  1. To answer your question about salicylates- you will have to determine what level of sals you can eat per day by trial and error to get a sense for your degree of sensitivity. Mine seems to change...so be prepared for that. Probably has to do with how much of Sal containing food I am eating. Here is one more thing. People who are sensitive to SA are usually...
  2. I'm wondering what your reaction is. Spinach happens to be high in salicylates and some other fruits and vegetables are too. This reaction could cause dizziness, nausea, D, anxiety/depression, headache and other symptoms associated with SA reactions. I had to cook all vegetables really well in the beginning and still did NOT do well with starchy veggies...
  3. Now, let's just hope they only give him bread and water for the whole 9 years.
  4. I struggle with having no appetite at all. I never want to eat. I know it was really bad in the beginning and now it is still an effort to eat. If I did what I wanted I would only eat once a day. BUT my body needs to heal and needs energy to do that. So I started making myself eat a measured amount of nuts in the morning. A chicken breast for lunch and some...
  5. My son has been gluten free for 6 months but today he showed me a large painful canker sore he is dealing with. I don't know...I thought they were gluten related but he is very very careful...didn't think he had gotten any gluten. ? What the heck do you do about them?
  6. I believe vegetables can cause sulphuric gas. You said you are mostly vegetarian...and only eat chicken or fish 2 times a month. I would explode on that. I do the exact opposite and eat mostly meat, chicken, and fish and eat vegetables one or two times a month! Ah! See how different we all are? I rarely have gas..and never...
  7. Hi guys, I'm very interested in this thyroid information. Why is Armour so much better than Synthroid? If you don't mind me thyroiding in on your thread, you guys are great and I want your opinions. I have an enlarged thyroid (I hate the word goiter ) I got an ultrasound but no results yet. My Hashimoto's antibodies were 63.1 with an...
  8. My bottom line is to avoid anything on shared lines except... chocolate. Seriously, my protein shake turned out to be "make in a facility that also processes wheat." So I instantly ditched it and found another. But when it comes to chocolate I will try it...on the holidays...just a lil treat now and then. If I react to something....then...
  9. I am on a budget too and didn't want to experiment a lot. I only use Almond Flour and sometimes a little coconut flour. I rely on Elana's Pantry recipes almost exclusively. She is perfect for me. Simple straight forward recipes that always turn out for me. I bought her book too and I don't regret it. When I get more time and money I might branch out...
  10. Oh yes, there is a VERY strong link between the two. There are thyroid medicines to control it. Sometimes the Hashimoto antibodies go down after you have been gluten free for a while. There is a Thyroid thread here and CassP knows a lot about thyroid. There are a few other experts here too. I just wanted to let you know it is common. I was tested yesterday...
  11. Good point about the latex. DH can come and go. If that is what it is. Yes, it can just burn like acid and not itch, that is the way mine was. Does it ever "weep" or ooze or look like watery blisters? Even teeny tiny blisters? That would be consistent with DH. BUT it has numerous presentations, so if it gets better going gluten free, you might watch your...
  12. I had 100 lb weight gain too! You will be feeling so much better in just a few weeks. I lost 80 of it in 7 months. Whew! And yes, you should go to medical school! We need Dr.'s like you.
  13. I don't want others to provide me food. If they do, they are thoughtful, but then I'm scared to eat it for cross-contamination concerns. So I decided to just bring my food. You know....they are kinda damned if they do and damned if they don't. If somebody tried to cook gluten free or bring you a gluten free cake would you actually eat it? Or would you then...
  14. Welcome Dmdavis, I am glad you finally found out what is wrong. I try to educate everyone I can about Celiac young and old alike. I just try not to be obnoxious about it but I say, Check it out on Celiac.com...and see if you have it too! Like the commercial Got Milk? They have a T-shirt Got Celiac? no kidding. Anyway, welcome to feeling better and...
  15. Sorry you had that experience it really sucks when you are sick and no one believes you. I had Neurological, Dermatological, and Gastrological symptoms as well as Thyroid problems. The Dr. sent me to a Psychiatrist for depression, the Psychiatrist said, you need a Dr. The Dr. said go to a Dermatologist, the Dermatologist said you have neurotic excoriation...
  16. Meg, You are an Angel! How wonderful of you to take the time to find out about this and to want to learn! I am very impressed. If these episodes are happening to him very frequesntly then he may need to learn more about Cross Contamination just as you say. I was sick for 7 years and then my ex divorced me and now I want to date. How ridiculous it seems...
  17. Some people say it does help them with the inflammatory response. Pepto Bismol also works for some people and it contains salicylates. The only thing I would caution you is that some people have Salicylic Acid Sensitivity or Intolerance and that would give you a headache, irritability, and actually CAUSE more inflammation in your body. Not many people know...
  18. I have and it was when I was experiencing severe headaches and took Ibuprofen on a regular basis. It lasted for years until I found out about salicylic acid intolerance or sensitivity. It can cause irritability and constant rebound headaches. If you are allergic to aspirin you will react to Ibuprofen. You could have withdrawal headaches on eliminating...
  19. My son had "severe asthma" all his life. But his lung function tests were always normal. Yet he suffered from breathing problems and was on inhalers and steroids and antibiotics all his life. They helped very little. He had no energy. It has all "magically" disappeared since he went gluten free. He went without gluten for 4 days then ate a pizza. His reaction...
  20. I used to be paranoid to read the forum because I thought it WAS a chat room!! I'm not that tech savvy and I didn't know the difference between a forum and a chat room...Probably gluten paranoia had me back then, but I ain't scared of y'all no more....so I'd be in!
  21. I have it all when I am glutened. My DH sores hurt, I get despair, depression, anxiety, Diarrhea, nausea, migraines, fatigue and sleepiness beyond fatigue...I can't describe it. I cannot possibly eat...so I fast...and try to sleep it off. When I got really careful about CC it happened WAY less. I had a hard time believing CC could do all of that to...
  22. Hi and Welcome! And YES all of your symptoms are Celiac related...gaining weight IS a common symptom....they just don't know or believe it yet, but there are a lot of people here who had it. I wonder about your Thyroid. Thinning hair....weight gain...Hashimoto's is closely related to Celiac also. Inability to lose weight...several of your symptoms seem...
  23. I fast when glutened...only drink water until all symptoms have passed. Oh, and vitamins too. I have tried eating safe foods but I don't feel well at all if I have been glutened, so for me fasting 2 or 3 days works best.
  24. My son "tested" gluten after one week off of it. Ate pizza. Got violently ill. Had eaten it probably every week of his life but we didn't notice any reaction until it was out of his system for those 4 days and then re-introduced. For him it didn't take very long. When I went gluten free I could tell immediately if I even had Cross Contamination because I...
  25. I think you are absolutely right about gluten possibly causing your son's problems. My son's whole childhood disappeared in a gluten fog. I had no idea what was wrong but I knew something was terribly wrong. He was 6 when it started and 16 when I figured it out. Dr.'s refused to test him saying he didn't have classic celiac symptoms. (This was at 16 when...
