  1. How about a nice fruit and cheese platter? Maybe with some seasonal fruit? Or, dried fruit? I've discovered that people really like being served something different, and dried fruit (which most people don't seem to eat) goes over well. Another suggestion for the platter is nuts. Also somewhat unusual, and so welcome.
  2. I just wanted to chime in that I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia as well in my mid-twenties. I was told then that I would always suffer from fibromyalgia. But it was under control through diet, exercise, and acupuncture within a few years. I used to sometimes have symptoms if I wasn't getting enough exercise. Since going off of gluten, I haven't had *any...
  3. It's true what they say - the diet will fall into place for you after awhile. I went through the exact same process that you describe - going through my cupboards and ending up discouraged. I'd encourage you to take a look at the recipe section on the site and also maybe to search for "ideas for breakfast," "ideas for lunch," etc. It's helpful to draw on...
  4. Don't give up! You've gotten lots of ideas here. That said, I don't think that Western medicine is very well-equipped to deal with this kind of illness. I wouldn't want to go without it, and it is amazing at many things, but not at dealing with autoimmune disease(s). I hope that as more people are diagnosed with this kind of illness, Western medicine will...
  5. I think you are being very wise to bring your own food, and I congratulate you for making the commitment to take care of yourself! I have not been as wise as you, and early on I got sick more than I should have from accidentally eating gluten. It really sucks to get sick when you could have avoided it. I'm on a really restricted diet now, but I have...
  6. A friend who has suffered from autoimmune-like symptoms for years is now being helped by an Integrated Medicine doctor. I looked into this kind of doctor for myself, but unfortunately most do not take insurance. They need to spend more time with their patients than most insurance plans allow.
  7. I had sudden and disabling anxiety for about a year and some before my GI symptoms started. It was bad enough that my doctor put me on an anti-depressant. As soon as I was gluten free for 3 months, I went off of the anti-depressant, and the anxiety has not resurfaced. The connection is very clear to me.
  8. Have you seen an allergist? Perhaps you are actually allergic to these foods (not including the beer, which is gluten-based)?
  9. What about meat? -packed with protein and fat. I'd recommend making and ingesting a broth made of chicken or beef, as well as eating good portions of meat with meals. Otherwise, people have made really good suggestions for upping your calorie intake. When I started on the gluten-free diet, I also felt hungry all the time. I think it was actually a sign...
  10. Jackay, Sometimes people try prepackaged herbs, but that's not what I mean. I actually received specific herbs that were put together for my condition (as determined by my acupuncturist). The Chinese herbalist will talk to a person about her condition and read her pulse and tongue, and only then prescribe herbs. It felt like such a miracle that I just...
  11. Are you saying this is the case all the time? It happened to me that everything I ingested including water caused GI pain and distress. I treated it through a specific carbohydrate diet, which is used for bacterial overgrowth. I had a lab test for this, but don't have the results back yet so I can't say for sure if this was the issue. In any case, the diet...
  12. I started to have GI symptoms with everything I ingested at one point. Even drinking water gave me stomach cramps. I treated it through the specific carbohydrate diet, assuming I had intestinal overgrowth. This diet is close to what you're eating, except that all veggies are cooked and sugar is banned. You can find more info online. The diet worked for...
  13. I react to corn as strongly as if I was glutened.
  14. Ada, I stopped eating corn because I thought maybe I was reacting to it with GI symptoms. Instead, what happened is that within 3 days almost all of my neuropathy disappeared. I've eaten corn twice since then, and both times the neuropathy has come back full force. It's scary! I don't know if this will be forever (it's quite possible), but I'm just taking...
  15. Hi Ada, A few things: Firstly, my impression from reading this board is that people who are struggling with neurological symptoms tend to take longer to recover. That's just anecdotal, but several people voiced their agreement when I submitted this on another thread. Secondly, it takes a long time to heal! At one month, I could still barely get off...
  16. My insomnia only cleared up in response to herbs I received from my acupuncturist. (Herbs are also available through a Chinese herbalist.) I don't know what I would have done otherwise. I couldn't find any relief. It was awful. I feel for you.
  17. I feel genuinely disabled sometimes, I feel so freakishly different than everybody else. The things they take for granted would make me sick for a week. But other times, it's ok. I just remember to bring an avocado with me, or some nuts, whatever.
  18. Hi, A lot of people on the site go through a period of a restricted diet during which they eat only whole foods. That seems to generally get people over the most difficult period, when they may be reacting to various processed foods. I don't think you need to eat processed foods at all. You can be gluten-free and never touch gluten-free bread or other...
  19. My neuropathy cleared up almost entirely when I stopped eating corn. It comes back immediately if I ingest corn.
  20. These are the kind of symptoms that I've found it's hard for Western medicine to deal with, but which are very important for Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners to make a diagnosis. I know that's not very helpful, but I was frustrated myself trying to describe my symptoms to an M.D. even one who specializes in celiac. I have found relief through...
  21. For ideas, also check out the Recipe section on the site. And, searching for things like "breakfast ideas" or "what to eat" should also bring up some good posts.
  22. Hi Michayla, Just a note to say that the severity of your symptoms doesn't indicate the amount of damage to your intestines from celiac. Some people have no symptoms, but will have much damage from celiac when their intestinal wall is viewed through an endoscope. Lucia
  23. I don't have an official diagnosis through labs. My doctor diagnosed me gluten intolerant based on dietary response. It was my idea to stop eating gluten too. The GI doc I saw told me that I didn't have celiac. I still don't know whether he read my endoscopy right, but I'm suspicious. He also told me that neuropathic pain does not coexist with celiac, which...
  24. That's the way to go! Congratulations!!! It is kind of like a birthday ...
  25. Ask your doctor about bacterial overgrowth and colitis. The same thing happened to me, so I did some research as to what it could be. The story ends happily. I started treating myself for bacterial overgrowth with a specific carbohydrate diet, and I'm getting better. I have a "breath test" tomorrow which may confirm my self-diagnosis. We'll see. In any...
