  1. I'm glad you found the closeout Betty Crocker mixes. I went to Big Lots and saw the Envirokidz cereal. I also saw (and bought) Sam Mill's Corn Pasta for 1.20 and Mother's Rice cakes for 1.29. The rice cakes are the first I have found that don't contain soy. They do contain milk (butter) but it hasn't been bothering me in small amounts. I made Peanut...
  2. I've seen a lot of good ones from Mambosprouts. Also check out the website organicgrocerydeals.com It's not a gluten-free site, but a lot of organic coupons are also gluten free products. They will post about the sales at the major organic stores (Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Earthfare, etc.) as well as conventional stores.
  3. Gyro meat is SO easy to make. It's one of the things I made that was naturally gluten free prior to going gluten free. Here's a sample recipe: http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/traditional-gyro-meat/Detail.aspx You can use other types of ground meat as well. I often do all lamb or all beef. I've also made it with bison and ground chicken. If you really...
  4. And here's an article from this site about traveling gluten free in France: https://www.celiac.com/articles/21485/1/France-sans-Pain-How-to-Travel-Gluten-Free-in-France/Page1.html It seems French health stores have a variety of Gluten free breads.
  5. Here's a really good blog post on Gluten-free products in Germany: Open Original Shared Link I would love the chance to explore new stores looking for gluten free food. Before you go look up the phrase "Gluten Free" in all the different languages of the countries you will be visiting. That way you can look for it on the packages of food in the stores...
  6. I think many doctors are ignorant and I think a small minority of doctors do not want to diagnose Celiac because they are afraid you won't need them for future health problems. Which is also ignorance, since Celiac's often have other conditions related to Celiac's disease. Some doctors probably also like to be able prescribe a "quick and easy fix" by just...
  7. Oh yeah gluten eaters would like it. I made it for my DH's birthday and he is not 100% gluten free, but he eats gluten free at home for me. I was expecting a gluten free cake to be dry, but this cake remained moist for days afterward. It was VERY sweet tasting, but I had not had any sugar for almost 6 months. I had been using only honey and natural fruit...
  8. I would be interested to know if you have success with this as well. I'm familiar with Sallon Fallon's book and methods. I never would have thought to try soaking other grains though.
  9. I don't have a recipe, but I used Pamela's white cake mix for a birthday cake and it tasted better than any gluten mix I ever tried. I was in to making cakes from scratch before going gluten free, but I haven't had good luck with scratch baking gluten free except for banana bread.
  10. People with gluten issues often have gallbladder issues as well. I had mine out in an emergency procedure years before I knew I was gluten intolerant. What you are describing does sound like a gallbladder attack so be sure to monitor it. I have heard the gallbladder can stop working even if you have no stones or sludge in it. If you don't have anymore...
  11. Maybe if you gave us some more details about your situation we would be able to help you figure it out better. Are you a diagnosed celiac? Gluten intolerant? Or did you just decide to do the diet? What do you eat on a regular basis on a "gluten free diet"? What vitamins do you take? Have you had any testing for vitamin deficiencies? Do you...
  12. Tell the doctor you have a family history of celiac and hopefully you won't have to push to hard. The harder thing is finding a doctor that knows what celiac's is or is up to date on it. Don't let them tell you only children have it (they used to think it was something kids outgrew, now they know that's false). The best thing to do if you don't have a...
  13. Everyone else already gave you great advice so I'll just say I can understand the frustration. I had so many tests, I too felt like I had donated my body to science or something. I used to pray they would find something, anything. It's the worst thing in the world to not know what's wrong, but you are not crazy. You have pain for a reason. Hang in there...
  14. Earthfare--a health food store in the southeast has a list you can print out: Open Original Shared Link Farm Fresh has a whole aisle labeled gluten free and you can also use their online shopping (Internet Express) to look up products: Open Original Shared Link It won't give you a list of all items that are gluten free (like items that conatin no gluten...
  15. If it's your own grill and you have not grilled bread or gluten-containing marinades in the past then you are okay. If you have cleaned it really well and do not get sick, then I wouldn't worry. I would worry more about grills other people own or grills in public parks.
  16. I've heard you are supposed to get rid of wooden cutting boards when you go gluten free. I can't imagine that the counter tops would be safe. I would always be afraid to prepare food on the them if I lived there. If that place is your ONLY option I'm sure you could work around it by always preparing food on cutting boards placed on top of the counter tops...
  17. Did you go gluten free before or after tests? The blood tests could be false negatives if you went gluten free before testing. Also, if you want to get more testing (like a biospy) you need to keep eating gluten until the tests are done or the results could be wrong. Even if you keep eating gluten and have the tests and they all turn up negative you may...
  18. It sounds like you have yet to go completely gluten free. You can't do it for just a few days and feel better. You can't "cheat" by having things like tomato soup with just a little bit of gluten and feel better. A little bit of gluten is like a little bit of poison if you have celiac or gluten intolerance. It is also like a drug for some and you body...
  19. Also, I forgot to answer your question about brands. I've seen posts about Lays Stax being gluten free because they are made on dedicated equipment. I've see many brands of tortilla chips say gluten free right on the package (Grande and Snyders of Hanover are two I can think of, just be sure they say gluten free), so chips and salsa or chips and guacamole...
  20. First, make several things that you can eat OR bring some back up snacks in your purse. If you make safe things either be sure to be the first one through the line or fix yourself a plate at home before you arrive. Once several people have gone through it's pretty likely that someone will take a spoon from a dish with gluten and use it in your gluten free...
  21. You will feel drained and more tired for the first week or two. You body may be going through withdrawal symptoms and it takes a lot of energy to heal. Many people report they sleep more when they first go gluten free. If you try it for several months and you are still feeling run down then maybe you are missing some vitamins you need. Have your doctor...
  22. I was going to say the same thing. I eliminated all carbs for a month for my elimination diet and I read a lot on low carb forums to get ideas for what to eat. Your body will be going through carb withdrawal for the first week or two. Once you get over the two week hump most people start feeling better. They call this the "induction flu" on the low carb...
  23. Just wondering if anyone else likes to search out deals and save money as much as I do. I'm always scouring the clearance racks, on the lookout for closeout deals. I think I love the hunt more than the actual purchasing. I go to thrift stores for clothes and yard sales for used furniture or other items. If I'm looking to buy something new I will price...
  24. I have had Asthma really bad all of my life. I couldn't run around as much as other kids, never ran the mile in gym class (I always had to walk it). Now at the age 30 I gave up gluten and dairy and it's gone. I realized it was gone when I found myself walking to the store one day in a hurry and I realized I usually would not be able to walk that fast without...
  25. Thanks for the tip, I never would have thought to look for gluten-free stuff at Big Lots. I bet they have a lot of stuff come through when packaging changes.
