  1. I didn't mean food poisoning, I meant a stomach virus or the like. I thought one time that I had been glutened but I couldn't figure out how. When some of my close friends started getting sick I realized my "glutening" was actually just plain old stomach "flu".
  2. Could it possibly be that you both got sick with "the bug" at the same time?
  3. A stab in the dark: you may have developed an intolerance to nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant). I say this because most folks here who are intolerant to them present with joint pain.
  4. Soy could definitely be a problem. It is for many of us. Shadow is right - skip the processed foods for a while and eat just whole foods - meat, veggies, fruit, and maybe some nuts. A good diet plan would be something like this: Breakfast - eggs with melted cheese, a slice of ham, and if you need some carbs, plain white rice. (I like to melt the cheese...
  5. Udi's makes a frozen gluten-free pizza crust too. Philly'sMom, why don't you list his six foods for us so we can help you find substitutes for all of them? I'm sure you have him on a multi-vitamin, but if not, he will need one. And you need to check to make sure that, and all other medications he might take are gluten-free. For the pizza, maybe...
  6. Which brands? Kinnikinick makes a white bread that folks here seem to like. I think it is more like the packaged white bread in stores. I prefer Udi's multi-grain because it is more like a crusty french bread.
  7. Check out the "Newbie 101" thread. You will need to learn about cross-contamination. He will need his own toaster if you choose to get him gluten-free bread. (Udi's Whole Grain, Canyon Bakehouse San Juan 7-Grain, or Rudy's are the best. Kinnickinnick is good too. Don't bother trying Ener-G bread. Just about everyone here argrees that it is not even edible...
  8. I LOVE key lime pie but unfortunately, here in the midwest we can't get key limes. Regular limes just won't do it.
  9. I've got it. It's on my feet too. When I went gluten-free it started to clear up. Now I get it back if I eat corn or foods high in salicylates (almonds, most fruits, all berries, and some vegetables). If I am really careful with my diet it goes away completely. Right now my hands are completely healed but I still have some on my feet from the last time I...
  10. I am ashamed to say that even I thought my Mom was a hypochondriac. She suffered from huge variety of symptoms all her life. EVERYONE thought she MUST be making it up. Turns out she had celiac, and once she went gluten-free, those symptoms went away.
  11. Fire your GP. NOW. Any "doctor" who wants to push pills on you instead of getting to the root of the problem should be stripped of their license to practise IMO. Anxiety is one of the many symptoms of celiac. When you go to the gastro, tell him you want the FULL celiac panel, and that you want to make sure he takes at least six to eight samples during...
  12. When I was a kid, I always loved sniffing the coffee can right after Mom opened it. Then I'd ask her for a sip of her coffee and I HATED it! She put cream and sugar in it. I was 18 years old when I happened to be REALLY tired while at someone's house. They offered me coffee and even though I didn't like coffee, I had some. They didn't have any cream or sugar...
  13. Lsher102, Your post kind of got lost in this thread. You should start a new thread and introduce yourself. Tell us how long you've been gluten-free. It could be that you are still healing. A lot of us go through that "honeymoon period" where we start to feel great, only to have setbacks later. Some of us develop other intolerances. Some of us just take a...
  14. Yeah, unless it is CERTIFIED gluten-free, I tend to DIStrust it. There are a lot of companies trying to jump on the gluten-free bandwagon and labelling things gluten-free even when they are most likely cross-contaminated. (Think Domino's Pizza.) So I read the ingredients on every package, every time. I know that I can trust certain brands (like Kraft) to...
  15. A sandwich shop? I would just bring my own or eat beforehand. A pizza place? I wouldn't go. Too much flour dust in the air. After a time or two, if these friends are true friends, they will ask YOU to pick the restaurant.
  16. It might just be a coincedence. You may have developed asthma AS WELL as celiac. Asthma has become much more prevalent too. Part of it is likely because our air isn't as clean as it once was, part of it is probably because our "food" is so full of chemicals, part of it is most likely because with climate change, there seems to be much more dust and/or mold...
  17. (You know, I never believed in cholestorol. I mean, I know there IS such a thing, but I never believed it did what they said it did as far as heart disease. They are now finding out that it doesn't. Studies have shown that people with LOW cholestorol are just as likely to have a heart attack as those with high. They now think that it is INFLAMMATION that...
  18. I would call city hall and tell them what you just told us. Get the names of the people you spoke to about not allowing food, and find out who fed her the cookies. Tell the people at city hall that you are considering speaking to a lawyer. (Even if that is the farthest thing from your mind, it will get their attention. That way they will NEVER let it happen...
  19. Mine is doctors. I have seen too many family members killed by either wrong diagnoses, wrong medications, or too many conflicting medications and their side effects. I also don't like hospitals. Not only are they full of doctoers, but a lot of the nurses and aides are incompetent. Last time I was at a hospital was with my friend Kelly who died of cancer...
  20. If you stay in motels or even go to movie theaters, there is a chance you can bring them home. If you buy anything "soft", such as clothing or bedding at yard sales, you could bring them home. More paranoia on my part? Well, maybe. But this is what I have learned on the internet. I never go anywhere so I haven't stayed in a motel in years. I don't go...
  21. I not only read the label every time, but if I'm buying more than one, I read the label on them both. You never know when you're getting one from the old batch that was safe and one from the new batch with different ingredients. Don't laugh! It has happened to me! I bought two pints of ice cream once, and even though they were identical in both brand...
  22. I never got tested. (No insurance.) But even my doctor agrees that because the gluten-free diet cleared up my symptoms, and the fact that my mother WAS diagnosed by biopsy, I have celiac. It doesn't matter to me that I have no "formal" diagnosis. All that matters is that if I stay gluten-free, I feel better. If anyone asks, I say something along the lines...
  23. I used to get them often and painfully. Hard to get rid of and they would keep coming back. I would get them, take some lemon and finally get rid of them only to have them come back a couple of hours later. This would go on for a week or two. Then I would have a couple of weeks respite. Since going gluten-free I have seldom gotten them at all. I don't...
  24. CHECK YOUR MEDS! Almost ALL pills are full of corn starch.
