ARCHIVED Elimination Diet - Feel Like Crap!
lucia replied to JenniferLynn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sounds like withdrawal to me, given the timeline. Just hang in there. If it is withdrawal, it will pass. (If not, you can look into other issues, but I don't think you'll need to.) -
ARCHIVED How Long Do You Give It Before You Cut Something Else Out?
lucia replied to danaf617's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My reactions arose as if spontaneously over time. I was fine at first with dairy, then I found I could only eat yogurt and goat cheese but no other dairy, then I couldn't even stomach yogurt and goat cheese. After that, I started to have GI reactions to soy, then to corn. You definitely have put enough time behind your dairy intake to try cutting out soy... -

ARCHIVED "gluten Free Is All The Rage Now"
lucia replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would put him in the category of gluten intolerant. His body is clearly reacting to gluten. I guess, then, the question is if Gwyneth Paltrow and others who inconsistently follow a gluten-free diet have a medical benefit from it. I would never discourage someone from abstaining from gluten, but I wouldn't encourage it as a health priority either unless... -
ARCHIVED "gluten Free Is All The Rage Now"
lucia replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not convinced that there are health benefits to eating gluten free, unless you're celiac or gluten intolerant. What's the reason for it? Seems like it'd be more healthy to concentrate on eating a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh foods. I think the same thing though about "low fat" foods. Studies have shown that people eat more of low... -
ARCHIVED Bacterial Overgrowth - Specific Carbohydrate Diet?
lucia replied to lucia's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been gluten free now for 4 and 1/2 long months. At first, my GI symptoms receded entirely unless I accidentally consumed gluten. Then, one by one, I became intolerant to foods, including all dairy, soy, and corn. It's only been recently that I get cramps no matter what I eat or drink. I had a pretty healthy diet before I stopped eating gluten - lots... -

ARCHIVED Bacterial Overgrowth - Specific Carbohydrate Diet?
lucia posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Through a combination of an elimination diet and a food diary, I've concluded that, yes, everything I put into my gut is making me sick. Even when I drink water, I am getting some cramping of my stomach. I think I'm getting the most severe cramps from sweet potatos, bananas, and rice, which are starchy. I think I must have bacterial overgrowth. Does that... -
ARCHIVED Does More Gluten Consumed Mean Longer Duration Of Symptoms?
lucia replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What an awful experience! I have noticed that consuming a higher quantity of gluten means that the symptoms are more intense, but not of a longer duration. -
ARCHIVED Elimination Diet - Making Me Sick?!?
lucia replied to lucia's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks everyone. India, I've decided to go down to just white rice, mung beans, and broth made from beef. I've been vegetarian now for well over a decade, but my acupuncturist insisted on the beef broth because she says I'm so weak. It's hard to heal when you're not getting enough nutrients (sigh). -
ARCHIVED Elimination Diet - Making Me Sick?!?
lucia replied to lucia's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
This is kind of a nightmare. How long is this going to last? It seems like some people on the board don't go through this kind of thing. Does this mean that I have a lot of damage? -
ARCHIVED Elimination Diet - Making Me Sick?!?
lucia replied to lucia's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm not taking any vitamins or supplements right now. I had my levels tested, and they're in range. I'll start with supplements again at some point. RIght now, I just need the GI pain to stop. -
ARCHIVED Elimination Diet - Making Me Sick?!?
lucia replied to lucia's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks everyone. I choose quinoa, because I seemed to be reacting to rice, at least brown rice. I'm pescetarian so I choose to eat tuna. I'll need to rethink this, and cut back. -
ARCHIVED Elimination Diet - Making Me Sick?!?
lucia replied to lucia's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
My understanding though is that "food intolerances" and "allergies" are not the same thing. People can be intolerant to certain foods, but these won't show up on the ELISA test. -
I am at the beginning stages of an elimination diet. I'm only eating 8 foods total, yet I'm still getting sick - stomach cramps, nausea, joint pain, etc. The foods are: sweet potato quinoa banana kale sunflower seeds organic tuna olive oil sea salt Does anyone have any suggestions? Any likely suspects for making me sick on this list? I'd appreciate...

What your doctor said is simply not true. When I eat soy, my stomach cramps up and bloats. When I eat corn, my GI symptoms also return and my neuropathy increases.

ARCHIVED What Is Causing My Problems?
lucia replied to ToriMartin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It sounds like you are well on your way. It takes most people a long time to realize they have issues with gluten. That's a big step in itself. Besides that, a lot of people (including myself) struggle with giving up other foods, such as dairy and corn. Another common one that people have issues with is soy, which is found in many packaged foods. Your food... -
ARCHIVED 9 Months Gluten Free...still Having Issues
lucia replied to JennQ's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Christine, Don't worry, it's a learning process for all of us. People talk about a "learning curve" for learning to do without gluten. You can begin a topic on the board and ask your questions there, but I also recommend finding a book that pulls all the info together ("Gluten-free for Dummies" is supposed to be good). Best, lucia -
Except for the injera (bread), the food will be gluten-free. Ethiopian food is traditionally gluten-free. (I used to frequent such restaurants, because they're also good for vegetarians.) The server may be used to people asking specifically about the injera. That may be why she didn't answer your question beyond that statement. I don't know if you'd want...

ARCHIVED Help! I Seem To Be Intolerant Of Everything!
lucia replied to shayre's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Shayre, It sounds like you're learning a lot about what you cannot tolerate - and that's good! This is a process - physical as well as psychological. Understandably, all of a sudden your body isn't working the way you've come to count on it, and you're frustrated and maybe overwhelmed. At least that's how I feel, and I worry about the future since so... -
ARCHIVED It's Official....i Am Crazy!
lucia replied to kaki-clam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just wanted to add that my friend who has found relief from fish oil has to take way above the recommended dosage for the effect. I think it's amazing that supplements can effect bipolar symptoms. That makes me wonder about our modern diet, frankly. -
ARCHIVED New To Forum Lots Of Questions
lucia replied to nurse93's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I also agree with this. I think some people rely too much on gluten-free foods when they start off. They're actually hard to digest, and your body needs a break from hard-to-digest foods right now! Instead, you'll likely need to learn about foods you're not in the habit of eating. Good substitutes for gluten-filled foods included different types of rice,... -
Shayre, When I first began reading these boards, I was horrified at the thought of needing to eliminate lots of foods. I loved to eat so much that I still remember whole meals I've had in years past. I thought I could *never* give up stove-cooked popcorn. At this point, I'm only eating six foods, at the beginning of an elimination diet. But after an...
