  1. Thanks for the reply. Spammers are so annoying. I tried to get the direct Townsend Letter link but their website is a mess to navigate and I couldn't find it quickly. It was a good article too. Hopefully it won't be an issue again.
  2. Thyroid shouldn't go from normal to abnormal because of a gluten-free diet. The reverse does happen, where low thyroid becomes closer to normal as more iodine is absorbed and autoimmunity decreases. Has your dietitian addressed the possibility of other food intolerances or hypoglycemia? It could also be a matter of a little more time off gluten. My...
  3. Maybe it was a bad container and you got plain old food poisoned.
  4. The new Betty Crocker gluten-free mixes are really good. My fave is the Devil's Food cake. Pamela's gluten-free brownie mix makes good brownies too. I also just discovered the Glutino "oreos" called Dream Cookies. Nom, nom. And then there are the Glutino Sugar Wafers, Breyer's ice cream, H
  5. Sometimes I wish I had challenged, but I self-diagnosed with a lamb-rice-pears elimination because the PA I mostly saw in student health was of no use. By the time I got to a decent doctor in student health with a clue about celiac disease, I had been gluten-free for 5 or 6 months like you. We agreed that my doing a gluten challenge on top of graduate school...
  6. I'm not sure I understand why you didn't suggest another restaurant. Obviously you don't want to go into details about your health but "I have food allergies and tend to get sick at Japanese restaurants. Can we eat at restaurant X down the street, please?" should be fine. I actually seek out good Japanese restaurants with sushi bars when I travel. I find...
  7. Fish oil performs better than flax seed oil in cholesterol and cardiovascular health studies. This is because fish oil has the EPA and DHA, whereas flax seed has a precursor that your body may not convert to EPA or DHA efficiently depending on the amount of omega-6 in your diet. Flax seed rather rather than oil has worked to lower cholesterol and improve...
  8. That's totally different from buffets here. I'd not worry either if all the dishes were covered with their own spoons and all. How nice that you have that!
  9. Wild. I'm on the same timeline, having to suddenly pay attention to shared lines and trace gluten after 5 years gluten-free. I wasn't as sick as you, but gluten intolerant enough that I laughed at my doctor when he suggested I do a month-long wheat challenge for blood work and a clear diagnosis. When you read the clinical studies, most celiacs don...
  10. I have had too many bad experiences with waiters. There is no possible way to ask all the right questions, and even if you do they will make stuff up. I called one restaurant where I was meeting friends for lunch and they said they could handle gluten-free. I spoke to the waitress and ordered carefully. Even with all that work, I was served a salad with...
  11. Are you eating other things made from milk without trouble? There isn't lactose in Coffee-Mate but it does have casein.
  12. Thanks for all the info! I'll check out nutsonline and print out the Trader Joe's lists. I might have figured out the Planters. Dried yeast is an ingredient in the dry roasting flavor and yeast is on a lot of celiac "don't eat" lists unless because the culture medium can contain wheat. If that's yet another urban legend there's still MSG to wonder...
  13. Thanks Peter. I was trying to figure out why I couldn't find any real information about flour or starch on production lines. It's hard to separate urban myths sometimes. I was wondering about gluten because I just can't make sense of the reaction otherwise. I've eaten nuts all my life with no signs of allergy or sensitivity. The Nature Valley nut bars...
  14. You learn the ins and outs of it, and yes it gets much easier. You'll also feel better, which gives you more energy and makes EVERYTHING seem easier.
  15. Me too. Everyone understands allergies. Then I suggest a restaurant like Outback or PF Chang, or a favorite sushi joint where I can eat without appearing too high-maintenance. No guy wants to make his date sick.
  16. Take a deep breath. Relax. You have gone way overboard and this degree of obsession is only hurting you. You need to talk to a nutritionist and probably a counselor. You also need to re-engage your common sense. It will help. You can kiss your husband; just don't kiss him while he's drinking a beer. If he had something with gluten, you might...
  17. Yep. I'm concerned. mTG-treated corn looks to be a problem for celiacs, and they caught it in small studies. Udi's does not contain corn, but these studies are too small to conclude that cross-linked rice is reliably safe. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link I don't see anything about cross-reactivity of denatured mTG with anti-tTG...
  18. I try not to be hard on myself when I slip up, with gluten or anything else in life. The important thing is to learn from your mistakes, not beat yourself up over them! As for beer can chicken, I wouldn't. The beer must be flavoring the chicken or it wouldn't be in the recipe. That means there is a little barley gluten getting on the chicken.
  19. Ah, buffet roulette. I've seen people pick up a serving spoon and serve themselves from two or three dishes before replacing it. A scoop of mac and cheese, and then a scoop of that rice you thought was safe with the same spoon. Then a scoop of gravy from the back of the table that they manage to drip on everything else on the way to the plate .
  20. It is not a scientific journal and it is not peer reviewed. It is described on the celiac.com website as a newsletter.
  21. I know how hard it is to "come out". Glad you decided to post. This has a chance of being environmental. Have you checked the home for toxic molds, or is it a new house with a lot of formaldehyde leaching from paint, wallboard, etc.?
  22. I had it down after a few months. A subscription to the Clan Thompson software really helped me learn. After five years of eating gluten-free I've become much more sensitive (or maybe my health has improved to the point that I notice a glutening more) and am having to learn all over again. Suddenly the "may be manufactured on equipment used to process...
  23. I've gotten really confused about nuts. I'm pretty sure I'm not allergic/intolerant to tree nuts or peanuts. I can eat Larabars, Kind bars, gluten-free baked goods and mixes with nuts, peanut butter, and Blue Diamond almonds all I like. When I buy containers of mixed nuts or cashews at Costco or the grocery store though, I sometimes get run-down and...
  24. I do OK with Irish and Scottish single malts too, and I've gotten pretty sensitive lately. I wonder whether occasional issues with whiskey are from the casks. Wikipedia says that while sherry casks are preferred and old bourbon casks are common, red wine and even beer casks can be used. There's an old discussion on here about flour paste being used to...
  25. I had no idea coffee beans could be CC. Seems like gluten is everywhere. For flavored coffee, you can put some stick cinnamon in with the grounds, or add a drop of vanilla extract with the cream and sugar. Hershey's syrup is really good too if you don't mind the sugar. Frangelico liqueur is amazing in coffee, but I only do that on weekends when I...
