ARCHIVED May God Bless Our Firefighters!
bartfull replied to GottaSki's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Gemini, the problem is too many people have built their homes in deep forest and have not followed "fire safe" procedures. They don't clear away all of the trees from around their homes, they let pine needles build up in their gutters, the grass is too tall, and they insist on using conventional materials to build - wood and asphalt shingles. Granted... -
ARCHIVED May God Bless Our Firefighters!
bartfull replied to GottaSki's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I never realized until I moved West how much we depend on these heros to keep us safe. We have a Hotshot crew just to the north of us and I know some of them personally. I have to say (in a loving way) that these guys are NUTS! They put their lives on the line every day! You never know in a drought-stricken area such as this, when a fire will start and blow... -
My hair is really thin and really fine - like spider silk. When I was taking B12 and biotin it seemed like it was starting to grow in but my other intolerances kicked in and I haven't found any supplements I can take (yet). My hair is long and I wear it up. I stand upside down with the hair spray and push it around until it looks like I have hair. So...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Healed Some Of Their Intolerances?
bartfull replied to Maryw88's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I lost soy, corn, potatoes, and salicylates. So far I have gotten potatoes and other nightshades back, I got corn STARCH back (but not any other form of corn), can now eat salicylates if I go easy, and as for soy, I have no interest in even trying it. (It's really not good for me so why try? Not only does is mimic hormones, but almost all soy is now GMO.... -
ARCHIVED Against The Grain
bartfull posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A couple of weeks ago I bought an Against the Grain frozen pizza. It was SO good! Today I had some Against the Grain baguette. Again, totally delicious and TOTALLY grain-free. I know a lot of you have trouble with corn like I do. Their facility is grain-free. No corn, no soy, nothing that can harm us, unless you have trouble with dairy or eggs. They even... -
I heard on "The People's Pharmacy" on NPR this morning that 22 people die in this country EVERY DAY due to medical mistakes. TWENTY-TWO people EVERY DAY! And one of the reasons is that everyone in the medical profession from doctors to nurses to medical technicians have to take a VOW to never say ANYTHING negative about any doctor, even if they know he/she...

ARCHIVED Cross Contamination - The Bane Of My Life!
bartfull replied to Greebo115's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would think if the CC in the beans was enough to make you sick, the CC left in the scratches would be enough to make you sick. I admit I AM super careful to the point of justifiable paranoia, , but I wouldn't take a chance on it. -
ARCHIVED Good Gluten Free Meals Prepared Using A Microwave?
bartfull replied to gabechevarrieta's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Rice, baked potato, and veggies are easy in the micro. Meat is the problem. Yeah, you CAN do chicken but you have to make sure it's done and it does taste lousy unless you shred it and mix with sauces and spices. Hot dogs are good though. If you can find a decent health food store you will be able to find healthy hot dogs without all the nitrates and other... -
ARCHIVED Have You Been Told It Is All In Your Head?
bartfull replied to lovechild's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Tell your friend that your symptoms are no more psychosomatic than her rudeness is. Both are very real. -
ARCHIVED Cross Contamination - The Bane Of My Life!
bartfull replied to Greebo115's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A metal non-stick pot - that means it's some sort of Teflon, right? And you said it's scratched. That IS your source of CC. Gluten hides in those scratches and can't be cleaned out. Any scratched Teflon pans that have ever had gluten in them will CC you. Try cooking the chicken or whatever in a different pan and I bet you won't get sick. Either get some of... -
ARCHIVED Mental Health?
bartfull replied to LFitts's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
When my step-daughter was her age that's exactly the way she was - if she didn't win every game or prove to be the best at anything she tried she would cry or pout or refuse to play. It was a phase. She outgrew it and turned out to be a lovely human being. -
ARCHIVED Help? With Coffee?
bartfull replied to kitkatkid's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think the thing with Starbucks is that some of the "coffees" you can buy at their stores with all kinds of flavorings and other stuff might have some gluten in them. But just plain old coffee doesn't have gluten. I never gave up my 8 cups a day and it never bothered me at all, but you may have had more damage than I did. Cut back for a while. They SAY that... -
ARCHIVED 6 Weeks On A Gluten Free Diet And Other Foods Hurt Just As Bad
bartfull replied to mymalachy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm not exactly sure why it happens either but it happened to me. Some say it is because the celiac was masking all of the other intolerances. Some say it is because we are still healing and our systems are "fragile". I know that at first it seemed like everything bothered me. A nutritionist I saw told me to switch to all organic for a while and that helped... -
ARCHIVED Warning About Amy's Frozen Meals
bartfull replied to ChamomileTea's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That's why I read every ingredients label, every time. I even read the label on both packages when I am buying two of the same item. One might be an older package, and one might be newer. The newer package MIGHT have different ingredients because companies often change ingredients based on price and availability. Paranoid? You bet! But I don't get glutened... -
ARCHIVED Mayo Appt
bartfull replied to Sharonmarie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have known many people who went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Believe me, you are putting yourself in VERY good hands. Let us know how it turns out. -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Left Handedness
bartfull replied to poopedout's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Mom (who had celiac) was a lefty. I do some things right-handed and some things left-handed. For example, if I am playing softball or golfing, I am a lefty. I can shoot pool either way. I'm not sure if it's because I have left-handed tendencies or if it's because my Dad worked second shift when I learned to play ball - therefore my lefty Mom taught me. -
ARCHIVED Hives...milk Allergy Etc
bartfull replied to seraphim's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't know how reliable the information is, but when I looked up ph/allergies, some sites suggested that if your ph was high, you were more likely to have allergies. Other sites said that allergies can CAUSE high ph. Livestrong said that people were more likely to be allergic to acidic foods than low ph foods. It seems there MIGHT be some kind of connection... -
ARCHIVED New-Celiac-Diet-Training
bartfull replied to Seefyboy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
1. Is there any other methods of fixing my symptoms other than eating gluten free? You say you were surprised to find out you have celiac. Have you been diagnosed? If so, the answer to you question is ABSOLUTELY NOT. If you go gluten-free and stay gluten-free, making sure that you avoid cross contamination (see the newbie 101 thread), you may find that... -
ARCHIVED I'm An Idiot.......i Also Need To Speak Up!
bartfull replied to MissyBB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm with NotMe. I will not eat at anyone's house. Even if that woman hadn't cut the lemons on a gluteny cutting board, you never know if she had the pan the chicken was cooked in sitting on the counter when she poured a cup of flour into another dish she was making. Or maybe she used a wooden spoon to stir something. I don't expect my friends to learn... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge: Anyone Tried Just Flour And Water?
bartfull replied to BelleVie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think I heard that pasta has more gluten per ounce than anything else. -
ARCHIVED Unexpected Hospital Stay And Dietary Nightmare
bartfull replied to cahill's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wonder if they would bring a peanut allergic person a PBJ sandwich and tell them they had to eat it. Idiots! -
I wouldn't risk eating gluten if it meant a possibility that the DH would come back. If eating gluten-free cleared up your rash, what difference does it make? No matter if it was true DH or something else, it cleared up, right? And you said you had headaches and fatigue that cleared up too. So, maybe it's NCGI, but either way, you know gluten gives you problems...

ARCHIVED First Day Of Summer ... And It Won't Stop Raining - Vent
bartfull replied to nvsmom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Shadow, we usually have about the same weather as you do, but this year we have gotten lots of rain. Everything is so green. What I worry about is when the rain stops and our typical summer drought comes back. All that underbrush will make fuel for the fires we usually get in August. NVS, I have been watching in the news and on youtube. Flooded rivers... -
This is the best place I have found for my corn sensitivity. There is even a list of ingredients that potentially contain corn, plus items that are usually "processed" with corn. Good luch with it. Corn is SO hard to avoid! Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Question On Corn Aversion
bartfull replied to SBlack's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can't eat anything with any form of corn. The reason I got corn starch back for a while is that most of the protein is pricessed out of it, but all of those other things are pure poison to me. I lost potatoes for a long time but have recently gotten them back. I think it is a salicylate sensitivity for me. Or it could be a sensitivity to nightshades. They...
