  1. You might want to honestly ask yourself how often you may have said something to your DH about her... or anyone for that matter... with the intention of your comment being kept between the two of you. Likely it has happened at some point. Let's face it, we all talk about other people, especially to our significant others, whom we SHOULD be able to trust...
  2. Thank you, thank you, thank you for that info. Just about all of the symptoms listed under Motor symptoms apply to me. I climb stairs with my arms as much as with my legs, and I always wondered about it as I am in pretty good physical shape for an overweight old lady I mean, I walk about 3 miles a day weekdays and up to 8 miles on a weekend. So...
  3. You have already received such good advise that the only thing I can do is reiterate that "It DOES get easier". Don't feel bad if your family refuses to change their diet to a gluten-free one. A metaphor I use often is "If you were in a wheelchair, would you feel bad that they still walked around you?" Fortunately, for most of us, celiac does...
  4. It does make me chuckle, sometimes, at how free we all are here in discussing a subject that most would never think to bring up outside this forum . Its nice to have a comfortable place to ask questions that we could not ask anywhere else. When I don't want to go into a litany of woes, I simply say that the long-term consequences of gluten intolerance...
  5. No, not at all. And believe me, I'm not one to give up my Krispy Kremes lightly! Indeed, I find it odd that I am able to stay on the straight and narrow when it comes to gluten, but can't keep off the sugar to save my life. I wish sugar did to me what gluten did. I'd have a bod like a super-model!
  6. I would really try to get it out of your head that its all in your head Honestly, most of us have heard that for years, often before diagnosis and many even after. And it often delays diagnosis severely. Let's face it, even the best of us get complacent, and I'll bet at 8 months in you are just begining to think you've got it down pat. Maybe...
  7. Within the hour for me, sometimes closer to 15 minutes. Mad dash to the bathroom. My niece was diagnosed as an infant, and she throws up within 5 minutes. My SIL considered it an easy way to train babysitters who thought "One little cracker won't hurt."
  8. I'm sure this is covered just about every year at this time, but I wonder if anyone had done any checking this year... Are there any national brand turkeys (you know, Butterball, Jenni-O, etc) that have been verified as gluten-free? I'll be shopping this afternoon or tomorrow, and haven't even thought to check into it yet.
  9. Sariesu beat me to it. I love to invite people over for dinner, and guests have commented after the meal that they had completly forgotten about my diet limitations while they were eating... there was nothing "different" about the dinner they were served. I just chose naturally gluten-free foods. Or bring something to tea that you CAN eat. I don't...
  10. Gemini, I don't think the issue is worrying about what what "other people" think. However, I AM concerned that anyone serving, cooking or handling my food takes this disease seriously. I have a hard enough time trusting restaurants the way it is now. Characterizing Celiac disease as a self-proclaimed eating disorder may lead a server to be less careful...
  11. Well, now, don't I feel like a cheap w****? While I don't think $150 would be worth feeling like cr@p for the next 24 hours, I think $500 would get my attention. But only if I get to pick the day and clear my schedule first. Of course, I wouldn't like that to be my steady income or anything .
  12. My heart breaks for everyone here who is feeling (or had felt) such severe depression due to their Celiac. I just found out while visiting family in California that a distant cousin had recently been diagnosed. The first thing I thought of was contacting her to let her know that it wasn't as bad as it may at first seem, and that she can probably eat...
  13. Have you considered turning it into a "positive"? When your waiter arrives, tell him politely, and without apology, that you are allergic to wheat, and then order a very simple meal (like others said, salad w/o croutons would be perfect) with confidence. Ask any questions you may have graciously, and explain any questions your waiter may have simply. ...
  14. Depends upon what you mean by "feel better". I "felt better" within days... meaning I didn't run to the bathroom after every meal. Within a couple of months, I noticed that the muscle pain (that I THOUGHT was the result of being fifty and fat) went away. Within a year, I had more energy and my emotionally outlook improved. More that two...
  15. Funny, just yesterday I said to my husband that I feel like I'm 20 again (I'm fifty-mumble mumble years old). I can't wait to get out for my usual 4 mile walk every morning before work. I have fought my weight - and an addiciton to sugar - all of my life. Now I realize that the constant hunger was the result of not getting the nutrients from the...
  16. Late to the party, but I have to ask: does putting on your seat belt every time you get in the car "define" you? Does looking both ways before you cross a street "define" you? Does locking your doors at night before you go to bed "define" you? Does eating a well balanced diet "define" you? Does getting your daily exercise in "define" you? You...
  17. NO dinner is easier at our house. Aside from my gluten intolerance, we have a diabetic, milk allergy and peanut allergy in our near relatives. However, I go out of my way to try to have enough options, so everybody can get what they like and can eat. After all, I know what its like to have a restricted diet, so I make sure people at my house always...
  18. While I didn't know I was gluten intolerant back when I was having children, my symptoms multiplied dramatically at that time. 20/20 hindsight now. Don't be surprised if you are much more sensitive than you were before.
  19. I may be going against the grain here, but if I were just recently diagnosed, and I felt I could get through the day w/o stomach (diarrhea) issues, I might just stick with the regular food program this year. Including what I eat before the trip. Then start up gluten-free in earnest immediately after. By the time it comes around next year, you will have...
  20. Dh and I have noticed that we seem to spend our entire weekends gathering (shopping for) and preparing food. Fortunately for us, we've always liked cooking, but I can't imagine how difficult it must be for someone who does not enjoy the process. Look into the concept of "Once a month cooking". While the name is a tad misleading, the concept of planning...
  21. one of my favorite "go to" meals when I know I won't be home for lunch is rice crackers and egg salad. I'll also go the chicken salad or tuna salad route. I also like carrot or celery sticks and hummus, or apple wedges and peanut butter. Crackers, sliced sharp cheddar and cranberry chutney (home made) is another treat I make.
  22. Dissenting opinion here, but then I'm decidedly low-maintenance. I let people know about my "allergy" (easiest way to explain it), but I encourage them to not give it another thought. There are many people out there who have challenges that are far more difficult to live with, making my gluten-intolerance a walk in the park, comparitively. Plus, if...
  23. When I first started eating gluten free, I felt better immediately... stomach issues, joint and muscle pain, and several other issues I did not know were even related, went away. I thought that I was "cured". However, it took up until recently (two years in) for me to realize how much better I could get. I had no idea of the extent of the damage or...
  24. It took over a year for me to actually "feel" like I'm actually getting the nutrients from my food. Kind of a "THIS is what I'm supposed to feel like!" feeling.
  25. Wish I could get my teenager to study his chemestry with the same enthusiasm.
