ARCHIVED Dr. Says I Don't Have The Celiac Genes?
Skylark replied to Bubba's Mom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't understand your question. DQbeta 1 02:02 is one of the two DQ2 alleles. Perhaps this article on Wikipedia will help. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Dr. Says I Don't Have The Celiac Genes?
Skylark replied to Bubba's Mom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah. It means your GI is an idiot. You are DQ2.2, DQ6.3. You have a form of DQ2 that gives a lower risk of celiac disease than DQ2.5 but it still gives more risk than not having DQ2 at all. That's why the test is labeled "equivocal" rather than "negative". I hope you're off dairy as well as gluten while you're healing. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results In
Skylark replied to researchmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Enterolab is an accredited diagnostic lab. Unlike stool IgA, microscopic fecal fat analysis with Sudan III staining is a very standard and well-accepted diagnostic test. Enterolab uses a quantitative approach to reading the slides, which has been published in a peer-reviewed journal. You can bring the article with you and show it to your GI if she has... -

Fecal fat and the fractures combine to make a pretty strong picture of malabsorption, don't they? I agree that's the best thing to focus on. -
ARCHIVED Gliadin Igg
Skylark replied to October3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If it's the new gliadin peptide IgG it's measuring antibodies that react to a form of gliadin only created by people with celiac disease. It's very sensitive and specific for celiac. The "borderline" reading means he is somewhere between "definitely negative" and "definitely celiac". If it's the old anti-gliadin antibody test, it means he might be gluten... -
If she has both, she must eat a diabetic, gluten-free diet. Both conditions can cause serious, long-term health problems untreated. Gluten-free flours can be really starchy but tell her about almond meal, coconut flour, and flax meal. You can make filling low-carb baked goods out of them. I especially like the way almond flour comes out.

ARCHIVED Gluten Free But Made In A Facilty With Wheat
Skylark replied to BrittLoves2Run's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Gluten-free has no legal definition so it can mean different things to different companies. A good label to look for is the GFCO mark. Open Original Shared Link Those foods are independently tested and the GFCO cutoff is only 10 ppm. Amy's brand tests for gluten and their gluten-free label means the food tested under 20 ppm of gluten. Open Original... -

I wouldn't bank on that TTG IgA being correct, and your doc may tell you this as well. Even the most careful labs sometimes make mistakes. That's why lab slips will come back with a "repeat tested" note sometimes on out-of-range labs and why a doctor's usual response to an inconsistent lab is usually to either disregard it or repeat the test. Unfortunately... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Society Gene Test For Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity?
Skylark replied to carolynmay's topic in Super Sensitive People
Gads, that kook again. Don't waste your time or money on anything from Gluten Free Society. There is not a test that could magically tell you whether you can't tolerate rice. They are trying to make you afraid of a very safe grain to try to con you out of money, and are getting close to succeeding. Rice contains prolamin storage proteins, but not gliadin... -

Gluten can cause acid reflux in gluten-sensitive folks. More evidence for gluten intolerance. Pancreatic insufficiency is common in folks with gluten intolerance/celiac. There is an association between fecal fat and reflux but it's not what you might think. Low stomach acid can cause reflux, poor production of bile and pancreatic enzymes, and malabsorption... -
ARCHIVED One Week So Far, Not Many Changes.
Skylark replied to Cortney's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow, you poor thing. Yes, you could definitely have issues with gluten. You need to give the gluten-free trial more like 4-6 MONTHS. You have a lot of issues that can be slow to resolve like the anxiety, joint pain, and ketosis pilaris. Gluten definitely intensifies anxiety issues, though with OCD all your life there may be more going on. Vitamin and... -

Skylark replied to researchmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
With her current results you cannot rule out Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. Yes, malabsorption is possibly with non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Total IgG isn't usually tested. Low IgA is a risk factor for celiac. Is the only IgG test she got TTG? I would be nice if your daughter had gotten an endoscopy but she's gluten-free now so it wouldn't be reliable... -

Skylark replied to researchmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Legally, your doctor cannot diagnose with a test that has not been validated. It opens him to enormous malpractice issues. Besides, fecal anti-gliadin IgA alone doesn't predict diddlysquat. I keep trying to get people to look at the slides posted on the Enterolab website but nobody listens. Fecal TTG is a more useful test but remember that Dr. Fine... -

Skylark replied to Avalon451's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yep, I about drove my mother crazy telling her she needed to be off gluten. Turns out I was right. The funny thing is that if you are open about your diet and how great it makes you feel, your friends will start to wonder about it. I have two friends plus my mom who learned about the diet from me and discovered they were gluten-sensitive too. -

The other thing to consider is that you might have more food intolerances. Dairy and nightshades are making me tired right now. It's a 1-2 days delayed reaction that continues for 3-4 days after I eat the problem food. -
ARCHIVED Digest Gold W/ Probiotics Enzymes
Skylark replied to TLK879's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree with PricklyPear. You need to contact the manufacturer. The website says there are no fillers in their capsules but there is no clear allergy or gluten information anywhere on that website that I can find. -

Your daughter is DQ5. On the Enterolab reports, the numbers in parenthesis are the modern designations. DQ1 is an old serotype that got split more accurately into DQ5 and DQ6 in the '90s and isn't used much anymore. -
ARCHIVED 3 Genes?
Skylark replied to beebs's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The stuff I've been reading says that the DQ7 B1*0301 chain does not seem to confer risk if there is a different A chain with it. The risk is conferred by A1*0505 (or possibly other HLA genes in the DQ7.5 haplotype). Remember, DQ7.3 is reasonably common, does not confer celiac risk, and still can have B1*0301. Also A*05 jumps risk considerably in DQ2 folks... -
ARCHIVED What The Heck Do I Do Now?
Skylark replied to upwitht21's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I HATE that. I flatly refused antidepressants last summer when I knew I was still hypothyroid even after they adjusted my meds. Damn pill-pushing doctors. What was your TSH? The test is often misinterpreted. If it's over 3.0 and you have hypothyroid symptoms you might ask for an endocrinologist referral. -
ARCHIVED Think I May Try Candida Diet
Skylark replied to HS7474's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Coconut oil is definitely soothing externally or even internally with an applicator. Yeast doesn't like caprylic acid! If eating the coconut oil is an issue you can buy caprylic acid supplements, or perhaps taking ox bile with it would work. I was making coconut oil/coconut flour bread. Another thing I like is Zand Candida Quick Cleanse. It's an herbal... -

ARCHIVED Think I May Try Candida Diet
Skylark replied to HS7474's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I think there are stool tests for yeast. I was going by the vaginal yeast becasue my understanding from the GAPS book is that vaginal flora reflects gut flora. I don't know about the breast pain then. You could ask your doctor about trying Diflucan. You probably need something systemic. Coconut oil can't hurt and the caprylic acid may get into blood.... -
ARCHIVED Fructose Malabsorbtion?
Skylark replied to kevinmiller's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't understand how you could have fructose malabsorption, be doing OK, and then have a flare-up on the same foods? Also fructose malabsorption causes diarrhea, not oily stools. I bet you got into some gluten somehow. By the way, have you considered eating those funny green things called vegetables? You can make dairy-free dip with plain soy yogurt... -
ARCHIVED Think I May Try Candida Diet
Skylark replied to HS7474's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yep, but I don't think my yeast was too bad. I had the recurring vaginal yeast mostly under control before with Monistat but the remaining itchiness and "something isn't quite right" feeling is gone now. Hopefully if it's killed there, it's better controlled in my bowel too. I have been on GAPS somewhat less than perfectly, ate coconut oil by the spoonful... -
