  1. I was REALLY ticked off this morning while listening to The Marketplace Morning Report on NPR News. They mentioned that Dunk's was coming out with a new gluten-free donut. They said that more and more people are now being diagnosed with celiac. Then they mentioned that a lot of non-celiacs have decided to go gluten-free too "because they like pastries that...
  2. Everyone is different. I don't know WHY corn bothers so many of us, but I am one who has trouble with it. After I had been completely corn-free for a year or so, I found out by accident that I could tolerate corn starch. (I couldn't at first.) Then I go glutened and lost corn starch again. It's been a few months now and I MAY be able to tolerate it again...
  3. I'll drink some for you.
  4. If there were a Dunk's here where I live I would happily be a guinea pig for you all. Although I can get their WONDERFUL coffee at the grocery store here, I SO miss their donuts!
  5. I have only been glutened once in two years. (That's because I live alone and never eat at restaurants, and I read EVERY label, EVERY time I buy something.) The time I did get glutened I got so nauseous! I never got that way before going gluten-free, but I do now. I also had D which I never got in the pre-gluten-free days.
  6. Maybe, seeing she likes to write you notes, you could interest her in starting a journal. Maybe you could do it together, almost as a game. Both of you sit at a table with your notebooks and write whatever comes to mind. At college one of my instructors had us do "five minute free writing" at the beginning of each class. If you don't have a subject in mind...

    ARCHIVED Bruises

Dermatitis Herpetiformis. It is an extremely itchy rash that some celiacs get. It is horrible. They sometimes call it "the suicide rash". There is a whole section in this forum didicated to it. You need to go there and read up on it. And you should go to the "Newbie 101" thread too. It will help you learn how to cope with going truly gluten-free. Then...

    ARCHIVED Bruises

Oh Hon, I'm sorry but there is no pill available that will make it safe for a celiac to eat gluten. I guess you are finding that out now. The bruises are probably from scratching the DH. Unfortunately, that DH can flare for up to two years even if you don't eat gluten. You should stay STRICTLY gluten-free, go easy on the iodine (because it can make DH flare...
  9. Thanks, G F! I didn't read that thread because I'm not a vegetarian or vegan. But I DO still have a lot of brain fog. I'd be willing to bet I am vitamin deficient though. I can't find vitamins without SOMETHING in them that I can't have. I do know that before all the secondary intolerances hit I was taking a multi, plus lots of B12 and biotin. For a short...

    ARCHIVED Funny

Reminds me of a Frank Zappa song: "Didja Get Any Onya?"
  11. I just looked it up on their website. It says it is "pre-washed", but of course unless something is one of the top eight allergens, they don't have to mention that it was used in processing. Corn is not one of the top eight, and "washing" is considered part of processing. Therefore they don't have to tell you WHAT they washed it with. Odds are though that...
  12. I found out there IS an Outback in Rapid City! I'm so excited!! Some Sunday soon, I'm going to close the shop early and grab a friend and go eat there. That means there are now TWO restaurants "in the area" I can eat at. Lintz Brother's pizza is only 50 miles away and Outback is 60. But both are on good road so it's only and hour or so drive to get there...
  13. You're right again, G F in DC (aka "Fartypants. ). I should have said citric ACID rather than citrus. Can I blame it on persistant brain fog? How about "not enough coffee"? Actually it's both, and it's chronic.
  14. I just point out to people that I don't need a doctor, medication, nor surgery to fix what ails me. Everybody's got SOMETHING, and most can't heal themselves the way we can.
  15. "I am trying to understand your concern about a citrus wash. Citrus is fruit. Things like those orange power cleaners and so on are made with citrus. Are you saying they add some form of corn based product to the citrus wash? That is very possible of course, but it doesn't mean the corn is citrus. Citrus doesn't come from corn. Corn is not fruit, it is a...
  16. I haven't had a salad in two years. Of course I won't eat one in a restaurant for fear of CC, and I can't eat bagged salads because of the corn-based citrus wash they use. Living alone, it is a waste to buy a whole head of lettuce that I can't use up before it goes bad. When I first started (before the corn intolerance hit me), salads gave me D. I'm not...
  17. Yeah, I keep telling my self I'm going to take a vacation but so far it's been seven years (exactly seven years yesterday as a matter of fact), with never more than one day in a row off. No, I take that back, I actually took two days off for a blizzard this past winter. It was glorious to be able to sleep in for a couple of days, but shoveling snow isn't...
  18. I went to one in Rapid City a couple of years ago before the corn intolerance hit. It was fun, yummy, and educational. Wish I could close the shop for a few days and come out, but alas, it's tourist season and I have to be here.
  19. I avoid it because I'm intolerant to corn and xanthan gum is usually grown on corn. I don't know if I would react to it if it were in something that had none of my other "poisons" in it or not. Wish I could be of more help.
  20. "I totally don't understand people asking for a bite of someone else's food. I mean, it's one thing if you are offering someone a bite, but to actually ask someone else if you can sample something they are already eating? I feel like that's rude. I can't say it's something that has ever crossed my mind to ask someone." I actually had someone ask me the...
  21. FreeMe, because yours is symetrical (on both arms, on both knees, etc.) it certainly sounds like DH. Have you been to the DH forum here? There are a bunch of great people who can help you. For instance, did you know the DH antibodies can stay in your system for up to two years? That means even if you haven't been glutened you can still break out at any time...
  22. 1) I am a self-diagnosed celiac based on family history and response to the diet. 2) It was frustrating and downright heartbreaking at first. Now that I've adjusted, it's a piece of (gluten-free) cake! 3) Being gluten-free is no different to me than having blue eyes or being tall. It doesn't define me, it's just part of living that I only think of...
  23. I just bring my own and if anyone asks, I tell them the truth. At a big gathering like that there usually isn't time to stay on one subject for long so if people asking questions bothers you, just point at one of the kids and comment on how cute he is, or look at the sky and comment on the weather, or any other distracting comment. For myself, I don't...
  24. I'd be willing to bet that he already knows the dangers he faces. He probably has already done some research on it and the diet scares him more than the possible consequences. After all, the complications are "could be's" but the diet is "must be". Ot's kind of like a smoker - we (I am a smoker) all know about the lung cancer, etc. that we might face. But...
  25. Could be anything, but I have found that when it comes to rashes, most respond to a gluten-free diet. Eczema and psoriasis both do. I have psoriasis and within days of going gluten-free it started getting better. And now if I get glutened (or corned or soyed, or too many salicylates - lucky me! I react to all of these!) the psoriasis comes back.
