  1. You can take anything that is not liquid through. So things like gluten-free pretzels, gluten-free crackers, etc should be fine. Take a clean empty water bottle through security and fill it up at a drinking fountain on the other side.
  2. You can pack anything that has liquid (like canned meats) in your checked bag. I would not risk taking much through security. You may have to choose to throw it away or be detained and miss your flight like the breast milk mom.
  3. I've never heard of putting flour in chili. I use tomato paste and Heinz tomato soup to make it thick. I don't add any water at all.
  4. Tonight we're having Kung Pao chicken with fried mung bean noodles (I'm getting tired or rice, lol).
  5. Pamelas ginger cookies with almonds are really good. They are a soft cookie, which surprised me. Most other gluten-free cookies i have tried have a chalky or gritty texture. Not Pamelas. They are good.
  6. Gluten free pizza! Using King Arthur's recipeand flour mix. This is only my second time making it. It was really good the first time though.
  7. I lost weight, but I had gained a lot when I was really sick and so I had it to lose. I still have some to lose but I'm not stressing out about it. The most important thing is to be healthy no matter what your weight does. I think a lot of people's bodies normalize once they eliminate the gluten.
  8. After 6 months dairy free I was able to add yogurt and lactose free cheese back into my diet. I'm 11 months gluten free and I still can not tolerate milk though unless it is in a baked good (and that seems to be hit and miss). So I avoid dairy for the most part. No ice cream for me either Some people have problems with lactose, some have problems...
  9. FYI the original post was made in 2008. People gave some good advice though. It's too bad they never came back to update us on their friend.
  10. Grilled cheese sandwiches with Udi's bread. Cheese omelette. Tacos. Cheese on salads--all kinds. Cheese burgers.
  11. We couldn't go anywhere this year, so I made a turkey, sweet potatoes, green beans with almonds, stuffing with Udi's bread, and pumpkin pie with coconut milk and a date/almond crust. It was the least stressful holiday I've ever had.
  12. I made turkey soupfrom all the left over Thanksgiving turkey and biscuits from gluten free bisquick. The soup I have made before--it was super yum and perfect for a cold day. The biscuits I made for the first time. They were the best gluten-free biscuits I have made but I probably won't make them again. They had an eggy taste (I've never put egg in regular...
  13. Sorry, but I have to disagree with the author of that article. While it's true that going gluten free may not help all people lose weight, if they limit the number of gltuen free replacement items in their diet they will probably be eating healthier than the Standard American Diet. I actually think a large portion ofthe population could stand to benefit...
  14. Some of my worst symptoms were actually joint point and muscle weakness. You need to go gluten free completely. All you have done is mask the symtpoms. Continuing to eat even a small amount of gluten is doing damage to you body even if you don't have bad gastro-intestinal syptoms. You should still get checked for other auto-immune diseases such as lupus...
  15. The only way to make it cost dramatically less is to change what your family is used to eating. Pasta and bread are once a month treats for me. I don't buy them or make them very often. We eat mostly food that is naturally gluten free without major substitutions or changes. Tacos with corn torillas, chili, soups, stews, roasts in the slow cooker, grilled...
  16. I take the opposite approach. I make it a point to call and praise the ones that do a good job. If they do a poor job I just don't go back. While calling to complain MAY get you something like an appology or a gift card or better service next time, it could also have the opposite impact in some places. Some places might decide that catering to us is too...
  17. You should have told her that children don't "outgrow" celiac. She has this for life and will always have to eat gluten free. I would be very leery about letting her babysit if I were you.
  18. It depends on what it is that I'm making. I use coconut milk for sweet/creamy things that need a thick milk, almond milk for cereal and non-sweet baked things, goat's milk (reconstitituted powder) for anything savory or calling for buttermilk. Goat's cheese on pizzas and some casseroles. I use olive oil for sauteeing and flavor (like if I'm just having...
  19. I WAS allergic to pork for years prior to going gluten free. Strangely, a couple months ago I ate some regular pepperoni by mistake and I didn't have a reaction. So I think my pork allergy went away with a gluten free diet somehow. I'm a little scared to try to eat more though. My reaction used to be the type where my throat closed up. Another person...
  20. Sorry the microwave popcorn got you! I do check the labels of processed things pretty much everytime. It's time consuming, but it's better than getting sick or buying something and realizing you can't eat it after you get it home. This is what I do too! I use olive oil for mine. For an extra special treat you can make kettle corn this way too...
  21. Welcome! The Endoscopy gives more information about how much damage you have. However it's not always conclusive either. The damage could be patchy and if they don't take enough samples from the right places then they may miss it. The question you need to ask yourself is if you need to have a doctor diagnosis to stick to the diet or to convince other...
  22. Truth is you won't know whether YOU can eat out until you try. I was discouraged with my first try, which was at a place without a gluten free menu. And so I didn't try to eat out again for a while. I've learned that for me personally, I can't eat at a place unless then have a gluten free menu and well trained staff. Since my first big fail I have only...
  23. The best one I have had was not a hamburger bun, but a bagel. I used a Udi's bagel one time as a bun. I've also used rice cakes--not good tasting really, but it works to hold the burger. Most of the time I eat my burger pattie without a bun or I use lettuce to wrap it like they do at Red Robin.
  24. What brand olive oil are you using? A while back I saw a thread about Spectrum Olive Oil being made on the same lines as wheat germ oil. A couple people posted they had reacted to that brand only. They switched brands and were fine. I would definiately eliminate it to see if it's olive oil itself, but it might also be possible to react to cc if the company...
  25. Yum! I make homemade tortillas and use them as pita bread or flat bread. For future reference, Mission Corn tortillas are gluten free and work well for enchiladas if you heat them before rolling. There's nothing like homemade though. I even bought a tortilla press to make them thinner.
