ARCHIVED Please Help
bartfull replied to jessimarie3's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If the tea is in a teabag, that might be the problem. Many teabags have corn starch in them. -
ARCHIVED Another Food Off Limits
bartfull replied to FruitEnthusiast's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If I'm not mistaken, coconut is very high in sals. -
Because psoriasis is my most notable symptom I have been to many psoriasis forums. I have told my story and they reject the very idea that gluten-free can help! There are many scolarly articles about the connection from some very reputable doctors, hospitals and other organizations, but they STILL reject the idea. I'll see things like, "I tried a gluten-free...

ARCHIVED Anyone With Iga Deficiency Crave Eggs With Runny Yolks?
bartfull replied to maggiesimpson's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
With no insurance, I've never been tested. But all my life I have craved runny yolks. When I was a kid, soft-boiled eggs was the ONLY thing they could get me to eat. I was born sick - RH neg. to an RH pos. mother, and this was long before they had shots for it. I was jaundiced, and I also had pneumonia several times during my infancy. I always knew I must... -
ARCHIVED Is Celiac The Answer?
bartfull replied to ValyntineM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wow. You sound like a CLASSIC celiac! I'm not a doctor, but I would bet a lot of money that that is what you have. My symptoms were much milder than what you describe, but I can tell you that after 14 months, my psoriasis is gone. TOTALLY gone. And it was the psoriasis that led me here. My poor sweet mother had psoriasis for years, and when she was diagnosed... -
I'm so sorry to hear you are sick! I have no advice, but I can offer you a (((HUG))) and my best wishes for a speedy recovery. In the meantime, here is a little song that always cheers me up. There are no giraffes involved, but maybe it'll cheer you up too.

ARCHIVED I Need Good Bread!
bartfull replied to roxieb73's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I guess I'm not like a lot of people. I never liked the "Wonderbread" types of bread. I used to buy French bread or Italian bread because I like a crusty bread with texture. That's why I love Udi's multi-grain bread. But if you like that soft stuff, try Kinikinik (sp). Everyone says that is more like traditional store-bought bread. I have had their hamburger... -
ARCHIVED What Did You Have For Lunch Today?
bartfull replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I never used to even read this thread because I'm a lousy cook and my lunch was pretty much the same every day. But today I had a SANDWICH! Now that I can tolerate Udi's again, my lunches will be some type of sandwich. Today it was roasted chicken with melted Monterray jack. YUM! -
ARCHIVED Yes, Things Do Get Better!
bartfull replied to FruitEnthusiast's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sara, that is great to hear. We have all been or are going through something that will, in the long run, make us stronger people. We have learned to cherish the good days, and we have learned patience to get us through the bad ones. But most of all, I think this disease teaches us about hope. And hope is one of the most beautiful words in the English... -
ARCHIVED Dunkin Donuts
bartfull replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I noticed that the Dunks I used to get at their shops tastes different from the Dunks I make at home. It ALMOST tastes to me like there is a little bit of sugar doughnut taste in the stuff from the actual doughnut shops. I know that a lot of Dunks shops get their doughnuts off a truck and don't make them at the shops themselves, but I would still think the... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Nightmares- Literally!
bartfull replied to Pauliewog's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I haven't dreamed of eating gluten, but I have dreamed that my hands were INFESTED with the psoriasis that is my main symptom. I had one of those last week. I think it's because I have recently added corn starch back to my diet, and in my dream I must have been thinking it's too good to be true. When I woke up I could have rolled over and slept some... -
ARCHIVED Strange But Good
bartfull replied to Razzle Dazzle Brazell's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Same thing happens to me when I eat a banana. I'm not sure if it's a sugar rush or the potasium, but it's probably the sugar because it happens so fast. It doesn't happen when I eat ice cream (although the taste gives me a "happy rush"). Maybe it's the type of sugar. But whatever it is, it's great isn't it? -
Bossley, I just posted to you on the "soup" thread, and I don't want to be a party pooper, but I really think if I were you, I wouldn't even consider eating in a restaurant at this point. You need to simple down your menu. Whole foods only for a while. When you're still new at this your body is going to react to all sorts of things, and the chances of CC...

Bossley, it would be best for you to just eat plain meats that you buy at the meat counter, cooked without any spices either in the oven or a crockpot. Buy your veggies in the produce department, cut them up yourself, wash the heck out of them, then steam or microwave them. Organic is best, but if you don't have the money or a good source nearby, wash wash...

I'd be willing to bet that those who have had good experience got a server who either has celiac or knows someone who does. My Mom used to eat at a local restaurant where the manager's aunt had it, so she knew what to do. It was the ONLY place Mom knew she could eat safely, and it also just happened to be the best reataurant in the area. They're still open...

I haven't contributed to this thread yet, partially because my taste in books is so eclectic you will all think I'm strange. (But then again, I've been here long enough for you to KNOW that already!) My very favorite author in the world is Jane Austen. I have read all six of her books and the fragments dozens of times. As a matter of fact, when 9/11 happened...

ARCHIVED Anyone Ever Get Nightshades Back?
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I never even thought about the potato starch in Udi's. Now I'm REALLY excited. I'm going to wait a while, and maybe next month I'll buy a potato and see what happens. The only drawback is, if I can eat Udi's and potatoes both, I know I'm going to gain back some of that 40+ pounds that I lost. ESPECIALLY if I can eat potato chips again! Kettle Brand... -
ARCHIVED Shouldn't I Be Better By Now?
bartfull replied to Cait701's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When I first went gluten-free, by about three weeks I started feeling fantastic. Then it all went downhill. I think that's fairly common from what I have read here. It took over a year before I really started feeling good again. I know a year sounds like a long time, but it will go by quicker than you can imagine. What happened with me and quite a few... -
Oh Hon, you still have a life. You are just going through one of the rough patches in that life right now. I'm not an expert on DH, but from what I've read here it can take a couple of years of being gluten-free for all of the antibidies to leave your system. And going low iodine seems to help many if not most. Read as much as you can in the DH section, check...

Now that I have found out I can eat corn starch again I'm itching to get some of the other foods back that I have lost. I know the reason I got corn back is because I have finally healed enough that my body isn't mistaking corn for gluten. Nightshades are different though. They never gave me even the slightest digestive symptoms, just psoriasis and insomnia...

ARCHIVED Going Out For Drinks - Help
bartfull replied to Minstinguette's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Tequila should be OK. But be aware that your tolerance to alcohol may have changed. A lot of us can't drink at all because we either get sick or get very very drunk on tiny amounts of alcohol. Be careful! -
ARCHIVED Food Intolerance, Topicals Aswell?
bartfull replied to arian's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The trouble with topicals is when you get them on your hands (lotions for example), you might just forget and pop something in your mouth. Depending on your sensitivity, even lotion that has completely dried could make you sick. Shampoo and conditioner MIGHT get in your mouth or up your nose when you are using them. Make-up is the same as the lotion. If you... -
ARCHIVED 10-Year-Old Son Newly Diagnosed. Have Some Questions.
bartfull replied to Chrissy W.'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
What kinds of food sensitivity tests did he have? Some of these tests are unreliable. Also be aware that even though Dominoes claims their pizza is gluten-free, it is not. They make it in the same area, with the same utensils, and probably in the same pans as their regular pizza so it is cross contaminated and NOT safe for celiacs. There is a... -
ARCHIVED Does This Really Get Better?
bartfull replied to FruitEnthusiast's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Organic really helped me a lot. Every time I'd buy a sweet potato at the grocery store I'd get D within hours of eating it. Organic ones stayed with me. My system was so messed up I was reacting to pesticide residue, even though I washed the heck out of them and peeled them. Those pesticides and chemical fertilizers become part of the plant. The same thing...
