  1. Eggs DO smell. If I bring a hard boiled egg to work and peel it here, the whole place smells bad for the rest of they day. They have a lot of sulpher and they smell. (But they taste so good!) I don't think there is anything wrong with you at all. As long as you aren't getting hives or any other signs of an allergic reaction, keep some Lysol spray handy...
  2. Corn. I temporarily got just corn starch back, but lost it again after a glutening. White potatoes. I don't know if I had a problem with other nightshades because I never ate them. Just recently got white potatoes back. I may try tomato sauce sometime soon. I'd love to try eggplant but I have NEVER even seen one in any of the stores or farmers markets...
  3. Humidity used to make me feel weak and shaky and sick. I don't think it was celiac related because I never had bad digestive symptoms from celiac anyway. But sometimes on a really humid day I would be so sick to my stomach I had to go home from work and kneel before the "porceline god". Now that I live here in the West, I never have that problem, although...
  4. The tourist, a confirmed and experienced celiac, was from Denver. I guess in Denver people are a lot more celiac-aware and if something is marked gluten-free, you can count on it BEING gluten-free. But one of these bakers at the market is the same lady I called a few months ago when a friend picked up a "gluten-free" muffin for me. I wasn't about to eat it...
  5. Why can't you run with ONE day's worth of lunch on you? (That's not a facetious question. I'm not a runner so I don't know if it would make a difference.) I put lunches together and stick them in a ziplock bag. I make a bunch all at once and throw them in the freezer. I'll mix rice or baked potato with meat, cheese and broccoli, for example. When I get...
  6. I just went to a farmer's market type thing right down the street from my shop. There were several vendors with baked goods for sale, quite a few of which were marked gluten-free. I questioned the people and sure enough, they were all baked in the same pans in the same kitchen with gluten foods. Some were made with regular oats. Most were even baked at the...
  7. I just saw this on the news. You haven't had any of this stuff, have you? Open Original Shared Link
  8. I am so sorry for your loss. Even a non-celiac would probably have those symptoms if they had been under the incredible strain you have been, but yes, stress can bring on the symptoms. Just last week I had a very stressful day and my psoriasis (my strongetst symptom) flared badly. I noticed some digestive issues too. Take some time for yourself when this...

    ARCHIVED Potato?

I've been gluten-free for two years and I kept trying potatoes periodically with no luck - until last week. The store here in the middle of nowhere stopped carrying the only brand of rice I could tolerate so I tried potatoes again. SUCCESS!! So yeah, stay away from them for a while, but keep trying maybe once every six months or so. You might get them...
  10. I USED to eat a whole bag every day. That's what I mean when I say I used to eat junk. Cheeseburgers and fires from a local restaurant for lunch, just about every day. To vary that, sometimes I'd get "broasted" chicken (read: pressure fried) and jo-jo's. That was after my breakfast of potato chips. Then for supper I'd throw a frozen pizza in the oven followed...
  11. It's an intolerance with me. I don't get really bad digestive symptoms, even with gluten. Gluten gives me nausea and mild D. Corn gives me no nausea, but I do get worse D. And my "I can tell for sure" symptom with either one is psoriasis. Corn makes it flare worse than gluten does. It takes about 8 hours and it flares for weeks. With gluten, my hands are...
  12. AND, if they DO eat anything containing gluten, they must drink an Ex-Lax milkshake every time!!
  13. Mmmm...Wize Potato Chips. I remember them well. They were the saltiest chips on the market and SOOOOO good!
  14. And I was in such a hurry to post it I spelled her name wrong. Sorry Adelaide!
  15. I've always wondered about that too. Maybe it's because they are sliced so thinly that frying takes all the nutrition out of them? I used to astound my friends with the wish that they could vitamin fortify them just like they do with breakfast cereals. I ALWAYS ate potato chips for breakfast back in the old days. Come to think of it, now that I have white...

  17. Mom (who had celiac) went gray almost overnight. At least it seemed that way. I can't remember now if it was before or after her celiac diagnosis. As a side note, I notice you spell it grEy. I know I must sound crazy, but I DO have a touch of synesthsia, and to me, grAy was always a bluish gray, and grEy was a more brownish grey. As a matter fo fact,...
  18. I understand how you feel. I have a friend who helped me when I was new to this. She is diabetic as well as having celiac, suffers from diabetic retinopathy (she's nearly blind), she has DH, and she just broke her foot and didn't even know it because she couldn't feel it - neuropathy I guess, whether from the celiac or the diabetes, I don't know. She...
  19. And don't be surprised if you break down and cry at the grocery store a time or two. I think most of us did at the beginning. Not only are you learning a new way to eat, but your body is going through real withdrawal which will make you more emotional than usual. It felt like the end of the world at first, but honestly, not only will you adapt, but you will...
  20. Yep. When I first went gluten-free I was eating meat, potatoes, veggies, and I would munch on fruit for snacks. And I was ALWAYS hungry! Before gluten-free, I always felt that unless I had meat, I never felt full. After gluten-free I thought it must have been the bread (I lived on burgers) that made me feel full. I suggest you eat lots of small meals...
  21. I guess it's because I am such a lousy cook that I can't be fussy, but when I realized I couldn't eat "regular" bread anymore, I went right out and bought some Udi's multi-grain and I really liked it because to me it tasted like french bread. The following week I bought the Canyon Bakehouse San Juan and loved it even more because it tastes like those multi...
  22. I'm more sensitive to corn than to anything else. Everything SensitiveMe said is true. Corn is in EVERYTHING except SOME whole foods. You'd be surprised at some of the whole foods that have corn. Bagged salad mixes or any other "ready to eat" veggies such as those peeled baby carrots. A lot of frozen veggies and fruits are dusted with corn starch to keep...
  23. ABQ, you're new here so I assume you're fairly new to gluten-free. After a while you won't miss bread at all because if you try some Canyon Bakehouse San Juan 7-grain, you'll see that it tastes BETTER than regular bread. Even my gluten eating friends agree. And if you learn to bake, you can make great tasting breads. (I admit, I have never done it, but I...

    ARCHIVED Corn

Can you take aspirin? (I can't. ) But I just googled Alka-Seltzer and found this: Open Original Shared Link It lists the active ingredients, and then if you scroll down the page you'll see the inactive ingredients. It looks safe to me. It's funny though, I didn't see regular old Alka-Seltzer on their website. But even if you have to take this stuff, it...
