The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Marilyn R replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
LOL, Sylvia! I've wished you could just take a food pill, never thought of a 30 lb. bag of human food! Bearing that in mind, I wasn't in the mood to cook tonight. This is wierd, but it worked. Grilled chicken breasts with Indian Tandori rub, white rice, and the left over navy bean soup I cooked this weekend. Had the soup over the rice, which sounds... -
Sorry, Irish, I'm not going to be able to come up with a link for that article. It was written by a registered dietician, posted on a RD website. I had one copy of the article (which was printed by my friend) and gave it to another friend that has Graves Disease. That was a couple of months ago. The letter from Bayer reminded me about that article.

ARCHIVED Insensitive Family Members
Marilyn R replied to smc's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't know if this will help anyone or not. I usually show up late for family events and leave first. Last in - first out. If I bring a dish, I have a separate container for myself that I know won't be contaminated. Today, I was tempted to eat the fruit salad, but I weighed the costs. I didn't know who had dipped what into the salad, what knife... -
ARCHIVED Does Daughter Have Celiac Disease?
Marilyn R replied to stanleymonkey's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
OMG! It sounds like it to me but I'm not a doctor. Have you and her father had genetic testing? I know that the protein in gluten is similar to that of egg and dairy (and soy and corn), so your little girl may react to gluten too. Has she had allergy testing? Sending prayers and good wishes your way...happy Mother's Day! Let us know what... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Marijuana. Also Ne1 W/ Bad Smell?
Marilyn R replied to tguy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Tguy, Smoking marijuana should not impede your recovery. It's from a different plant family (hemp vs. grains). And there are still some grains that you can eat, like all the rices and buckwheat. Some of use can eat Gluten Free Oats and some can have quinoa. If your family and friends are telling you that you don't smell, I'd trust them.... -
I've tried a number of calcium supplements. My doctors kept telling me that calcium couldn't make me sick! But they did! I've been doing fine with Citracal with D, even though this is the (cover their rear-end) response they sent me when I inquired about gluten-free/SF/DF status: "Thank you for taking the time to contact Bayer HealthCare...

ARCHIVED Symptoms?
Marilyn R replied to nancy830's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Nancy, Welcome to the forum and I'm sorry you're feeling so bad! To answer your question, 'd' is not always a symptom of a gluten reaction. There are an amazing number of reactions to gluten for people who have celiac disease or are sensitive to gluten. Just because you don't have 'd' doesn't mean you didn't have a reaction to gluten. Some... -

ARCHIVED Diagnosed Today - Need Help Please!
Marilyn R replied to samuella's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So everything other than fruit and veg need to be double-checked?! I'll never eat again! Heh. What about things like canned tomatoes. My can says "tomatoes, tomato juice, salt, calcium chloride, may contain citric acid". Do I need to worry about that? I'm also thinking of things like dried lentils and dried or canned beans (have already read about issue of... -
It's tough to get into a routine of packing your lunch and snacks, but it gets easier, and you'll ultimately feel so much better! Your best investment in improved health is to cook extras of foods that work for you, and freeze them. If you have a microwave at work, that's great. If not, a good thermos is a worthy investment. I bought and/or recyled...

ARCHIVED My Story And Celiacs
Marilyn R replied to UpbeatPete's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Pete! Thank you for sharing your experience. Are you living on or off campus? At first it seems pretty overwhelming to go gluten-free, and you'll miss certain foods, but it's so worth it to finally know, and be able to eat foods that won't hurt you. And the gluten-free diet gets easier! Did the rest of your first degree relatives get... -
Cleveland Clinic or Mayo Clinic are two I'd suggest. I think Cleveland Clinic is closer to you...the closest Mayo Clinic is in Jacksonville, about four hour's drive time, possibly more. Good luck!

ARCHIVED How Do You Find Recipes Online?

Oops, I have a few typos on my post. Hit the "f" vs the "r" for "or" vs. "of". Sorry. -
ARCHIVED How Do You Find Recipes Online?
Marilyn R replied to vegoutpittsburgh's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
It depends on what I'm cooking. If it's pancakes, I search for gluten-free pancakes of gluten-free Buckwheat pancakes, of gluten-free Potato Pancakes... If it's for recipes involving protein, I search for cuisine that I love, like Thai, Vietnamese or Indian. If I just returned from the farmers market with beets, I just search beet recipes. Going... -
ARCHIVED Best Stand Mixer?
Marilyn R replied to MichaelJacksons#1Fan's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I love my Kitchen Aid! I have a petite galley kitchen, so I keep the mixer in my home office. So ... I love the dustcover I ordered online too. The only negative I've ever heard from anyone that owns one it is that it's so heavy, and a pain to pull out of the cupboard. (But she isn't gluten-free or used to jumping through the hoops that we do.) I... -
About 8 months or so ago their was a post questioning poison ivy reactions to see if there was a link with gluten intolerance of celiac disease. It ended up, if I recall, that some people with celiac disease have reactions to poison ivy and some don't, and that may or may not mimic what happens in the general population. My mom had five children,...

ARCHIVED Liquid Diet Before Colonscopy

The best thing I drank on the day of my colonoscopy prep was the glass of water I took with .5 Xanax. It made everything easier. -
ARCHIVED I Might Be An Idiot, But I Am Desperate...
Marilyn R replied to Dee777's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Dee, I know how awful you are feeling. This is the regimine that has worked for my mother and I many times. For 24 hours, have nothing but liquids, like safe chicken broth, herbal tea (no caffeine), pedialite, water. The next day, have a banana, plain mashed potatoes made without dairy products. You can also have white rice, a peeled and sliced... -
ARCHIVED Is This Intolerance?
Marilyn R replied to hoopshype's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Numbness or tingling in feet or hands Yes! There are neurological effects for 1/10th of the people who cannot tolerate gluten according to what I've read. I'm one of them, and I have permanent nerve damage (polyneuropathy) because I never associated my problems with gluten. (I changed soaps and shampoos all the time hoping to find the answer to all... -
ARCHIVED Seafood, Fish Recipes
Marilyn R replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We had this tonight and it was very good. I'm not good at writing recipes, so I'll just tell you about this fish curry. Heat 1 T. sunflower oil over MH heat in a 2 qt. stainless steel saucepan. Add one small chopped onion. Stir-fry the onion for about 5 minutes until gold in color. Add 1 chopped serrano pepper or other chili pepper and stir-fry for...
