ARCHIVED Soy Lecithin...?
Skylark replied to Cujy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are links to safe and unsafe ingredients at Open Original Shared Link Here is the safe list, and as you can see soy lecithin is on it. https://www.celiac.com/articles/181/1/Safe-Gluten-Free-Food-List-Safe-Ingredients/Page1.html This is the UNSAFE list so you know what to look out for. To be honest I find it easier to mostly avoid processed foods... -
ARCHIVED Kaiser Permanente Ttg Iga
Skylark replied to jnh380's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There is no "typical" TTG IgA test. The results are given in arbitrary units and you have to interpret them by comparing to the provided reference range. Your test is clearly positive and you are very likely celiac. Good luck with the biopsy! -
ARCHIVED Help Interpreting Test Results - Neg. But Still Not Sure
Skylark replied to hamiam's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi and welcome. Notice that it's not 100%. The other 3% of celiac patients do not have a so-called celiac gene. You can also get very sick from non-celiac gluten intolerance. It seems a little unusual for DH to go away that fast. Mine took about 3 years off gluten to get to where I never had itching. -
ARCHIVED Is The Frequency Of My Reaction Normal?
Skylark replied to Flav's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My GI symptoms from gluten came and went for a couple weeks when I first went gluten-free. It took a year to actually get all my gluten-caused nutritional and psych problems settled down. You might keep an eye on dairy and soy. I was intolerant to gluten, dairy, and soy when I first started the diet. The soy intolerance resolved, the dairy comes and... -
ARCHIVED Need On-The-Go Breakfast Ideas
Skylark replied to BeFree's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I like almond flour muffins and I'll often add banana or squash. They have a lot more protein than gluten-free muffins made from grains so they make a pretty complete breakfast. -
ARCHIVED Just Tested
Skylark replied to banjos's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The weak positive is still likely an indicator of celiac disease. I misspoke earlier because I missed that the test was DGP-IgA rather than IgG. The specificity on that one is not as high as some of the other tests unless you are IgA deficient. Are you? If you have normal total IgA the specificity is more like 85%. As I said, if you decline the endoscopy... -
ARCHIVED Overnight Camp For Newly Diagnosed 12 Year Old
Skylark replied to Glutenfree4her's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's only an overnight. Don't take her away from a special school event. You can send her with a cooler of food. With her bad reactions I'm sure she will be willing to stay gluten-free. I wouldn't count on reheating facilities but sandwiches on gluten-free bread, cut veggies, and fruit will fill her up just fine and stay fresh with an ice pack. Contact... -
Really? And you're feeling better? I'm intrigued.

ARCHIVED Just Tested
Skylark replied to banjos's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No, you can't just go gluten-free for three months and see how you do. If you decline the endoscopy you must accept that you have celiac disease because the DGP test is 98% specific. You will be strictly gluten-free for life. -
ARCHIVED Just Tested
Skylark replied to banjos's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If I were you I'd go on with the biopsy. It would help if you knew which test but it's kind of hard to get a false positive celiac test. Sometimes there is a low positive test but a biopsy can turn out to be really clearly celiac. I would want to have the extra information from a biopsy. I mean, what if there is autoimmune damage? -
I can't tolerate gluten-free bread. It gives me asthma. I'm not sure what's getting me yet. Xanthan gum does not agree with a lot of people, or you could be reacting to a new flour or starch like tapioca or sorghum. I would suspect the xanthan gum first since it can give some people diarrhea. You would substitute guar gum, or I recently saw a gluten...

Must be nice. FALCPA does not cover prescription or OTC medicine in the US. Starch can be wheat starch and they don't have to tell us. Alcohol is exempt too, as are USDA regulated foods like meat and poultry.

ARCHIVED Is This Really A Full Panel?
Skylark replied to tallchik77's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Don't apologize for starting a new thread! It's easiest to answer when you do. That new TTG/DGP test is very good. It is usually run in combination with TTG-IgA for the state-of-the-art full panel. I don't now how likely your blood is still at the lab, but I would personally ask for TTG-IgA to be sure. I think your doctor was remiss for not ordering... -
ARCHIVED Tech Challenged Or Rotten Apple?
Skylark replied to JustNana's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Here is the help area. On my PC the help link is in the upper-right just below my name. It's so tiny you might miss it on an iPhone. https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?app=core&module=help To get to your profile, use the grey dropdown at the upper right-hand corner of the board that appears when you click your name. It should be OK... -
You mention a hospitalization. Was she put on antibiotics? As well as vitamins she may need probiotics. Having your digestive system messed up with antibiotics can cause all sorts of unpleasant problems and make food not sit well at all. Get her something good like Ultimate Flora.

ARCHIVED Help! Need Diarrhea Relief
Skylark replied to suziq0805's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If diarrhea just won't stop, I find it helpful to go on clear fluids for a day to let everything settle down. Broth, Jello, sugared soda for calories, and Pedialyte to help replenish your electrolytes are all good. I am usually able to add back white rice and applesauce the next day and maybe a little stewed chicken in the evening. I have to stay away... -
ARCHIVED Update...and Very Scared Now!
Skylark replied to Pandoranitemare's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That sounds more exciting that scary! You have already been gluten-free so you know what it will be like. -
Gotcha! Good to hear several problems have cleared up. That's great news. What kind of testing was it? To answer your question on mint, spearmint, peppermint, hyssop, melissa (lemon balm), and pennyroyal are closely related so you would need to avoid all of those. If you want to test eliminating all the Lamiaceae the list gets a lot bigger...

ARCHIVED Which Probiotics
Skylark replied to JustNana's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't think Primal Defense is safe. They use barley grass and it's not tested for gluten. It's a shame too becasue it would be a nice product. This worried me. Q: Is Primal Defense ULTRA gluten free? A: While every effort is made to cut the cereal grasses before the gluten head is formed and no ingredients known to contain gluten are added to the... -
ARCHIVED Do Celiacs Have To Avoid All Grains?
Skylark replied to quincy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There is no ideal diet for ANY person. You have to take ideas from the various experts and cobble together a diet on which you feel healthy. -
ARCHIVED Grits, Eggs, And Bacon For Breakfast!
Skylark replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You'll have to find the coarse-ground corn somewhere. Then you just boil it with water and a pinch of salt like any porridge, stirring occasionally to keep lumps from forming. When it's cooked to your liking, you can melt in cheese, crumble in bacon, add butter or half and half, or serve with ham and some drippings or sausage. -
ARCHIVED Steel Cut Oats And "gluten Free" Products
Skylark replied to Rat's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Also IHMOing here. I have the same opinion that the immune system responds to even traces of gluten. I don't agree with your "light switch" idea though. Our immune system is absolutely not all-or-nothing. Think about an infected cut for example. You can have a mild, localized response that defeats the infection. If it abscesses you might run a fever... -
ARCHIVED What Do Test Results Mean?
Skylark replied to marys2012's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It means you need a biopsy. DGP-IgA, your positive test, indicates celiac most of the time but not always. There is a little question in your case because all the other tests are negative. Sometimes people with only DGP-IgA have no damage when the biopsy is done. That's probably why your doctor hasn't commented and referred you to a GI. Your immune... -
False positives are common on every sort of food intolerance test. If mint is not a problem for you, don't worry about the test results.

ARCHIVED Functional Abdomial Pain
Skylark replied to BabsV's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Usually the pain management doctors are neurologists. I had myofacial back pain and it was a neuro who put me on a TCA and then ultram when I didn't tolerate the TCA. He also was smart enough to prescribe physical therapy. Physical therapy and a TENS unit sorted the whole thing out in a matter of months. I don't know that yours would be amenable to PT...
