ARCHIVED Is It Necessary To Get A Diagnosis For Suspected Gluten Ataxia?
bartfull replied to guitarlover727's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Angelique, Gluten ataxia IS celiac, manifested in the cerebellum, just as DH is celiac manifested in the skin. And it's great for you that you have no digestive symptoms, but there are quite a few folks with gluten ataxia who DO, just as SOME folks with DH get no digestive symptoms while others do.- 11 replies

Honey, I think there is a big difference between being sad and being unhappy, at least in the context of this thread. I AM happy, but of course I experience sadness. I am sad that I lost Grommit a few weeks ago. I am sad that another close friend died last week of a heart attack. I'm worried about one of my best friends who has cancer. I'm even angry...

ARCHIVED Can I Trust All "gluten Free" Labels?
bartfull replied to CeliacMommaX2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is one company I know of that makes gluten-free food in a dedicated gluten-free facility. Against The Grain. They don't even let employees bring gluten for lunch. And Ronzoni makes a gluten-free pasta that is made in a dedicated gluten-free facility in Italy. -
I think this guy is a vegetarian! He turns his nose up at canned food, he wanted nothing to do with the chicken, and he eats very sparingly of his dried food. But he loves cheese and he loves yogurt. (And he loves me. ) He is starting to talk now. If I'm in another room he comes looking for me and calling. I am totally in love with this cat!!!

ARCHIVED Can I Trust All "gluten Free" Labels?
bartfull replied to CeliacMommaX2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Companies do not have to disclose whether or not they process wheat in the same facility or equipment. You could be eating something on a regular basis that is made in the same facility and not even know it. Here's they way I handle it. Same facility? I don't worry about it. The chances of CC are tiny. As has been pointed out here many times, unless your... -
ARCHIVED Elimination Diet Timing
bartfull replied to ThisIsMyUserName's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My symptoms start at different times. Nausea within about a half hour. That is usually gone within half a day. The D starts the next day and the psoriasis flares about eight hours later. The D lasts about three weeks. The psoriasis flares for at LEAST three weeks. Hiccups start soon and last a few weeks (I get them several times a day during that time.) ... -
Yes, Grommit was the one I lost a few weeks ago. She was a sweet kitty and I had her for 16 years. I didn't think I'd be getting another kitty but it really was meant to be. I can tell that Harold had really spoiled Patches. And that's fine because I want to spoil him too. Tonight I'll be giving him some roast chicken with yogurt for dessert. And next...

I am totally in love! He eats his yogurt out of the spoon. (Doesn't want it in a dish.) And this morning while I was rubbing his belly he grabbed my hand and put it in his mouth. He bit is SOFTLY. A little "love bite".

ARCHIVED Please Help Me!
bartfull replied to Christina's.My.Name's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Christina, welcome to the forum. Do you have copies of your test results? Often they don't do the full panel. Also, and this is a biggie, people with DH very often don't show up as positive on blood tests or even the biopsies. DH is celiac manifested in the skin instead of the gut. To get tested for DH you need to find a good dermatologist and have him biopsy... -
I've got the best of both worlds. When I'm wearing light clothing I'll be covered with black kitty hair. When I'm wearing dark clothing I'll be covered with white kitty hair. And I'll wear it proudly.

So my friend Bonnie who lives in a senior housing place came in yesterday all sad because they took her friend Harold to hospice. Harold was so worried about what would become of the cat that was his whole world. Well, I said I'd go down and see. If I WAS going to get another cat I wanted an older cat who had lost her "mom". I wanted a little girl kitty with...

ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Cookies
bartfull replied to HeaJen's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Just leave a lot of space between them when you bake them because they spread out a lot. And be really careful They are so good you might eat the whole batch in one sitting! -
ARCHIVED The Fight Against Omission Beer
bartfull replied to jddh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Scott, what I would be concerned about is the fact that so many scientific articles (I posted a couple) say that the test doesn't work very well for gluten from barley. -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Cookies
bartfull replied to HeaJen's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use half a cup of brown sugar and half a cup of white. Then I roll the balls in sugar before baking. You can add a hershey kiss on top too. Or put chocolate chips in them. Or you can melt some chocolate in a double boiler and dip the baked cookies in it, then refrigerate on waxed paper. They are so good, aren't they? Everybody I've made them for prefers... -
ARCHIVED Fresh Plain Chicken Breast
bartfull replied to Tigercat17's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I THINK (but I could be wrong) the labeling law applies to FDA regulated foods but not to USDA foods. Meats are under the jusidiction of the USDA. I eat lots and lots of chicken. I buy Tyson chicken breasts with the bones still in it. Never had a problem. The stores also sell big bags with boneless chicken breasts in them but they are full of chemical...- 6 replies

ARCHIVED Elimination Diet Question - Coffee
bartfull replied to ThisIsMyUserName's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I know some folks have trouble with coffee but I have never been one of them. I'm really glad because coffee is one of my favorite things on the planet. How long have you been doing the elimination diet? I would think you should give it more time before taking the drastic step of cutting out coffee. If you feel you absolutely must give it up you could... -

ARCHIVED Annoyance With Fad Dieters
bartfull replied to c.reez's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You may very well have actual celiac. It is the endoscopy, not the colinscopy that is used for diagnosis. The doctor takes biopsies of the small intestine. And because the small intestine is so large and the damage is often spotty, he may have missed the part that was damaged. But even is what you have is gluten sensitivity, it makes sense that your symptoms... -
ARCHIVED The Fight Against Omission Beer
bartfull replied to jddh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I thought the sample I had of Bard's was pretty good for a lager-type beer. Back when I could drink I liked dark beers better. Newcastle Brown Ale was my favorite. I think I remember somewhere on this board someone mentioned a gluten-free dark beer that was really good but I don't remember what it was. I wouldn't be able to get it here in my tiny town anyway... -
ARCHIVED Some Ez Gluten Test Results And A Question
bartfull replied to Hellbender's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got my Glucosamine from Shopko. They have a line of vitamins and supplements that are free of gluten, corn, soy, sugar and a bunch of other stuff. I never got sick from any of it and you can now order them online. Look for Shopko Naturals. That being said, I got no benefit from the glucosamine. I was on it for about five months and I finally gave it... -
ARCHIVED How I Am Doing
bartfull replied to w8in4dave's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey W8in, it's good to see you! Hang in there. You've been on the diet for two years. It took me over three years to eventually get corn back so here's hoping it happens for you too. -
ARCHIVED The Fight Against Omission Beer
bartfull replied to jddh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Aha! I got it - clicked on South Dakota this time and THIS is what the message says: mission... to brew a great craft beer with traditional beer ingredients that everyone of legal drinking age can enjoy. Handcrafted beers made from barley, hops, water and yeast, brewed using a proprietary process to remove gluten. Well, mission accomplished. Here... -
ARCHIVED The Fight Against Omission Beer
bartfull replied to jddh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I went to their website. There is a map and they ask you to click on a state. Because the second article I posted says they can only make the gluten-free claim in Oregon, I clicked on Oregon. This is the first thing I read: We had a mission... to brew a great craft beer that happens to be gluten-free. Handcrafted beers made from malted barley, hops... -
ARCHIVED The Fight Against Omission Beer
bartfull replied to jddh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here is another (rather lengthy) article about barley testing. It basically says the same thing as the article I posted above but it also mentions that in Oregon where Omission beer is made, they are allowed to call it gluten-free because "local" beer labeling is regulated by the state. Once beer is shipped out of state the labeling is regulated by the feds... -
ARCHIVED The Fight Against Omission Beer
bartfull replied to jddh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have read elsewhere that testing food (or drink) for gluten is not particularly accurate when the gluten grain is barley. Here is an article from a web site I am admitedly not familiar with, although they SEEM to know what they are talking about. I think it's in the second or third paragraph about the barley.
