Thanks! I'll try one (or all) of these. And no, I tried already to move cubes, but we don't have any other available spaces. I'd have to trade, and nobody is willing to move. If I had a dr's note I'm sure I could, but just being near the food is not making me sick (as far as I know). It's more mental angst and annoyance than anything.

I haven't worked up to making cookies yet (need to find a good dairy free recipe for this). I may need to, and soon. Fave is choc chip.

Title says it all. Right now there's a giant overflowing plate of cookies directly on the other side of my cubicle wall at work (I'm adjacent to the cube that gets used as the kitchen, and the counter is up against my cube wall). Everyone keeps coming in and gushing about the cookies, and I hear it very clearly. People at my work are obsessed with...

ARCHIVED According To Recent Data, Gluten-Free Doesn't Seem To Be Enough
MJ-S replied to Gfresh404's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
With all of the studies I've seen, they talk about people "following" or "not following" the gluten free diet. Have any studies taken into consideration how strictly a person adheres to a diet? Some people have a higher risk acceptance and continue to eat out at friends' houses and restaurants, live in shared kitchens, eat processed foods with high cc risk... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free, Soy Free Protein Bars?
MJ-S replied to dmeagan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I second Larabars. My favorite is the Peanut Butter Cookie. It has 3 ingredients: Dates, Peanuts, Sea Salt. You can't beat that for simplicity. -
ARCHIVED Erewhon Brown Rice Gluten-Free Cereal
MJ-S replied to IrishHeart's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks. I got a similar response yesterday from them: "Our Erewhon Crispy Brown Rice - Gluten Free is Certified Gluten Free by GIG. The line that it is produced on is used to make other products that contain gluten - but we use good manufacturing practices to clean the line, ensuring our certification." I'd be curious what GIG certification means... -
ARCHIVED Erewhon Brown Rice Gluten-Free Cereal
MJ-S replied to IrishHeart's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Testing aside, did anyone ever find out if this cereal is produced on shared lines? -
I never said it's reversible if she has an actual fructose intolerance. Just that she should look first at the possibility that she's malabsorbing fructose due to the damage in her system and that once she heals she might have an easier time.
-
Fructose can be difficult to process, especially since your system has barely begun to heal. You may need to lay off the fructose in the short term while you are healing, but it's too soon to jump to the conclusion that you have a primary fructose intolerance (which is rare). Give it some time, chances are you may be able to tolerate larger amounts of fructose...

ARCHIVED Rice Cooker And Pressure Cooker?
MJ-S replied to Mrs. M.'s topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Alton Brown says you shouldn't own any kitchen gadget that doesn't have more than one use, and I agree with that. Helps declutter the kitchen. To that effect, I have a pressure cooker (love it) but not a rice cooker. By the way, you can cook rice in the pressure cooker - I've never done it but I have indian friends who do it all the time, so you can definitely... -
ARCHIVED Easy Gluten And Dairy Free Meals For One?
MJ-S replied to jdizzle's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I do a lot of simple comfort foods. I'm not so great with more complicated recipes. One really easy soup that's easy on a tired stomach: Potato Carrot soup Saute some onion in olive oil, then add 3 chopped potatoes, 3-4 chopped carrots, water, salt. Boil for 20-25 minutes (until tender). Use a stick blender to puree. I've also done this with sweet... -
Anyone Try Daura gluten-free Beer?
MJ-S replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just be aware that Redbridge is brewed in the same plants as regular beer, so cc could be a factor. Also, it contains corn syrup. IMO, there's no place for corn syrup in beer. -
ARCHIVED No One Will Come Over To Eat At My House
MJ-S replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How about using a lighter cooking oil, like sunflower oil? The taste shoudn't be as strong as olive oil. -
ARCHIVED Which Is Easier For You: Dairy Or Gluten Free?
MJ-S replied to JWSJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Without question, dairy. I would give anything to be able to have cheese, cheese, and cheese. It makes me sad every day. I honestly wouldn't even mind not having gluten, if only I could have dairy! But alas, I'm super sensitive to dairy and it makes me even sicker than gluten. -
ARCHIVED Your Gluten-Free Beer Might Not Be Gluten-Free - Broward-Palm Beach New Times (blog)
MJ-S replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Why doesn't the article divulge brand names? Right now, this offers no practical help for us, but I would love to know which beers tested positive for gluten. -
Anyone Try Daura gluten-free Beer?
MJ-S replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Drink Green's, if you can find it. IMO, the best gluten-free beer out there. St Peters and Bards are good as well. My husband drinks Daura because he genuinely likes it and so we don't have to worry about cc. But I've always wussed out - afraid to try it. -
ARCHIVED Dairy Reaction To Probiotics?
MJ-S replied to revenant's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm very sensitive to dairy (possibly super sensitive?) and I was getting sick with "pearls" probiotics (of course I couldn't figure out what was making me sick at the time). I'd gone through one box when they switched the labeling to remove "dairy free" (note: always check labels, even on stuff you've been using) - I contacted them and they told me that... -
Flatbread is a great place for gluten-free and vegan pizzas, and brownies! They have locations in Somerville (Davis Square), Portsmouth, Portland, and a few others. They wrap the tray in foil, and prepare and cook in a separate area. I'm very sensitive and I've been fine there. It's one of the only places I would still eat out at. They also serve Bards...

ARCHIVED I Know How To Bake Gluten Free, But Dairy Free?
MJ-S replied to BethM55's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The book Go Dairy Free, and its website, are good resources. (oops - did't read closely enough to realize this is for a friend and not you). -
ARCHIVED Book Suggestions
MJ-S replied to Nicolevh's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I recommend "Real Life with Celiac Disease". It's co-written by a dietician with celiac disease and a physician. I also read Dr. Green's book "Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic" (great primer, some info slightly out of date) and a few others, but after the initial learning curve ends, Real Life is the one I keep coming back to. It's a wonderful nutritional... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Allergy And Grain Alcohol
MJ-S replied to creesal's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Gin is generally derived from rye. I believe there are some brands derived from other sources (ie Cold River in Maine which makes potato vodka and gin) but don't know how common that is. I found this thread because I had some Sake this weekend and have not felt well since. It was a "premium" sake made from a high quality rice grain, but I didn't check... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Stink?
MJ-S replied to domesticactivist's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have the same problem with any gluten or dairy, but I can't smell it on myself, and my husband isn't very sensitive to it, but others are. I think Pepto-Bismol helps. Can I ask, why bother with a gluten challenge? For me, if a food makes me smell bad, that's reason enough to stay away from it, all other health concerns aside. -
ARCHIVED Can I Still Do Hair?
MJ-S replied to ScarlettsMommy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would think breathing in hair spray could also be an issue.
