  1. If I'm not mistaken, eggs can cause DH flares. And salt of course. Iodine is the culprit.
  2. Corn never gave me digestive symptoms. As a matter of fact, gluten didn't give me bad digestive symptoms either, although it does now. What they both gave me was psoriasis. I still get psoriasis from corn meal, but corn starch doesn't bother me anymore. That has opened up a whole realm of foods that I can now eat. I can eat Udi's bread, but not Canyon Bakehouse...
  3. Here's a different take on this: WE complain about all of the fad dieters who make it harder for folks to take us seriously. This article states that 18% of people are now buying gluten-free products. Only about 1% of people are estimated to have celiac. Admittedly, no one knows how many of us are NCGI, but it's probably nowhere near 17%. Say it's about the...
  4. It could well be from gluten, or it could be from the drink you had. A lot of us can't handle alcohol at all anymore, and just one drink can give us those results.
  5. Frumpy, if you could stick with him while he was drinking you must have thought your marriage was worth it. And now that he has stopped drinking and has shown a committment to stopping, things will get better. AND, celiac disease probably has contributed to any "personality traits" that may have been making things hard. If you've read much here you probably...
  6. Oh, how well I understand! I think I said almost the exact same words about not being much of a cook, and taking something out of the freezer to zap in the microwave. Even the part about eating out all the time. You are not alone! After I had been gluten-free for a few weeks I started develpoing other intolerances too. I was down to 11 safe foods for...
  7. Yeah, I was a waitress for years too. What I found was that the cooks didn't CARE, rather than didn't understand. I would tell them I had a customer with an allergy and to make sure they didn't put X on her plate. I'd get there to pick up my order and sure enough, there was X, sitting there right next to the rest of her meal. I'd remind them and they would...
  8. Happy, I have to ask, where (what state) that restaurant is in. If it's near me you will be seeing me soon! There was a restaurant in Connecticut that Mom could eat at because the owner had family members with celiac and she knew how to do it right. And there is a pizza place about 45 miles from here that has gluten-free pizza and they too have family...
  9. To me the biggest problem with the fad is that every company and its brother wants to get on the bandwagon. They are labeling things as gluten-free that are so cross-contaminated that any true celiac can't eat them. Dominoes Pizza is a good example of this - it is made in the same room and in the same pans as their gluteny pizza. It's OK if you read here...
  10. Baking soda. After a while it actually tastes...refreshing.
  11. If I were diagnosed with a fatal disease and told I had a week to live, I would fly to New Orleans and pig out on anything I wanted. But until that happens, I will stay home and pig out on as many gluten-free options as I can find and enjoy every bite.
  12. About 20 years ago I went to a "doctor" for a complete physical. At that time he said the only things abnormal on my blood tests were that my iron level was really high and that my cholesterol was the lowest he'd ever seen. He didn't seem too concerned about either, but then again, he wasn't much of a doctor. I haven't had it tested since. No insurance...
  13. Love you too, Gemini. But I still would never wash my cloth napkins in gluten. They touch my lips, then I eat something with those same lips. And dishtowels washed in gluten would spread that gluten onto my dishes. I know allergies are different from intolerances, but if there is enough soap left in out laundry for us to smell the scent of the detergent...
  14. Gemini, some of us use cloth napkins. No matter how good our washing machines are, they will never rinse ALL of the detergent out. If they did, those who have skin allergies wouldn't have to worry about what detergent they use - but they do. So if someone uses Wisk for example, (which I believe contains gluten) then wipes their mouth with a cloth napkin they...
  15. Back when I was reacting to white potatoes I ate rice crackers or cashews for my "crunchy salty snacks". Chex cereals are gluten-free, but because they make the rice chex on shared equipment with the corn chex, I could never eat them. I didn't worry about it because I was never a big cereal eater anyway. You can eat rice cakes, and I suppose if you wanted...
  16. If I'm not mistaken, both soy and dairy can also cause atrophy. (Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.) If you are sure you aren't getting cross-contaminated, maybe these things are causing your problem? I would also go through the house with a fine-toothed comb, looking for possible sources of CC. Are you in a gluten-free household, or do other family members...
  17. For most of my childhood and well into adulthood, I thought my Mom was a hypochondriac. She too thought she had whatever someone she knew was diagnosed with. Every day it seemed she had a different complaint. Headache one day, backache the next. Sick stomach the following day, dizzy the next. I STILL haven't forgiven myself for thinking she was making...
  18. I try to think of eating as a necessary bodily function. I try not to think of it as something pleasurable or non-pleasurable. Just necessary, like breathing or going to the bathroom. I get it out of the way and get on with the rest of my day. That being said, I can NOW eat things I enjoy. For the first year it was just 11 foods (including butter and salt...
  19. You do realize that even the slightest bit of cross-contamination can cause damage? There are some of us who don't even get digestive symptoms, but if we eat something that was stirred with the wrong spoon, or something that was made in the same room where someone just made a cake (where the flour dust will remain in the air for hours), we will have damage...
  20. That's true. Of course bakery muffins are about twice the size, but usually those are TOO big. I could never finish a whole one.
  21. Thanks! I'll throw the "pan" away, or maybe clean it and use it to store small guitar parts. At 300 calories a piece, I am going to try not to indulge too often, but I can tell you that the next one I have will be heated and topped with vanilla ice cream.
  22. So I bought these Udi's chocolate muffins so I could take them to a party where another celiac will be present. I know everyone here has said how good they are so I didn't REALLY have to try one before taking them, but they've been calling my name. I popped one in the micro for a few seconds and now I am in HEAVEN! They really DO taste better than just about...
  23. I'm not much of a cook so I would end up bringing something store-bought. As a matter of fact, that is exactly what I'll be doing Saturday night. I've been invited to a surprise birthday party for a friend and I know there will be at least one other celiac there. I may buy some of those Udi's chocolate muffins and the rest of them can be jealous because I...
  24. I DO have trouble with soy, but my reactions are usually skin related. The tuna made me sick to my stomach. But that could have been psychosomatic. Maybe I was still thinking about the dolphins. But getting back to you - maybe it WAS the canola oil. Not that it has gluten or anything, but until you heal completely, just about anything might set you off...
  25. What brand of tuna was it? Did you read the label? From what I have read, some tuna has vegetable broth in it and that broth contains soy. I used to love tuna as a school kid. I ate it every day. When I found out that there were dolphins caught in the nets and processed right along with the tuna, I gave it up. Years later when they started having "dolphin...
