ARCHIVED How Do Be Safe In A Non-gluten-free House
love2travel replied to redheadsmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That is a perfect situation in which to use them! -
ARCHIVED Pimp My Fridge!
love2travel replied to thleensd's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Many leftovers are technically improved upon resting overnight such as Beef Bourguinon, chili con carne, pulled pork, etc. These are all easy to make in large batches. I am a big fan of these types of leftovers. When I have risotto left over I make arancini out of it. Chili will likely be heaped onto corn tortillas and baked with cheese/scallions. Leftover... -
ARCHIVED How Do Be Safe In A Non-gluten-free House

I totally agree. It is not worth the risk! I bought toaster bags to take along with me when my husband and I travel (i.e. self catering). They can be used 50 times each and there are four to a bag for maybe $5-$7. Pretty cool if you have Udi's bread and crave toast! -
ARCHIVED Diary Free Probiotic
love2travel replied to organicmama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oh, sorry! For some reason I thought it was DF and SF. I must have been thinking about another of my Jamieson supplements. This must make it extra tough and frustrating for you! -
ARCHIVED Diary Free Probiotic
love2travel replied to organicmama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I use Jamieson but I believe it is a Canadian product. I just started it a few days ago and am afraid it is making me quite ill. Hopefully this will pass! -
Hmmmmm....I think that may be pushing it. Will have to consult with the other Haven't-been-to-Starbucks-ever club members and let you know.

ARCHIVED When You First Went Gluten Free, Did You Lose Weight?
love2travel replied to Prezwilson15's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
When I first went gluten-free (prior to my gluten challenge) I gained weight as I was in panic mode and ate weird processed things I normally would not such as potato chips. Then I went back on gluten for my challenge and after my celiac diagnosis in February have lost a few pounds but need to lose more. I do not eat processed junk and must work hard to... -
ARCHIVED Opinions On Black Diamond Cheese
love2travel replied to Newtoitall's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I cannot recall the brand names (one was French) and we do not have any left in the fridge. Next time I see one I will write it down. They are rare cheeses, though, definitely not available in grocery stores. One I saw was in Italy I think. -
I have not had any coffee since my university days. Blech! I'd rather buy an interesting ingredient such as black fermented garlic or vanilla beans for the same price.

ARCHIVED What Good Things Have Happened To You Since Being Gluten Free
love2travel replied to Newbee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been strictly gluten-free for five months and feel no physical improvements except I believe my mega dose of magnesium is helping with calf cramps. I also have other health issues that cause a lot of pain. But I feel good knowing that I am treating my body better (as I should have been all along!). So, I have learned a lot mentally! -
ARCHIVED Hard To Believe What Ive Become
love2travel replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My life has changed since my celiac diagnosis as well but in many positive ways (not physical yet but hopefully that is coming). It has taught me a lot about myself and others. It has forced me to be introspective and see some things I need to change in my life. As I also suffer from severe debilitating chronic pain it can be very hard to cope on a daily... -
ARCHIVED What Level Of Sensitivity To Trace Amts Is This?
love2travel replied to sreese68's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
CC makes me paranoid. Nearly OCD in a way. I am the strictest celiac I know (in person, not on these boards because most of us are VERY strict!). As I have been asymptomatic as far as GI symptoms go it is difficult because I do not know yet whether I have been glutened. (I was once accidentally a few months ago but did not get sick at all. I only found... -

Some gourmet cheeses imported from Europe can contain gluten. -
ARCHIVED Low Sodium Cooking Tips?
love2travel replied to kareng's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I make my own low/no salt spice/herb blends all the time so if you are interested in that I can post several ideas. Fresh herbs and lemon juice really go a long way in adding flavour without sodium. -

Traditional pesto contains extra virgin olive oil, a touch of coarse salt, garlic, basil, pinenuts and Parmesan BUT you can make it without the cheese. I make many versions including sundried tomato, kale, arugula, mint, sage, rosemary...you can also substitute other nuts such as toasted walnuts for the pine nuts. I've taught an entire cooking class on... -

I prefer grainy, too. Many recipes actually recommend sitting in the pantry for a couple of months to mellow prior to putting it in the fridge but some don't. This is one of my favourites - I keep it nice and chunky. http://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/golden-yellow-mustard And others... http://www.food.com/recipe/homemade-mustard-37981 http://www... -

I make quite a large variety of flavours - will look some up and post. The one you describe is pretty typical but can be quite sharp. Did you allow it to sit for the flavours to mellow a bit? Do you like grainy mustards or smooth? -
ARCHIVED Coffee Cake With Spicy Topping
love2travel replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hate to say this but this recipe intrigues me more than the previous one. I guess I just like the texture that sour cream adds. This one looks more interesting and substantial. I'm hungry again, darn it! -
ARCHIVED Coffee Cake With Spicy Topping

Great! I think I read that you made some recently. Love it. It would go well with something cinnamon-y. Heck - it would go well with everything except perhaps steamed Brussels sprouts! -

Change of plans. We WERE going to have something fabulous but it is too hot to sear/roast duck breast. So, we're grilling burgers to go with toasted Udi's buns. We'll have homemade mustard, ketchup, garlic aioli and nectarine caramelized onion jam I made last year to go with them. Mustard coleslaw. Watermelon granita again! -
ARCHIVED Coffee Cake With Spicy Topping

I've never tried Earth's Balance but don't want to! Do you clarify your butter to skim off the milk solids? Unfortunately butter is the main reason why buttercream is just so darned good. Whipping the butter just cannot be replicated (although as I said I have not tried EB so who knows??). Perhaps this would be an ok substitute. The following... -

Sure! Note that I double the amount of lime juice (I love tart flavours) OR use some grapefruit juice and also add a few fresh mint or basil leaves to the simple syrup while it is cooking). http://homecooking.about.com/od/dessertrecipes/r/bldes97.htm I just love granitas. They are so terribly easy to make! Strawberry is one of my favourites. -
ARCHIVED Coffee Cake With Spicy Topping
love2travel replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The only possibility is cinnamon. The recipe name is quite misleading! I've made Spicy Chili Chocolate Brownies and Black Pepper Shortbread and they had a wonderful kick but cinnamon is technically not spicy but a warm spice. If you do decide to go the nutmeg route I would recommend buying them whle and grating. SO superior to powdered! They are very... -
ARCHIVED Probiotics Side Effects?
love2travel replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
After reading about the virtues of probiotics here I decided taking them four days ago, too, to help heal my gut (was on three rounds of antibiotics in 2011 for emergency root canals and pneumonia). However, I have severe debilitating diarrhea and the only thing that I have changed in my diet is that. Hopefully this does not last much longer! Does anyone... -
