ARCHIVED If Turkeys Can Have Gluten, Can Chicken?
GlutenFreeManna replied to sahm-i-am's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, but it is rare. Some frozen chicken is injected with broth and the broth could have barley in the "natural flavors". They have to declare if the broth has wheat in the US and I have not yet seen one with wheat. I try to buy fresh chicken only for this reason. I buy it fresh and freeze it. I'm not sure about beef. I've never seen beef with flavor... -
ARCHIVED When Did They Lose Their Manners?
GlutenFreeManna replied to Nor-TX's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm only 30, but I notice this too and I have to be honest, I have struggled with not interupting people when they are talking. I think it has to do with the speed of technology and also the blending of people from different backgrounds. I grew up in the midwest/northeast but my husband grew up in the south and we have lived in the south for over ten years... -
ARCHIVED Daycare Meals That Wont Break The Bank!
GlutenFreeManna replied to 027daisy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Corn and rice are the cheapest gluten free grains and they are verstile as far as recipes go. Grits could be something else that would make a cheap breakfast. If snacks need to have grains too then you could do popcorn, puffed rice cereal, chex cereals, etc. Oats are probably the next cheapset grain, but they are heavily contaminated by wheat and for most... -
ARCHIVED I Havent Gone Gluten Free Yet, Cause Im Pregnant
GlutenFreeManna replied to jesifromthebloch's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi, have you had a test for celiac or do you suspect gluten intolerance? The gluten free diet is not really for losing weight, although some people do lose weight on it. Some people also gain weight eating gluten free. You really should have a celiac panel blood test first if you suspect gluten is making you sick. As far as pregancy goes, many people... -
ARCHIVED Daycare Meals That Wont Break The Bank!
GlutenFreeManna replied to 027daisy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
For breakfast could you use one of the gluten free cereals like Rice Chex or Corn chex? They are mainstream enough that you may be able to find them in bulk at some place like SAM's Club. I have a BJ's Warehouse membership and I have seen Chex cereals there. For snacks, depends on age of the kids: apple slices, baby carrots and dressing, jello, pudding... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Seasoning
GlutenFreeManna replied to MacieMay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just made one yesterday seasoned with just kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper and a splash of red cooking wine. I put potatoes, onion and carrots on the bottom of the crock pot, put the roast on top, seasoned it and cooked for about 8 hours on low. If you are looking for crock pot recipes try the 365 crockpot blog. Here's one she did: Open... -
ARCHIVED So I Am Quite Proud Of Myself...
GlutenFreeManna replied to Rowena's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You go girl! I was actually really excited when I could do the dishes and laundry again. And I always hated doing dishes. I guess getting sick gives us a whole new perspective. -
ARCHIVED Help With gluten-free On A Budget

Here's General Mill's gluten free product list: Open Original Shared Link With the exception of the gluten-free Bisquick and the gluten-free cake/cookie/brownie mixes, everything is the same price as their non-gluten free varieties. -
ARCHIVED Another "wrong" Diagnosis?
GlutenFreeManna replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Also I want to say that not all brands of soy milk are gluten free. I worked in a large chain coffee shop for a while and although we usually used the same brand of soy milk, sometime we ran out and had to go purchase some before our shipment came in. I know Starbucks does the same thing because they would sometimes buy milk or syrup flavors from us when... -
ARCHIVED Another "wrong" Diagnosis?
GlutenFreeManna replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You friend sounds very uneducated about celiac and gluten intolerance. Especially if she still eating donuts! She may well be a diagnosed celaic and have no physical reactions to the gluten when she eats donuts, but that doesn't mean she should continue to eat them. She is doing damage to her body even if she has no reactions. The fact is that 20% of... -
ARCHIVED When Just Being In A Restaurant Makes You Sick
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not hiding it from them, but other than the issue of meeting at Panera there has not been an opportunity to tell a lot of people. Like I said I am NEW to this group. I haven't gotten to know very many people yet. They have had some church picnics in the park where everyone brought their own food. I wasn't out of place with my packed gluten free lunch... -
ARCHIVED When Just Being In A Restaurant Makes You Sick
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Most of them don't know about my gluten issues. So far only the pastor, his family and a few other people in the church know because I had to make arrangements for taking communion. I am new to this group and new to this city I'm living in. They are not inviting me to be rude or even thinking about it being an issue for me (because they don't know). Some... -
ARCHIVED When Just Being In A Restaurant Makes You Sick
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks everyone for your responses. I am super sensitive to CC. Maybe I will try again without buying anything. I can't think of anyplace else for them to meet so I'm not going to make a suggestion for now. I know the reason they go to Panera is so that people don't have to spend a lot of $$ on food or drinks and they can stay to talk as long as they... -
ARCHIVED When Just Being In A Restaurant Makes You Sick
GlutenFreeManna posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The women's Bible study at my church meets at Panera Bread about every other week. I thought I could handle just going and getting coffee or tea. I was super careful. I got there early so I could choose a table without crumbs. I wiped down my chair and the table with lysol wipes and then cleaned my hands. I was careful not to touch things and not to... -

ARCHIVED What's Equivalent To Refrigerated French Dough Bread
GlutenFreeManna replied to Carin3's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Is this the tin you are using: Open Original Shared Link If that's it I would think it would be very hard to clean to make sure there's not gluten in the scallops. It's on sale for just $2 right now. I would get another one for gluten free stuff. If you don't have time to replace it then I would do something else like get some gluten free crackers and... -
ARCHIVED I'm Miserable. :-(
GlutenFreeManna replied to nikelodeon79's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
nickelodeon, you posted over a month ago. Do you still have morning sickness? I'm not pregnant, but when I get nausea I have found the only thing that helps me is ginger ale and ginger cookies. Pamelas makes an awesome ginger cookie with almonds. Best thing for an upset stomach. I hope the rest of your pregnancy is less difficult. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Or Gluten Intolerance
GlutenFreeManna replied to enolah's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Is she required to have a meal plan and eat in the cafe? I have seen many people post about how difficult it is and how limited their diet is when they try to eat in the dorm cafe even if they have a dr note that they have celiac. If she can skip the meal plan you might instead get her a fridge and a microwave and have her do all her own food. She can... -
ARCHIVED Ack! Pizza's Not Gluten Free!
GlutenFreeManna replied to srall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, my. I wonder what she thinks gluten is? I would have told her pizza is not gluten free so she doesn't think she can scrap off the cheese or order a cheeseless pizza for your DD. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Like Being Celiac
GlutenFreeManna replied to runningcrazy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Some days I like it, some days it's a nightmare. Just depends on the situation and my mood I guess. I like being healthy. I like cooking. I like trying new foods. I don't like the inconvience. I don't like the social limitations. I REALLY don't like that the smallest amount of CC can make me sick for close to a week. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Know Why Tamales Would Make Me Sick?
GlutenFreeManna replied to crampy girl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry, I'm not sure I understand. In your first post you said you have been really careful to be gluten free. Did you eat the bread before you started trying to be gluten free? I didn't have bad stomach-related reactions to regular bread before I went gluten free either. I became much more sensitive to gluten (AKA wheat, rye, barley) after I was 100%... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Pneumonia
GlutenFreeManna replied to Mango04's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is an old thread, but I wanted to bring this topic up again. Last month I had brochitus that now has turned into walking pneumonia. The same thing happened to me about four years ago. the only difference is four years ago I was not gluten free and I was in the hospital with full out pneumonia. This time I have been gluten free for ten months and the... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Know Why Tamales Would Make Me Sick?
GlutenFreeManna replied to crampy girl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Not all Masa corn flour is 100% corn flour. Some brands are mixes of corn and wheat. And even if the only ingredients listed are corn, then it could have been processed on the same equipment as wheat flour. I had a bad reaction to a bag of masa flour that was just corn. When I contacted the company I found out it was processed on the same lines as wheat... -
ARCHIVED Any Reality Tv Fans Out There?
GlutenFreeManna replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I bet they would have gluten free things to tempt the person that's gluten free. The vending machine could have snickers and fritos which are both mainstream items that don't have any gluten in them. I used to watch Extreme Make-over, Home edition. I wish they would bring it back. At least on that show they send the family away so if a family member... -
ARCHIVED Elimination Diet
GlutenFreeManna replied to glutengal's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm not a doctor nor a nutritionist, however the theory behind doing an elimination diet is to cut out foods that are making you sick. You should be eating protein, vegetable, and starch at the very least. You get your nutritients from these foods unless your body is so damaged it can't get nutrients from food or you have an intolerance to one of your trial...
