  1. Sometimes a bunch of MSG will get me, and soy sauce has plenty of it!
  2. Chopped nut sundae topping. Why do chopped peanuts need wheat starch, seriously? They're not THAT oily. Fortunately I read the label before I put them on my sundae.
  3. It's possible to have a form of celiac where the antibodies are directed at your nervous system rather than your gut. The symptoms can be ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, or an MS-like syndrome including white spots on MRI. People with the neurological form of celiac are often negative on TTG and anti-EMA and can be biopsy negative. The more useful test...
  4. I've noticed this too. Hopefully it will be fixed in a future patch!

The amino acid composition of coffee isn't even remotely relevant. All proteins are made of amino acids. Dr. Kharrazzian is saying the same thing about a few people who are gluten sensitive cross-reacting to coffee. He says the data is coming out of Cyrex labs. There is peer-reviewed literature on dairy cross-reactions, a poorly executed study on corn...
  6. She's blood/biopsy/genetic negative. A little gluten won't have the same effect as if she were celiac, though she may be miserable for a couple days. A lot of us find that our reactions are stronger after going gluten-free so there is a chance the pizza could hit her really hard. The So Delicious coconut ice cream is really good. I'd recommend it if...
  7. LOL! If I was "fine, thank you" I wouldn't be in this freezing exam room putting up with the likes of you prodding at me!
  8. The R5 elisa test they probably used to get that <5 ppm is not accurate for gluten that's been broken down by yeast. I wouldn't risk it.
  9. Replace things as you can afford. I was a broke student when I was gluten-free so all I replaced was a cutting board and my toaster. I found one on sale for $20. My one big splurge was a nice rice cooker and I had to save for it. I scrubbed everything else, cleaned up my kitchen, and called it good. I was pretty much living on dried lentils and beans...
  10. Mary, I know you're excited for maybe having an answer but you need to stay on gluten for a little longer. You will probably need a biopsy since your tests are not clear and it's best to be eating gluten when it's done to be sure the results are accurate. By the way, the endomysial your doctor ordered is always caused by celiac but it's not as sensitive...
  11. Wow, that's good to know. It's sad but after the melamine thing and the arsenic in imported apple juice, I am a little afraid of food from China. Not to say US food is always safe, but there seems to be more monitoring here.
  12. I understand not wanting to eat gluten! If you're reacting to wheat and gluten/gliadin then I'd seriously consider going gluten-free. Eating gluten once or twice a week is enough to keep you from finding out whether the diet helps. It is an all-or-none thing for most of us. I don't think anyone on the board who was gluten intolerant has regained tolerance...
  13. I've been afraid of flour that isn't tested for gluten since that Tricia Thompson study. I skip the oriental store stuff and pay the extra for Bob's Red Mill. If you do decide to try imported flour, also beware of bugs. I bought imported red rice and a couple months later it was full of moths! Fortunately I had put it in a canister that seals well...
  14. Glad to hear you found something that suits you. Izze is super-yummy. It has more sugar than I tolerate well but I get one sometimes as a treat.
  15. I can usually find an apple or banana and some nuts at a 7-11 in foodless emergencies too. Sometimes there is even lunch meat or hard-boiled eggs, and you can usually get safe chips like Kettle or Lay's.
  16. Anti-EMA or anti-reticulin are the only others I can think of. It sounds like either your Dr. or the lab made a mistake. Ask for tissue transglutaminase (TTG) IgA and DGP-IgA and IgG. Good luck getting the testing she needs.
  17. I laughed out loud when I read this. It's totally true! If I have a grocery store I'm good to go.
  18. I'm glad to hear you're doing better. That's wonderful news! The best thanks of all is if you stay around the board, continue being our friend, and pass what you've learned forward. There's no shortage of other people who need convincing that they're not head cases!
  19. Some celiacs go through an "eat everything in sight" phase when they go gluten-free. I've always thought it was your body going "Hey, I can absorb nutrients now! Gimme!" It's a good thing. It means your digestive system is healing. As squirmingitch says, go for nutrient-dense foods like meat, fish, and poultry, eggs, brightly colored fruits and veggies...
  20. Gosh that's harder. If you are not satisfied with the chef's answer, I wonder if you could drop off food each day? Or provide servings of homemade frozen food? I take frozen soups and stews I make on the weekend for lunch at work all the time. I had really bad allergies and asthma as a child and I had a lot of trouble with school camping trips. It really...
  21. There are no celiac tests then. She needs at least TTG-IgA and DGP (deamidated gliadin) IgG.
  22. The risk depends whether it's DQ2.2 or DQ2.5. Either way she needs a biopsy. You can be celiac with just positive TTG and it's harder to get positive antibody tests in kids.
  23. That's total IgA, which only makes sure the celiac tests worked. What else is on the lab slip?
  24. Dump him and find a guy who treats you better. The ones I date let ME pick the restaurant, wouldn't dream of trying to push food on me, and pretty much do all they can to support my food restrictions. I find that a gluten-free diet is a really handy built-in jerk detector.
  25. Eliminate really does mean eliminate. If you are reacting to dairy you need to get it out of your diet 100% and see if you improve. I know it's hard, since I had to do just that last fall, but now I never get diarrhea.
