  4. i had so much trouble seeing at night, (especially if raining!) that i gave up driving at night - what a pain! even if i was 10 minutes away from my home, i left before it was too dark for me to drive home. i am 3 years gluten free (celiac dx) and i have just regained my vision and confidence to drive at night. i even drove home at midnight in the rain...
  5. thank you! and i feel a little better about my 'jar failure' lolz - am getting ready to salt some cukes for bread & butter pickles. i have never had a problem with these (husband's grandma's recipe and have made them every year for 25 yrs), so it will soothe my canning ego haha sugar cane! i am so jealous........ molokai island! i am so jealous...

  7. i agree. and if i'm trying to figure out what's bothering me, i do the (boring) elimination diet. like you said, eat the same thing (plain) and add in your suspect food and see what you are reacting to. 20 blocks! that's awesome! and that was a good day it's pretty early in, you are bound to have some good ones and bad ones (sometimes, seemingly...
  8. this topic is a couple of years old - manufacturers change their ingredients - always read the label
  9. coolness!!! our own resident canning guru!! ok. yeah, i used 5% vinegar - cider vinegar, though. and kosher salt, sugar, etc - here's the recipe i used - Open Original Shared Link i was thinking it took so long to fill the jar (i was trying to make them all standing up to look nice) that maybe the glass got too cold. i have ever had any...
  10. YOWZA! that's alot - i'm always afraid they are going to bang together and break. husband is fearless, maybe that's why he's handy to keep around when piling jars in. i have ever stacked them, though, but then i put on the timer and go hide LOLZ
  11. Open Original Shared Link that's the recipe i used, but there are a million on the interwebs. pretty basic - salt, water, garlic, dill, cukes <kirbys! if you get the brine right (my grammy used to say: make it taste like the ocean! lolz old hungarian recipes) you could certainly do a small batch. i used fresh dill because i have some in my herb...
  12. LOLZ ! killjoy..... although, we do evaluate holiday weekends as 'successful' when nobody goes to the e.r., jail or morgue, so you are on the right track it's going to be rainy all day, on & off - the river is probably over the fire pit and we are not camping in the muck. i think the wild blackberries are ready to be picked and it's only going...

  16. well, it's supposed to rain here until friday (yay) so all our outdoor activities are a bust! except blackberry picking; we can do that rain or shine (so long as it's not thunder & lightning) we have about a half acre covered in wild blackberries and we have a thingy that will remove the seeds and leave just the juice and pulp, so i will be 'jamming...
  17. enlighten me, addy - i thought mincemeat was (gag) raisins and nuts that my mother-in-law makes into pie...... i would probably like it if it had no raisins and meat!
  18. pounds of pressure of steam, makes the temp in the canner higher than boiling. did you get a new dehydrator (or new plastic trays) when you went gluten-free? ours has been used for teriyaki deer jerky in the past and i'm sure it had (wheat) soy sauce in the marinade
  19. get the 'ball blue book' aka the bible of canning lolz - mine is dog eared (and probably smells like vinegar haha) it has step by step and pretty foolproof recipes. i started out there and now i experiment with all kinds of stuff. some of the recipes on the internet are pretty good, some give 'bad' canning advice. i watched a cooking demonstration on a...
  20. seriously - oral epsom salts - not good for a sensitive digestive system. are you doing this under medical supervision. dr. de mento doesn't count.
  21. tacos!! corn tortilla shells and you already have beef - you can season it yourself with some chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder and cumin maybe some tomato paste if you like it that way (i just use plain, the salsa adds enough tomato-yness) cheese (or not) lettuce, salsa ta-daaa!! i have ever made (gluten-free) spaghetti tacos for the grandkids...
  22. i may be early for alot of other parts of the world, but our growing season is pretty long and we are already getting killed by an overabundance of beans, zucchini, yellow squash, (my beets are probably ready to harvest but i am afraid to look lolz!) and i have had 2 cherry tomatoes turn ripe. so. here it comes!!!!! the dreaded pressure canner haha...

  24. look in the cooking and baking forum - maybe you will find some ideas - or post your own thread about lunch ideas for kids we have a bunch of people on here who like to play with their food! you will do fine feeding them, it's just a little much in the beginning. and there's no such thing as an 'unnecessary rant' around here - all rants are valid...
