I have been making this dessert torte for years and it is better than any flourless cake I've ever had. It is also OK for passover since it has NO flour or leavening. It is a huge hit with anyone, gluten free or not. For those folks not lactose intolerant. Flourless Chocolate Cake from the William Sonoma guide to Good cooking 10 oz. bittersweet chocolate...

Agreed, I was also diagnosed by bloodwork and +biopsy by a GI. No follow up by him needed but you need follow up the same as anyone without celiac. Depending on age: annual lipid panel, CBC, electrolytes. in some cases thyroid function, bone densitometry for osteoporosis (ages 50 +). This is follow up by your primary. Treatment is only the diet so nothing...

ARCHIVED What Changes Happen After Diagnosis?
Tina B replied to happylittlemama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Once the severe iron deficiency anemia went away the energy was back up. No more mouth ulcers once a month, no more GI symptoms, bad indigestion, diarrhea, constipation. Hair quality improved and so did skin. A lot of the vague stuff like paper thin nails are all related to the malabsorbtion of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Have not been anemic since... -

Creme Brulee is gluten free. i have it in restaurants when it is on the menu. YUM! -
I believe this article about Gatorade will answer your question. Their starch source is corn. Open Original Shared Link
-
I've seen it on things like yogurt etc. If it doesn't tell the source I wouldn't use it.
-
Most labels that say modified food starch will have the source right after it ie: from corn, from wheat, from rice. Don't use any that says from wheat.

My husband is an internist and has diagnosed quite a few people who had no GI symptoms but the common symptom was an iron deficiency anemia that did not respond to iron replacement. Whenever he has a patient with an iron deficiency anemia and no cause of bleeding he checks for celiac.

Tina B replied to Wheatfreedude's topic in Sports and Fitness
Omega Mint by Nutramax. I was at a primary care conference a few years ago and the rep was there with samples. It's great for those who have trouble with it repeating with reflux because it is min flavored and you don't get the fishy taste later. Open Original Shared Link -
5' 4" didn't have a chance for tallness. Everyone in my family is short :-)

ARCHIVED Can I Trust Air Canada
Tina B replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't trust it. I did it once and they were terrible and then someone told me you can order a fruit plate which is what a lot of people who keep kosher do. The next time i flew on a long flight I brought crackers and snacks and had the fruit plate. -
Why not just get a Britta pitcher?

ARCHIVED Only Celiac In My House
Tina B replied to polarbearscooby's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Exactly, it's always hard when it's new. I'm the only one in my house and it isn't even an issue anymore. Any group meals are gluten free and for my own lunches etc. I do my own thing. My sandwiches are on my bread and they make their on their bread. I wouldn't put my bread down an a cutting board that their was lying on but I always just put it on a plate... -

Hebrew National are gluten free. They do contain soy but for those that only need worry about gluten they are great. So is the knockwurst. -
Love your attitude!!!! It's exactly how I feel. Even my husband says the whole family eats healthier and have tried things we might not otherwise have discovered like Quinoa and buckwheat Kasha. My sons are grown now but when they were young and went out, no McDonalds because of mom so we went to nice restaurants where there would be choices for me. Now my...

ARCHIVED Label Reading For Newly Diagnosed Child
Tina B replied to Grace'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Once you get familiar with what to look for you don't necessarily need the label "gluten free". when my boys were young they would read the labels on their haloween candy when they got home and make a little pile for MOM. Too cute :-) -

ARCHIVED Carnegie Deli, Dallas Bbq In Nyc
Tina B replied to OBXMom's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Been there twice. Once had an omelette, no toast and another time one of the salads, hold the croutons. Had no problems. They have tons of salads and omelettes on the menu. If the hotel includes breakfast, most we have stayed at in NY offer a continental breakfast but it isn't only bagels and danish. They all had yogurts, instant oatmeal and fruits on the... -
Love stuffed grape leaves in greek restaurants.

It depends on what kind of broth is used t make it. Some chicken broths have added wheat gluten. When making it at home I always use Pacific broth. It is labeled gluten free.

ARCHIVED What Type Of Doctor Do You See Regarding Your celiac disease?
Tina B replied to glutenexpat's topic in Doctors
Once the diagnosis is made the only treatment is the gluten free diet. The only follow up is with a GOOD primary for usual screenings ie: lipid panel, if 50 or more bone densitometry, and my primary also adds thyroid function to annual blood work. Part of annual is H&H anyway which checks for anemia. I did have bone densitometry at 45 due to celiac and... -

One of the oldest natural remedies is ginger tea or ginger capsules. Just check for fillers. Ginger has also been used to treat motion sickness. -
I've done mexican wih no problem. Be very careful that what you order says "corn tortilla" and not flour tortilla. I've had no problem with tacos with the hard shell and tostadas with the corn tortillas. Don't do soft tacos, they have wheat in the shell. I also don't eat the refried beans (only because they look too soft like something could be mixed in)but...

ARCHIVED Best Flour For Stews, Fried Chicken, Etc
Tina B replied to j9n's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
PS: You don't need to add the thickener after. If I'm making stew I throw all of the beef cubes in a clean ziploc bag, sprinkle in the white corn flour, zip and shake. Voila, evenly coated. :-)
