "mostly plants" so it seems sound enough advice for my own genetic background. -
ARCHIVED So Disappointed With Medical Profession Right Now...
Skylark replied to Marz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you've ruled out the inflammatory bowel diseases and plan to eat gluten-free for life, there isn't a lot of point to celiac testing unless your symptoms return. If you're acting as if you're celiac, watching for thyroid disease and the rare lymphocytic cancers, there is no functional difference in having a diagnosis. Neither of the two good docs I... -
ARCHIVED Toddler's Nerve Pain Possibly Gluten-Related?
Skylark replied to ellie10's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is really good advice. You do need to be sure there isn't anything else going on. There are definitely gluten-related nerve problems, including ataxia (a coordination problem), and peripheral neuropathy like you're describing. There are no tests for them, other than simple anti-gliadin IgA. Kids often don't show results on tests though. I'm not... -
ARCHIVED Something Really Scary Has Happened
Skylark replied to masterjen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for the update. That sounds really hard, especially the hospital stay. I'm glad you found some meds that get the seizures under control and I hope you get the rest of the health issues sorted out. -
LEAP testing has received a lot of criticism from the medical community for inaccuracy and lack of validation. Allergists pretty much agree that the only way to be sure of a non-dangerous food allergy is with an elimination diet, as GlutenFreeManna has described. Obviously you wouldn't do that with a dangerous allergy like peanuts.

You want to see a personality shift, try recovering from bipolar illness. My family likes me MUCH better now.

ARCHIVED Gluten Reaction From Brown Rice?
Skylark replied to Cleangreen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That sounds more like reactive hypoglycemia than a gluten reaction, especially if it happens with all grains and carbs. -
That does sound miserable. Have you talked to your doctor? Standard allergy testing might be able to help you sort out what's causing the hives. I get allergic rashes from certain plants and pollens and sometimes break out when I'm doing yard work. I put some Benedryl cream on and then take a dose of Benedryl at night. It makes me a little groggy the...

ARCHIVED Is It All In My Head?
Skylark replied to torimuse's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Gluten sensitivity/celiac can be triggered by the immune system activity that comes with a severe illness. If you feel that much better after going off gluten, you already know the answer. You health problems could absolutely be caused by gluten sensitivity and going onto a gluten-free diet is the right thing to do. Frankly, your doctor is giving terrible... -
ARCHIVED Coffee? Are You Kidding Me?
Skylark replied to conniebky's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If it went through a grinder with a gluten-containing flavored coffee maybe it is CC'd. Peet's says all their coffees are gluten-free. Maybe try some Peet's to avoid the confusion of cross-contamination from the grinders. (It's good coffee too!) A lot of people seem to react more strongly to small amount of gluten CC after being gluten-free for a while... -
ARCHIVED Need Help With Blood Test
Skylark replied to Neal77's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So these are tests after a month and a half gluten-free? That makes them a little hard to interpret. Tests fall the longer you're off gluten, and some people look normal after a few months. The anti-gliadin IgA means your body does have some reaction to gluten, but doctors won't usually diagnose celiac from that result alone. People can have anti-gliadin... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Better By The Day
Skylark replied to txplowgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You sound like me. My psychiatrist friend says I have a "broken picker-outer". I'm much happier single. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free, Still Gaining Weight, Still Bloated
Skylark replied to LisaGF's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is a spectacularly good article on how the current reductionist view of food and nutrition came about. In particular, it explains how the beef lobby deep-sixed McGovern's 1977 nutrition report and how manufacturers and reductionist science have been warping the public view about food nutrition ever since. Open Original Shared Link The author's... -
ARCHIVED Food From Bulk Bins
Skylark replied to lyndsayrose's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Beans are so cheap do you really need to buy them from the bulk bins and worry about how well you rinse off the gluten? I buy them in bags at regular grocery stores for a dollar or two. I think the last bag of lentils I got was 98 cents. Plain canned beans are fine too. I don't know about your stores, but around here you can get containers of pre-weighed...
