ARCHIVED Hello, I'm Dairy And Soy Intolerant, And Now Gluten Too?
Skylark replied to Mom of Boys's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Two days without gluten will not change your test. I hope you continue to feel better gluten-free! -
Nytol is just diphenhydramine. There are plenty of diphenhydramine sleep aids and antihistamines on the market. Benedryl is listed at glutenfreedrugs.com as safe and the company states their products are allergen-free.

ARCHIVED Melatonin Rules For Sleep Issues

You weren't eating a lot of seafood on vacation were you? I find that I don't sleep well at all without supplementing omega-3s with fish oil. The typical American diet is horribly omega-3 deficient. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Stink?
Skylark replied to domesticactivist's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
"Just" an intolerance can still make you very sick. My doctors also tell me they feel like it's hard to get positive celiac testing even in people with pretty clear celiac symptoms. It sounds kinda like you need to throw away the idea of being a hypochondriac and work though your emotional issues either way. It can be very painful feeling sick and being... -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Pls Explain To Me Recessive Vs Dominant Celiac Genes
Skylark replied to beebs's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
She might be confusing having one copy of DQ2 or DQ8 rather than two copies with recessive. -
ARCHIVED Bread Without Gum And Starch
Skylark replied to lemontree1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Have you tried any of the grain-free breads? I've been making lovely baked goods from flax meal, almond meal, or coconut fiber. They take a lot of eggs and oil, but no starch or gums. Try this, only don't use the salt. It's plenty salty from the baking powder. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Explaining Celiac To People Without Talking About Poop?

Hehee. I've done this too for people who wouldn't take NO for an answer. -
The yeast is related by the way. Part of what causes autoimmunity is when your damaged intestine lets food proteins across for your immune system to react with. Certain things like milk can trick the immune system, and certain foods like legumes and potatoes worsen the problem. Often the bacterial balance isn't right either, and that adds to the leakiness...

You are trying the diet so you will find out soon enough. In a few months (the damage takes time to heal) your anemia should resolve, the joint pain ease, the anxiety start to fade into the distance, and you should feel much better. If you are strictly gluten-free for 4-6 months and nothing changes at all then you know gluten isn't the issue. Do plan on...

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Flour Enhances Dough Hydration For Premium Bakery
Skylark replied to kenlove's topic in Publications & Publicity
Yes, it sounds like Expandex. That stuff is tricky to work with. I'm actually making much better tasting baked goods since I went grain free. I've been baking with almond meal, flax meal, or coconut flour and making yummy, moist breads and muffins. -
ARCHIVED Dh Or No Celiac? I Am Soo Confused.
Skylark replied to lil'chefy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If your guess is correct that she is picky from stomach-aches, her eating habits should improve fairly quickly. My super-picky nephew asked to try one of my rice cakes out of curiosity, and it passed the picky kid test. He likes them with a little jelly. Amy's gluten-free macaroni and cheese and Glutino pretzels have also passed with flying colors. Other... -
You can make all the threads you want, but we will all tell you that you are still celiac and need to be off gluten. My answer in your other thread still applies.

ARCHIVED Neg Ema / Positive Ttg And Biopsy / Negative Hla
Skylark replied to maramelia's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No, the studies have been done. Prometheus did a very large genetic study of 10,000 people with GI trouble. 0.16% of the people who were celiac by blood test didn't have DQ2 or DQ8. This means celiacs without the usual genes are 1.6 per thousand. -
Thanks for your kind post. This is a remarkable community.

ARCHIVED Neg Ema / Positive Ttg And Biopsy / Negative Hla
Skylark replied to maramelia's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, it's possible to have only part of the celaic panel positive and lack the so-called celiac genes. DQ2 and DQ8 only convey risk, they do not guarantee presence or absence of celiac disease. Notice that Ravenwoodglass who answered above is double DQ9 and had very severe celiac symptoms. I hope your son improves on the gluten free diet! -
ARCHIVED Cant Find Out If My Fav Alcohol Is gluten-free
Skylark replied to ScarlettsMommy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That makes sense. Agreed if they haven't a clue what's in a mix I'm not drinking it! I mostly stick to simple drinks. Scotch, gin & tonic, martinis, cider, (my favorite Magner's and Strongbow are gluten-free) or a glass of wine. -

Sweet and sour mix is usually lemon juice with sugar or simple syrup. How do they get gluten in that? Are you sure they know what gluten means and didn't think it was glucose? I'd be wanting to know what gluten ingredient in the frozen daquiris too. The only thing I can think of is malt, but that's relatively unusual because it's expensive. Bloody... -

Skylark replied to ScarlettsMommy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I take it you're in the US? If carmel color is made from wheat it must say carmel color (wheat) or "contains wheat ingredients" somewhere on the label. Most carmel color in the US is made from corn because corn is so easy to grow here. Hydrolyzed plant/vegetable protein is exactly the same. If it contains wheat protein in the hydrolysate it must have... -

ARCHIVED Cant Find Out If My Fav Alcohol Is gluten-free
Skylark replied to ScarlettsMommy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes,it helps to know what's in the drink you are worried about. I've never seen gluten in sweet and sour mix or fruit juice. Your bartender would probably be happy to show you the label on the sweet and sour mix or tell you what's in it if they make it. Flavored alcohols like schnapps and liquers are usually safe. They are flavored grain neutral... -

I tell people that eating gluten gives me symptoms like having food poisoning. It's reasonably polite and everyone completely understands what I mean. -
ARCHIVED Diarrhea Not Related To Gluten
Skylark replied to GFreeMO's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It was happening to me occasionally. I haven't had a single random D episode since starting the GAPS diet and going dairy-free. I've only been at it for about a month and a half and the D was pretty occasional so it's hard to be sure. -
ARCHIVED Dh Or No Celiac? I Am Soo Confused.
Skylark replied to lil'chefy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A positive DH test is a positive test for celiac, and you've had it three separate times. There is no question about you having celiac disease. Celiac autoimmunity takes on all sorts of different forms, some of which never show up on blood & endoscopy. It can shift and change with time, and it's not uncommon for DH to go into remission but other autoimmunity... -

I didn't replace my food processors. I just scrubbed everything and ran it through the dishwasher. I didn't put bread in mine though. I use them mostly for chopping/shredding veggies and pureeing soups. Rubbing alcohol should dissolve gluten if you're concerned. The only things I replaced were cutting boards, my colander because it was so hard to scrub...
