I went to the free clinic and explained my problem to the doctor there. (I couldn't see paying for a $100 plus office visit just so I could get a prescription.) Not only did he write me a 'script, but I found the only doctor I would ever trust by doing so. He spent over an hour with me, and I found out he does that with every patient! He's the one who accepted...

ARCHIVED Food Intolerances - This Is All So Confusing!
bartfull replied to lovechild's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I see you don't have any vegetables on your list. Try organic sweet potatoes. They are full of nutrition. By "gentle" foods, I mean things that aren't too greasy or don't have TOO much fiber. Nuts for example - they are good for you but hard to digest. But more importantly, I see you are eating oats. There is the red flag. Oats are VERY often cross-contaminated... -
ARCHIVED Disney Thinks Bullying A Gluten-Free Kid Is Funny
bartfull replied to carisima's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wasn't laughing at the video because I thought it was funny. (It wasn't.) I was just laughing because it sounded like the kid was quoting me. By the way, when I reacted that way at the picnic, the people around me laughed, but they were laughing WITH me. They all know about my gluten problem. As a matter of fact, these were some of the same people who... -
ARCHIVED Disney Thinks Bullying A Gluten-Free Kid Is Funny

You know what IS funny? The other day I was at a graduation picnic and someone threw a dinner roll at a guy standing next to me. He missed, and it hit my leg. My response? "EWW! GLUTEN!!!" Then I watch this video clip and see the same thing happen to the kid, and with the same response. I know this show was on before this ever happened, otherwise I'd... -
ARCHIVED The New Celiac Drug Is Out There
bartfull replied to gatita's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll pass. Why should I take a drug that will cost me money, force me to see a doctor, probably give me side effects, and may even cause real harm (anybody remember the hormone replacement therapy all the doctors wanted us on?), when I can stick to a gluten-free diet for free and with no harmful effects? -
ARCHIVED Can Cat Food Cause Glutening?
bartfull replied to alesusy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I HAVEN'T taken my cat gluten-free, simply because I can't get gluten-free cat food here. (They have gluten-free DOG food, but nothing for cats!) I just turn my head when I pour the dried food into her dish, and I scrub my hands EVERY time I put anything in my mouth. She never gets into my lap. She just isn't a lap cat, I guess. She would much rather stay... -

ARCHIVED Homemade Donut Recipes And Tips
bartfull replied to megsybeth's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm confused. Old Fashoined donuts ARE cake style. Crullers can be either. Although I've never had a Krispy Kreme, the one's CommonTater are talking about are glazed, and those are usually raised donuts. Personally, I liked either kind back in the day, but my favorite way to eat them was plain. I liked plain cake donuts, and a couple of different times... -

ARCHIVED Urologist Wants To See Me About Kidney. Worried....

Your GI should be shot! Why do they think it isn't important to communicate with us? It is OUR bodies! They don't even consider that we are living thinking human beings! We are just "parts" to them. GRRR... I hope it turns out to be nothing serious. Maybe your GI hasn't fulfilled his "quota" of referrals this month. I swear, they are all in on a money... -
ARCHIVED Is This Possibly Dermatitis Herpetiformis?
bartfull replied to djs89's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Look up gutate psoriasis. As a matter of fact, if you google "gutate lesions" you will see images that look very much like the pics you posted. That's not to say that's what it is, but it might be. Gutate psoriasis itches too, but not as badly as DH. It sounds like you do have a problem with gluten. You may or may not have celiac, but there is a thing... -
ARCHIVED Food Intolerances - This Is All So Confusing!
bartfull replied to lovechild's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have multiple food intolerances, but honestly, at this point in your journey you are likely to have gluten-feeling reactions to just about anything. You aren't healed yet and your body is confused. When I first started I would get D from sweet potatoes! I would suggest that you eat ONLY foods that you have prepared yourself for a while. Don't take a... -
ARCHIVED Mushroom (Neroli) Memorial Thread
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Karen, I apologize for leaving you out of my last post where I mentioned the people who first gave me help, compassion, and great advice. You were one of those people, along with Irish, Skylark, and of course Mushroom. Now, I have to say this - I once had a cat who was so different from every other cat I ever had. Her name was Don't Jump, and she was... -
ARCHIVED Mushroom (Neroli) Memorial Thread
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Oh my. I'm shocked and heartbroken. When I first came here it was Mushroom, Irish, and Skylark who reached out to me with their knowledge and their compassion. I haven't seen Skylark here in a long time either and I'm almost afraid to ask... Mushroom, I know you have a special place in Heaven. People as kind and giving as you are so rare in this world... -

Thanks, Colleen. I think I'll take your advice. A nice long soak in a warm tub. I have some candles and my beverage of choice is water, but I'll enjoy it. Debit cards should never be used online though. With a credit card, you have protection should some hacker get your number. With a debit card, they can drain your bank account before you are even aware... -

Raven, I would NEVER hurt my beautiful cat! What I meant was, I am so accident prone and having such a bad luck day that I am dangerous to be around. If I whacked my beautiful $5,000 guitar and put a dent in it after whacking my toe on the radiator and tripping over a chair, I'm just afraid I'll step on her or drop something on her or fall on her or something... -
ARCHIVED A List Of gluten-free Restaurants - Unconfirmed/confirmed.
bartfull replied to Snag's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Lintz Brother's Pizza in Hermosa South Dakota has a gluten-free pizza. They have family members with celiac so they know how to make it without CC. It is actually made in a different room (with a closed door) from their regular pizza. I haven't eaten there yet but a lot of my gluten-free friends eat there and none of them has ever had a problem. I know...- 34 replies

ARCHIVED I Want To Move Back

Gemini, I'm pushing 60 and have never had a credit card in my life. I tried to get one and was told I "don't exist". They said bad credit is better than no credit. I was advised to try to get a JCPenny card and slowly try to build credit, but it'll take a long time, even if THEY would give me a card. The thing about the weather - the southern Black Hills... -

Adelaide, that sounds great. The question I have is, what is the job market like? What about music stores? I'd like to continue in this business if I could. Do you have any idea of the cost of renting a commercial building? (My shop is small - about 25X50) Or maybe even the cost of buying one if there is an apartment upstairs? How about home prices/rental... -

Karen, I know they get ice cream deliveries on Monday's and Thursdays. They only order four of these, and by the time I close the shop and get ther (after 6PM) it is usually gone. Me and my big mouth! I told a lot of friends how good this stuff is and they told THEIR frinds, and now everybody loves it. You would think the manager would realize that if it... -

The only rice that works for me is Uncle Ben's instant white rice. One of our two grocery stores stopped carrying it last year. I asked them to get it again but they refuse to do ANYTHING a customer asks. For example, they carry Blue Bunny All Natural vanilla ice cream, but it sells out quickly. I asked them to order extra and put some aside with my name... -
Reminds me of years (and years!) ago when I went on opening night to see a Star Trek movie. We got out of the car and there was a guy with a megaphone standing out front saying, "Star Trek Three is all sold out!" My buddy Glenn and I both said, in unison, "Doo-dah, Doo-dah". I guess you would have had to be there, but the way the guy said it, it really...

ARCHIVED Abbvie, Partner Team Up On Drug To Treat Celiac Disease - Chicago Tribune
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
This is good news! Not that I would ever take a drug just so I could eat gluten. But if they come out with a drug, doctors will have an incentive ($$$$) to take celiac seriously, learn about it, and test for it! -
I must have missed the posts you are talking about, but if I said something to offend you, I apologize. I like to keep in mind that when I have been glutened (or corned), I get incredibly grumpy. If someone here is having a grumpy day, I just figure it must be something they ate.
