  1. Oh, Jason --- you're right, it's not fair that we have to deal with this. Try not to panic. It sounds like you need to do some investigative work. Has anything else changed since you started seeing her? Like are you eating out more? Are you drinking more alcohol? Have you been eating over her place, where there may be danger of cross contamination? ...

    ARCHIVED Corn :(

Me too! I have major issues with corn! And, I was shocked when I discovered this. I too tested it numerous times, because it just didn't seem possible. Corn appears to be responsible for most - if not, all - of my neuropathic pain, i.e. nerve damage in my feet, lower legs, hands, and lower arms. When I don't have corn, this pain goes away almost entirely...
  3. Hi shayre, welcome to the site! I'm like you in that I'm trying to figure out what foods I can't tolerate. I've resorted to an elimination diet. That may be the best solution for you, as well. I thought that I would hate being on such a restricted diet, but instead I'm enjoying it because my gut finally feels alright! If you decide to go that route, there...
  4. I noticed on your list of foods you mention Amy's meals. A lot of people react to those, even though they say "gluten-free". Apparently, they have a low enough gluten content to meet the dietary standards for gluten-free so they can label their foods that way, but they actually do have some gluten. I know you already know this, but it's better to eat unprocessed...
  5. These are also signs of anemia, so make sure the doctors pay attention to her red blood cell count. In any case, a full check-up with labs is necessary.
  6. It sounds *all* good. Totally normal people are boring. When you write fiction, you're supposed to add a kind of "tick" to a character to make them more interesting to the reader.
  7. My doctor prescribed a low dosage of Levothyroxine. I'm reacting to the corn starch in it. I read there are natural forms of thyroid medication. Any suggestions for which one to recommend to my doctor?
  8. My doctor thinks I have hypothyroidism, even though my labs don't show it. I have all the symptoms. I'm confused about the long term consequences of thyroid malfunction. If I am hypothyroidic, is this for life? Or, is this a temporary consequence of celiac (like food intolerances)?
  9. I was worried about my neuropathy, because I'd read that it doesn't always clear up. After 4 months of a gluten-free diet, a lot of my pain has resolved but I can attribute that directly to: 1) acupuncture, which I highly recommend to you for your neuropathy, and 2) eliminating corn from my diet. As soon as I eliminated corn from my diet, most of my...
  10. Sounds good. Let us know how it turns out.
  11. Inflammation is "hot" topic in medicine. It appears connected to almost every known chronic disease -- from heart disease to cancer, diabetes to obesity, autism to dementia, and even depression. Other inflammatory diseases such as allergies, asthma, arthritis, and autoimmune disease are increasing at dramatic rates. As physicians we are trained to shut off...
  12. Yes! How do we know what foods are genetically modified? I'm reactive to corn. Someone suggested that maybe I'm only reacting to corn that has been genetically modified. That seems plausible (don't mess with mother nature ... grrrrr ...), but how do I know?
  13. Also, you do have signs of candida, which would be "fueled" (quite literally) by the sugar in soda. It could account for why your current "elimination diet" is making you feel worse. If you cut out the soda, you'd already be on an anti-candida diet. If you feel better, that would give you another clue to (hopefully) bring to your doctor, nutritionist or other...
  14. Something I've noticed in my own and other peoples' stories is that the foods we crave the most are sometimes the foods that most need to go. Seems to be one of the mysteries of our bodies. (Both sugar and caffeine have addictive properties.)

    ARCHIVED Go Ask Connie

Connie, I stopped eating gluten 4 months ago now, and I still feel like crap. 1) If we've been putting gluten into our bodies for our whole lives but we can't tolerate it, the gluten is bound to have serious effects. Our bodies are really good at holding out, for years even, but eventually that s*#@ hits the fan. I know that I had symptoms as far...
  16. I'm so sorry for your loss, ravenwoodglass. She sounds like she had a wonderful life, and a wonderful friend in you. This is a beautiful testimony.

    ARCHIVED Rant

Oh, Connie - this too shall pass. I hope you can go home, maybe have a nice bath, and surround yourself with good things. Maybe watch something that makes you laugh?
  18. Hi curiousgirl, I asked pretty much the exact same question as you a few weeks ago. Here's the link: I agree with ravenwoodglass that ideally you'd find an allergist to support this process. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find one (in NYC) who will work with me on an elimination diet. I was told that it's normally something people do...
  19. That's hilarious. I'm imagining the reaction.
  20. I like your advice. It's very inspirational. Thank-you.
  21. GlutenFreeManna, I feel the same way as you. I got really sick in January. It was like my whole body just broke down at that point. I pretty much cut out a consulting gig I was doing, but I did manage a class through March. After that, even going to class 3 times a week and studying was impossible. I couldn't think, and I was in a lot of pain. I've...
  22. I'm on a highly restrictive elimination diet. Been doing okay, except that most recently I've been experiencing cramping and diarrhea after eating tuna fish. My body's not used to so much fish, I think. I'm going to change over to mung beans. Today I woke up and felt nauseous and generally yucky again. The only thing I've added has been ginger...
  23. That's good to hear. Let her know we're thinking of her.
  24. You may know this already, but celiac is one of the major causes of infertility. It really messes us up. When my body practically broke down in January after 38 years of eating gluten, one of my symptoms was a missed period for the first time in my life. I had spotting instead, which really freaked me out. Since then, my cycles have been inconsistent,...
  25. Thanks, Kareng. In any case, I have a doctor's appointment for Monday. We'll see if he can give me supplements that are free from corn, soy, dairy, and gluten. Thanks, everyone! This list is a really *great* resource! If my doctor can't give me iron supplements that don't make me sick, I know I have a lot of options.
