  1. "You do realize what you said was, essentially, "I'm going to make possibly gluten contaminated food and serve it to gluten intolerants and when they get sick and tell me there was something wrong, I'll try to improve my contamination practices." Right??" Prickly, I didn't see anything like that. She said SHE was going to try them for taste, and she came...
  2. Vitamin deficiencies?
  3. When I had an allergic reaction to oysters (doctor confirmed), it was about eight hours. USUALLY an allergic reaction happens almost immediately but not always. OR, it could just be a coincidence and he was having an allergic reaction to something in the environment. If the epi pen helped, it must be an allergy. As far as I know epi pens do nothing for...
  4. If you Google "Elisa intolerance test scam", you will find many sites debunking such "tests". Here's just one of them: Open Original Shared Link If you want to find out which foods bother you, try an elimination diet. It takes time, but it is MUCH more reliable.
  5. It sounds to me that he is having ALLERGIC reactions rather than celiac reactions. Turning gray and having the epi pen help seem to point to that. He may also be allergic to amaranth.
  6. I went to Bermuda 40 years ago so I can't help you. But what I do remember is that there are a lot of guest houses with full kitchens that you can stay in. I imagine your family has already made reservations so unless they got a guest house you'll have to rely on restaurants. The other thing I remember is that it was so humid that when the maid came in...
  7. Clevercate, have you tried Against The Grain products? They make breads and pizza using absolutely no grains at all, yet their stuff is delicious. They are located in Vermont and their website says that even the employees are not allowed to bring anything with gluten in it for their own lunches. You could probably find some of their stuff in a local health...
  8. Icole, if the rest of the family is eating gluten, and I assume they are, you need to be very careful about cross-contamination. He needs his own toaster, and condiments. If someone dips a clean knife in the peanutbutter jar or mayo or whatever, then spreads it on their bread and then dips it back into that jar, it is now contaminated. That may sound extreme...
  9. It depends on how much you trust yourself to be careful. I am a fanatic about washing my hands, but if your foundation is not gluten-free and you touch your face, then eat something without washing your hands first, you might get glutened. Also, if you don't use a gluten-free shampoo, eventually you will get a little bit up your nose and then of course you...
  10. The reason they named it "fear of the marketplace" is because until there WAS a marketplace most people were never in large crowds. The only "crowds" people were ever in was crowds of people they knew, and those crowds were pretty small by comparison. Also, they were "crowded" in places everyone was familiar with whereas the marketplace was a confusing maze...
  11. Addy, you will make a WONDERFUL dietician!! You have the experience and you have a great way of communicating with people. Just think of all the people you will be able to help! I (like so many on this board) am proud to know you!!
  12. With most people having access to the internet, I think it is a lot easier for people now. And of course, most often, goolgling anything about celiac will bring folks to this site. This has been the best education most of us could ever ask for. As a matter of fact, this site (IMO) should be required reading for all doctors and medical students.
  13. I didn't see a dietician but I did see a nutritionist. She admitted that I knew more about nutrition than she did. (I had done lots of research before seeing her.) She knew the basics of celiac disease but wasn't aware of how critical it was to avoid CC. (She gave me a supplement that contained wheat grass, claiming that there couldn't be gluten in it because...

  15. That article may be old, but I have read other articles that claim the same thing. I know that drug companies advertise to doctors and that is as it should be. But when they advertise to the average person watching some TV show, I believe it is only causing trouble. And wasn't there a law passed a few years ago banning drug companies from giving doctors...
  16. I think they recommend that you eat gluten for at least three months. Since you already feel crummy with the withdrawal symptoms, you might as well keep eating gluten until your appointment on the 23rd. In the meantime, read as much as you can here. There are plenty of threads where they tell you what blood tests to ask for. And the Newbie 101 thread will...
  17. What you are feeling right now is gluten withdrawal and yes, it is normal. I must tell you though, if you want to be tested you need to keep eating gluten until testing is completed. There are a bunch of different blood tests that you should have, plus the biopsy of the small intestine unless the blood tests are so definitive that your doctor feels comfortable...
  18. Tbolt, you and I were writing at about the same time so I was wondering if you missed my post from 2:46 PM. I linked to an interesting article. I'd be interested in your response.
  19. Love2travel, your mention of lavender made me think of a type of candy I had years and years ago - violet drops. I used to get them in the candy shop at Sturbridge Village in Mass. They were not a hard candy like lollipops are, but the texture of Necco wafers or SweetTarts. They were HEAVENLY and I have never tasted anything similar. Have you ever made...
  20. Didn't I just say that certain drugs have their place? I am not against all medications. You imply that advertising does no good when you say that people still text while driving. Yet if advertising does no good, why do companies spend millions of dollars on it every year? The thing is, most companies are not advertising things you need a doctor's prescription...
  21. Fosamax. Vioxx. Celebrex. Hormone replacement therapy. Shall I go on? Why should I take a drug with all of its potential side effects when diet will make me healthy, have NO side effects, and not cost me a thing? I'm not saying certain drugs don't have their place. Lord knows I would be dead by now if it hadn't been for the antibiotics they gave...
  22. You can also say something along the lines of, "I hate it that I can't eat all of this wonderful food but my doctor told me that even the slightest trace of gluten will make me sick. So I brought my own food because, after all, we are getting together to enjoy one another's company, and that's what's important."
  23. Cake doughnuts are fried, just like raised doughnuts. They just don't have yeast in them so they are denser. Think about those little packages of Hostess mini doughnuts you can get at convenience stores - they are usually powdered sugar-coated. Or the boxes of doughnuts you can buy in the grocery store. Those usually have plain, powdered sugar, and cinnamon...
  24. Sorry Prickly, I wasn't questioning YOU, I was just questioning what that doctor said. I'm no doctor either, but from what I learned with Kelly, certain things (like sugar) will feed cancer, but healthy foods feed the body and the immune system. I guess what I am getting at is this: if *I* had cancer, there is no way I would start eating gluten again in hopes...
